Not sure why Modric cancels out Bennacer?!(assuming this is who people are talking about when saying he'll be taking time away from younger players)
They can definitely play together in the midfield and compliment each other.
As I've said before, I haven't see Bennacer play too many times before...but the few times that I have it's been where he occupied a place a bit further up the midfield. I watched Algeria vs Nigeria the other day too, and there also he played a bit further up then what a regista would do. He consistently dropped deep to get the ball, but that was done alongside another midfielder to make a flat 2 CM line when the ball was in Algeria's half. But as soon as the ball was advanced, he was up at times even in the hole behind the striker. He did this for Empoli too. Can he play as a regista? Obviously, as people have seen him there...but he's also played further up which is what I've seen from the limited times I've seen him play, which is why I even assumed he's a mezzala/ACM when I first talked about him.
Krunic on the ither hand was always coming in as a back up so I don't think he should mean "No Modric".
So, if we can land Modric (at a reasonable price for a 33 yr old), then we should absolutely do it. Modric, Bennacer, Paqueta, Bonaventura, Krunic, De Paul (possibly)....you are talking about one highly highly technical midfield. Good luck taking the ball away from those guys as they all also move very well without it and are comfortable in tight spaces.
But not only that...it's also fiesty and hard working too. De Paul, Bennacer, Paqueta, Krunic....they are no Kante/Gattuso/Makalele...but they work hard, defend, and are super scrappy (especially De Paul and Bennacer).
Add to this a great SS alongside Piatek and the 2 fullbacks shooting up the lines (Theo/Conti/Calabria).....and we got ourselves a serious team!
