It's going to be an incredible weekend for Serie A. So many possible changes in dynamics at the top of the league could occur.

Obviously I want both Rome clubs to lose and us to win the derby. Hoping Atalanta beat Sampdoria or get a draw.
Pallotta's got a big mouth, but he does come up with some interesting ideas:

Working in IT in a technical role, the idea definitely has my interest. I'm not sure of the feasibility of what he's proposing, but given there are technologies out there to capture player data during the course of match such as what Opta uses, the possibility of capturing the information isn't technically impossible.

However, this is much easier said than done and based on what Palotta's saying, I'm not fully convinced he totally undestands the scope of what he's suggesting to undertake, as he seems to be randomly pulling people together for a possible project.

There are a number of challenges to overcome too. First and foremost is sourcing the data, as he'd need to run whatever analytics software they build on match videos (assuming he can get access to what he needs) from matches all over the world. Processing power aside, I'd be interested in understand how long it takes to capture all the information he wants.

However, that still doesn't factor the limits of current technology. Opta, who are the source of many official football stats for matches, employ analysts for every game they provide stats for. Football Manager has 1300+ scouts worldwide to capture their data based on what I've read. For a club to effectively replace that level of scouting with some software isn't exactly a small task.

Big dreams, but for Roma, a very unlikely reality from what I can understand.
Filtering to narrow down choices is a very interesting idea.

I remember reading that a few clubs, mostly in England I think, are using the FM databse for scouting. And I am not surprised. I have been playing FM since 1999 and the game is strikingly accurate about future stars. Years in advance. My game 2-3 years ago had Cutrone as a star forward. Since Fm16 , Calabria has been a massive player.
Villas Boas used it when he was scouting for Chelsea.

Interesting....

I wouldn't say it's an unlikely reality.. It might take them a couple of years, I agree.. but it is definitely possible.

If an opportunity ever rises for me(now that is a very unlikely reality Big Grin) I would gladly join such a project.

Anyway, like you said, the most difficult task would be acquiring all the videos he needs to actually make the software a successful one.. but my guess is that he'll run into lots of licensing problems.

Technology wise, Facebook, Twitter, and even Google now are using Machine Learning for their videos and pictures, Facebook's algorithm being near a finished product for identifying people in pictures.
Google on the other hand, although still in beta stages, are using Machine Learning to capture your search query and find the relevant part in a video for you, so you don't have to watch all of it, and from what I experienced it's pretty accurate.

More so, computing power isn't really an issue here. With services such as AWS and Google Cloud Platform providing enough computing services to power half of the Internet, I don't think providing computing power to such a project would be a problem.
I don't think the technical feasibility is unrealistic, as I mentioned in my post. If achieved I do think it would be groundbreaking, as not even the opta system and the like have reached that level of autonomy.

Where my doubts lie are that a club with Roma's resources can make this happen. Pallotta's words are big, but I'm not sure he understands how he will complete the project

Well he's a billionaire, he can finance this as is own private company with Roma getting "exclusive beta" Big Grin

Besides, he's not Elon Musk, he doesn't have to understand anything.. he's a client that wants a product
Destro.......haaaahahaha. What a miss. One of the worst ones I've ever seen. It's crazy to think he played for us at one point Big Grin
