RE: Serie A - ACM2023 - 02-22-2013

Naturally we would expect Inter and Lazio to drop their interest in EL, but so far they have shown, surprisingly, respectable level of seriousness in that tournament. Particularly Lazio. Has anyone seen their first match against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the first leg that ended 3-3? What a fight that was!

RE: Serie A - ACMILAN1983 - 02-23-2013

I think in Italy a lot of teams are now acknowledging the importance of doing well in Europe for coefficient points. I think clubs know that if they don't start working towards doing well in Europe, never mind catching back up to Germany in 3rd place, but there's the risk of falling behind other leagues like France or even Holland. If that happens, Italian football, which already struggles with finances will further drop in level of competitiveness with other top leagues in Europe.

Therefore, it's in the best interest for the clubs to start doing well in Europe. The two who go against the grain are Napoli (mentioned already by Geo) and Udinese, both of who have other personal interests and therefore aren't always competitive in Europe (Napoli want CL more than anything and Udinese are run as a business selling its best players every summer). Good news is Napoli look likely to make CL for next season, a competition they take very seriously, while Udinese seem unlikely to qualify for European competition next season, with more competitive teams likely to take the spots.

Italian football has struggled in recent years, but I think clubs in the league are taking the correct steps to rebuilding. The finances play a part, but teams are fighting for the rights to their own stadiums (probably the biggest problem Italy faces in terms of staying competitive financially). Clubs may not have money to buy established superstars, but as we've seen in recent years from Juve, Napoli and now us and Fiorentina, a new model of bringing through young talent and building on foundations of teamwork rather than individual quality is showing positive growth in the league and it's competiveness. We're probably the most exciting club in Italy right now with our youth movement, but we're not the only ones building in a way where we're becoming competitive by smart purchases of young, exciting talents. I also think a lot of Italian clubs have been inspired by the moneyball concept. Galliani even made a specific reference to it back in the summer, and at the time I thought he had lost his mind, but now looking at where we've got to and how we got there, I can see what he meant (even if we're not following the exact strategy of moneyball).

Good news for Serie A (I think), but not for the other clubs : Roma should be bought by some Qatar sheikh (it's almost official, they only wait for guarantees from the sheikh).

With Juventus back to the high level, with Napoli improving year after year, with some clubs having some good projects (starting by us, but also Fiorentina for example) and with some clubs like Lazio able to be a threat for the big teams : adding a new big team able to buy some superstars here and there could be something good for the championship ...

Roma, like Paris, London or Madrid, need a strong club able to compete for the title and for an European competition ... Lazio is good this year, but they should end 4th or 5th at the end of the season and then, with this club, you never know how things can turn (next season, they could easily end 12-13th).

It seems the first project of the sheikh for AS Roma is to build a new stadium entirely owned by the club, and investing both to balance the books and get new players (starting with a 50M budget).

If it is confirmed and if the club buys some good stars, I predict the 2013-2014 result :
1st : Milan
2nd : Juventus
3rd : Roma
4th : Napoli
...

This year Italy has already surpassed the total it managed in three of the four preceding years. It has undoubtedly helped that the points they earn are now divided by 6 instead of 7.

Italy should aim for the 15-16 points range at least to keep Portugal at a safe distance, and to keep making up ground on the Bundesliga, who have lost 3 teams in the competition already.

The most up-to-date ranking:

Notice that if you check next year's (click on 2014), Portugal are perilously close.

Also really glad to see Napoli lose ground on Juve--serves them right after the way they acquitted themselves in Europe.

I agree with what you said, but any time that Jube won is a bad time. Sad

Lazio defeated Pescara 2-0 effortlessly. The victory was sealed early into the match, and no cards were issued, based on livescore.com (I tuned in only to see that scoreline changed, and as a result, lost all the desire to watch). Pescara was absolutely useless. Facepalm

It's almost sure that Portugal will be higher in the table than Italy for at least one season (in 2015, so for the season 2016/2017) ... But at the same time, with the current trend, and if it is like that for the next few years, Italy will be 3rd again within 10 years, but with a big change, as Germany will keep progressing I think (they are working on their whole league, and they already have one big team, if not two depending on how things will turn for Dortmund in long term), but England could possibly start falling ...

RE: Serie A - Hasan Rossonero - 02-26-2013

Yes, it looks likey but if Italy has a few good years, then they can compensate for that enormously successful year Portugal had.

RE: Serie A - ACM2023 - 02-27-2013

Fiorentina lost to Bologna. Good news for us. We need them to stay as far as possible from us.

RE: Serie A - GeoTav - 02-27-2013

Just realised how many teams are potential contenders for the 3rd spot ...

3rd - Lazio (47 points)
4th - Milan (45 points)
5th - Inter (44 points)
6th - Fiorentina (42 points)
7th - Catania (42 points)
8th - Roma (40 points)

So this week end could be very important for the next few weeks :
Napoli (2th) - Juventus (1st)
Milan (4th) - Lazio (3rd)
Catania (7th) - Inter (5th)

Which could be interesting is a win for Napoli, Milan and Catania ...
Potentially, that would give : Juventus (58 points), Napoli (55 points), Milan (48 points), Lazio (47 points), Catania (45 points), Inter (44 points) without forgetting Fiorentina too.

With a game against Juventus and Napoli coming then, by keeping our form, we would be, maybe, able to compete for the 2nd spot/1st spot by the end of the season, but would have to keep an eye on the other clubs (I like the idea of having Catania fighting for a place in EL next season because I think they would give their all as it would be their first time in Europe) ...
