We can play a 4-4-2 hypothetically. Calhanoglu can play on the left side, but our wide men wouldn't necessarily be the typical pace-driven wingers. They'd sort of be an extension of our midfield. Our fullbacks being both very capable in attacking play could overlap as well. It would be a solid formation IMO with potential to be very effective in 1) holding possession and 2) being very defensively sound. It would definitely not be the fastest/most attack driven formation though. We'd have 4 players full of creativity with two fast & very good strikers in front of them.

We might get a good indication of Montella's intended formation tomorrow against Lugano.
I'm super excited by Aubameyang news, this season will be incredibly exciting to watch knowing he's playing. Cannot wait to see Calhanoglu lob a ball and watch him burn players like they're at walking pace Big Grin
In all honesty, if you have a play style that sends a lot of balls in over the defense him and Ronaldo are probably the two best players in the world to have playing up front. He's unstoppable in a footrace

Spot on!!! We've actually got a well balanced squad at the moment. I'd rather see us sort out some depth and leave the big names to next summer Mercato(or if the right player-Modric- becomes available then January)...

Using the cheats as an example... they built their depth first and then stepped up the team with big names. By then, they already had a solid squad with a coach that had them playing well... If we can achieve that this season and get into the champions league, then we can worry about bringing in players to step up the squad.

I love what F&M have done so far. With Biglia done(assuming it'll be done soon) we still need a CM and a second striker or a starter LW and backup RW depending on formation...
I think we're likely to wait for those final signings, first to see what money we can bring in by selling off our dead wood and second to see who becomes available as the marcato plays out... eg. Keita had no interest in coming because he wanted the cheats. After they've signed D. Costa and Berna they won't need him. Add to that the signings we've made(he can clearly see where building something special) he might end up changing his mind a deciding we're the best option for him... (used him as an example only because it's someone we where looking at.

Either way, I trust F&M know what they're doing. Best thing that's happened to the club i not the buy out. It's the appointment of those two! Would still love to see Maldini involved in the club in some way though... I suppose I'll keep dreaming
Boban is super negative, never says anything good about any player or club.

To refute his comment, Juventus had barely if any big names at all when they were rebuilding and to be honest the only 'big name' they ever bought was Higuain, otherwise they made all their big names. Dybala was just a talented kid similar to Andre Silva, Pogba was a free pick up who nobody thought anything of, Vidal was talented and bought on the cheap - became a super star because his strengths fit Juve's system. Buffon was a legend, lucky them that he continued playing for this many years. Barzagli was a free pick up IIRC from Palermo, good experienced CB but again his success is in no small part due to the chemistry in their back-line.

Realistically, big names might be a waste of money at this point.. When they come places they want to win titles, I'm not ruling out winning the scudetto, Coppa italia or Europa league, but if we're talking Modric level signings, then I think it's best we splash that kind of cash when we're ready to dominate for titles. Again comparing to Juve, only because their project (albeit in a lengthier manor was somewhat similar), they only bought a couple superstars once they felt they were ready to challenge for CL title - and they did make it to the finals. The first steps are to buy talented players that have potential to be the best as we are doing, implement a tactically sound project & within a year or two I guarantee Andre Silva, Rodriguez, Conti & co will all be 'big names'. When Barcelona wasn't at their best, Xavi was still one of their players, some probably don't even remember. He was always a good player, it was only until Barcelona put together a strong project that worked, that's when he was known for being one of the best midfielders in the world, yet, he was always the same player.

One or two mature superstars would be good, only because we have some young super-talents at the moment that could use some guidance & it would speed things up. Again though, it's not 100% necessary as long as we buy the right players.

When you build a team that works with talented players, most of the time if it succeeds the players will be superstars along with the clubs success.. Bottom line IMO.
yes that barca team come to my mind as well when reading your post wcmilan, when we look the barca nowadays we dont see a single bloodline from the old barca when ronaldinho is there, even ronaldinho when bought by barca was still a huge talent from psg, not a superstar signing. they make their own star at that time. and now when they had all the money and fame they can just buy superstar into their team, but imo even neymar is just a talent from brazil at the time they bought him. so the real answer is, we need to create our own superstars, and from what i see this last month with the mercato, i like it so far, silva, hakan, conti, rr will be a huge hit for us in the future, only kessie that i had doubt being a superstar, dont get me wrong, he is a good player, and will be a very good player for us, but he wont be a superstar name like kaka or sheva have been.
Not that I don't agree with the sentiment that we need to focus on building depth and balance this mercato, but I do think a statement signing is important as well. The reality is, transfers like the ones we have done are critical in the team's success, but they do not elicit fan fare and generate excitement for the team. Sure, the die hard Milan fans would follow these moves and analyze how everything fits, but vast majority of the soccer world would look at the names and go "Meh, those guys aren't Messi or Ronaldo, so who cares?"

The amount of resources we are pouring into this mercato is almost unprecedented in soccer. When it's all said and done, we very well could spend close to 200M in one mercato. Other than Real's summer of Benzema, CR7 and Kaka, I almost can't think of another example of this kind of expenditures. For this management to pump so much resources into this mercato and then have everyone talk sh*t about them like they haven't done anything is quite unfair. That's why I think it is imperative for us to have that one big name, big ticket signing. This management is trying to bring prestige back to the team, that's why they poured all this cash in to begin with. And they need to get a huge name to accomplish that goal. The other thing is, if we are trying to increase our marketability, we also need the big iconic players. We are very very far behind in terms of marketing and branding, and we need to get that issue fixed quickly. If spending 70M on a big name player helps us accomplish that goal, that's really a small price to pay.
I don't necessarily agree with the way Boban commented on the mercato so far, but he's not totally wrong either. We haven't bought the very best players and there are doubts. Musacchio's not a top defender and has had issues with injuries. Conti has one great year behind him, RR saw a drop in form last season, Kessie is still a prospect rather than a guarantee, Silva has just broken through at the top level, Calhanoglu isn't yet proven of the highest level and hasn't played in 4 months. Then of course there's Borini...

The point is, these guys are very good players and prospects and it's important to see the club building towards the future. However, at this point we're a team aiming for top 4 (and that's becoming more achievable as others weaken), not the title, so while it's important to have optimism it's not going to result in immediate success as things stand.

I'm aware this might seem like a negative viewpoint, but it really isn't, it's just realistic. Boban comes off overly negative with his assessment of the mercato thus far because he focuses on the fact the players brought in don't give guarantees. Likewise, I do think many fans are hyping up the mercato and are setting unlikely expectations on the team with expectations rising, with some even suggesting the team will be in a position to challenge for the scudetto.

I think realistically we're somewhere in the middle. We should be aiming for a top 4 spot this season and a good run at the least in EL. I said it in the Calhanoglu thread, but imo what's really positive about the mercato is that while individually the players brought in don't suddenly raise the level of the team to new heights like a world class player might, as a collective we should see significant improvement this season in the quality of the team compared to recent years.

Also, I came across a reasonable read on FI on why Milan needs to get Aubameyang:

Belotti is a big name or not if we get him 70 mil euros? Or still star in the making just like our other transfers?
Truth be told, I'm not 100% sold on Belotti at this moment. Sure he had a good season and he's young enough to improve, not to mention that he's a Milan fan.... but that doesn't mean he'll be able to replicate that same form this coming season, or that he'll 100% fit into our team or the system that we use. Sheva was at the peak of his powers when he left us for Chelski, and we all know just how bad that went. He simply couldn't create or convert the chances needed to score to save his life. Back then with Milan creating 30-40 chances (Ala Kaka, Seedorf, Pirlo), he had a higher number of chances to convert, whereas in Chelsea, their midfield back then was less dynamic and just didn't create enough for him to do his job.
And whilst Belotti may yet prove me wrong, I still have my doubts about whether he can:

a.) maintain his form from last season, or at least stay consistently competitive, and
b.) fit into whatever the system Montella decides to use.

Belotti is not a pace-horse like Auba, nor is he a control tower like Ibra, nor a Tank like Lukaku, so what exactly is that thing that he will bring to our team?
I personally am not sold on Belotti to be in the class of someone like Auba either. I like him as a player, and think he has a lot of potential given that he is still so young. But he hasn't proven himself at the highest level long enough for me to invest 70M in him. For that kind of cash, you need someone who is almost a guaranteed success, not someone who is still a risk. Don't get me wrong, I would love to sign him, just not over someone Auba's level.
We miss out on James; he's going to Munich as Douglass Costa's replacement.
