If we want to find who wrong is, it is very easy without looking the whole problem. Of course management and coach are the first to blame but they also have reasons for that. Firstly IMO, we are extremely affected by FFP and the fact we have no CL, both affect us financially while the later mentioned make us more difficult to buy quality players (no CL you have limited options to bring players that guarantee success even we have the money). However Maldini Boban still could bring players that are on paper better than our starters (Bennacer, Hernandes, Leao plus Duerte and Krunic as sub). All of them we got without any significant competition from big clubs.
Other alibi is that we have new management this summer. Maldini has his new role after the season over IIRC and Boban also came late. They also had players needed to be thrown away (and they did it by realising bench players). We have been facing problem to sell our players, mostly due to their big wage and/or overrated players. In addition, there were also players that reject to move (Hakan, Conti, Kessie). Maldini co also were also not lucky with Silva, they almost sold him very soon but Monaco made drama.
About the coach, he had our starters vs Udinese when he arrived. Crucial (or potentially important) players like Paqueta, Bennacer, Kessie joined the team very late. No wonder he seems unconvinced to field new players. We are not talking about certain players who can make different, who are just able to play with new teammates without having training for 1 minute (world class players). We have Bennacer who seems very talented, Leao despite his talent still inexperience, while Hernandes is injured. MG is new here and he brings new formation with limited option and tried to field the players to suit the new tactic. I doubt it could just bring success so early. I know he just made contradictions in his comment after the game talking about players that played not in their positions, change the formation to 433, etc but I won't judge this except he really did what he say like convert to 433, bring back Suso and Hakan in that formation and so on.
I don't disagree with your general sense here. Certainly, there are many factors that led to the poor preparation of this team. But at the end of the day, soccer is a results driven business. Results don't care about how late Boban and Maldini came into their roles or how late the new signings came as well. If we dig ourselves into a 10 point hole one month into the season, we are going to have to dig ourselves out of it later on. People always want to talk about what happens in April and May when it comes to determining the standings. But the points you get in August and September counts the same as the ones in April and May. We absolutely should not be treating early season games like preseason and continue to dig ourselves into these deep holes like we do almost every year.
The FFP is absolutely a problem, but its a problem we have known about since ever. Our entire strategy in the mercato should have been built around that. If we can't figure out a way to build a good team around the FFP limitations, then we need new management who can period.
