RE: Euro 2012 Quarters, Semis and Final - ACMILAN1983 - 06-25-2012 Pirlo showed his class but we can't lose sight of why we let him go, particularly from a football perspective. He wants to only play in front of the defence, but he is vulnerable in these positions and stability and balance can get lost. Yesterday, he constantly had time and space to do his thing, but not every team lines up with 2 lines of 4 with no one tracking him. It wasn't just he was brilliant, but England failed to do anything to actually stop him. If he was prepared to play another role in Milan, then keeping him would benefit us. However, he's not prepared to do that and wasn't prepared to accept the contract offer. RE: Euro 2012 Quarters, Semis and Final - Mystik - 06-25-2012 Yea I'm so surprised that they gave Pirlo so much time on the ball. Relegation quality Italian teams know that they have to pressure Pirlo at all times. They just let the guy coast through the game. If you give me so much time on the ball, even I will look world class RE: Euro 2012 Quarters, Semis and Final - Hasan Rossonero - 06-25-2012 I haven't stopped celebrating http://www.notevenanoriundo.com/2012/06/azzurri-eloquent-decisive-and.html Enjoy e' Forza Azzurri!!!! Really pumped! Loving the Euros. RE: Euro 2012 Quarters, Semis and Final - ACM2023 - 06-25-2012 A fair scoreline should have been 3-0 or 4-1 as some of you, particularly Dev, pointed out. However, in my opinion, it is more that England sucked big time than Italy was that brilliant. Nobody harrassed Pirlo, let alone manmarking him tightly. Just the way he wanted; just the way he felt extremely comfortable. As Mystik said, and I agreed, even a relegation threatened Serie A team would know they need to do that. On that PK, I only have praise for Pirlo though. I don't care for the "disrespecting the opponents" argument. Screw it, it took place in a highly heated, you-die-or-I-do-so moment. The point is that Pirlo well knew that if he failed, he would be crucified and he (instead of Montolivo) would be the culprit for Italy failure, but he stepped up and decided to gamble. That's a huge gamble. He succeeded, and as he bragged (but rightfully so), it was morale-boosting for Italy and turned the momentum around. I think he decided that he was the leader and did what a leader would do and put himself on the spot. I thought that was very brave of him. That somehow reminds me of his penalties with Milan at almost all crucial moments, including 2005 CL final and 2003 Toyota Cup. It all seems that he always made the "safe" choices. That was frustrating as they cost Milan big. I don't know if it is just my personal bias, but it seems that his penalties are almost all so much better at NT level (another famous one is in the WC 2006 final shootout). I don't really miss him at Milan. I agree that we made the wrong judgment that he was over, but he had not been performing at high level in the past few seasons, not just his final season when he was injured a lot of time. It is about motivation. He has lost it in Milan and even if we kept him, I don't believe that it would be a good decision. Yet after he went to Juventus, he "decided" to revenge. What the f*ck was that? For that, I will not forgive him. RE: Euro 2012 Quarters, Semis and Final - Arildonardo - 06-25-2012 Well, I guess I'm a bigger fan of Pirlo than most others here. I can respect that, no problem. Anyway, I still think it's too easy to say: "Just mark him tight and don't give him any space and he's nothing". It's not that easy. He's been playing like this for years and it's made him one of the best midfielders of his time, it can't all be because the others were bad... Same goes for Messi. If you mark him tight and tackle him hard when he gets the ball then he wouldn't be able to do the things he does. But I guess if you ask any defender that has ever played against him, they can assure you that it's not that simple. If it was then they would've stopped him. World class players are hard to catch and stop. RE: Euro 2012 Quarters, Semis and Final - Gabriel426 - 06-25-2012 I think the best way to play against Pirlo is to run at him all the time. Make him defend, make him run, make him do all the most uncomfortable thing for him like let him play defense. Once you tired him out, he will no longer make those passes anymore. It is hard to manmark him b/c there ain't any good DM like Gattuso, Keane and Davids anymore. RE: Euro 2012 Quarters, Semis and Final - sylrus - 06-25-2012 their is a difference between "its hard to stop him" and "never mark him" i always like how pirlo dictate and pass the ball in the game but since he choose juventus as his next destination after milan i say scr*w him next season is important for us if we manage to win something important than we gonna have to build from that squad for the future if not than we need to scrap the plan and return to plan 0 RE: Euro 2012 Quarters, Semis and Final - Gio-mania - 06-25-2012 To be fair, when I read Pirlo's comments in the La Gazzetta this morning it didn't seem as arrogant or cocky as the English translations I've seen here or on other newspapers. It don't know if something genuinely and innocently got lost in translation or if foreign/non-Italian media have given the words a certain twist. I'd like to see the video of him saying it, as that would preclude any doubts in my mind. Anyway he had a very good game yesterday, though England could've handled him better. His performance did make me reminisce about his Milan days, but I also remember how he was sometimes a liability. It will be interesting to see how he performs against a top team like Germany. Actually, Pirlo relies more on his physical abilities than most of the people think ... He maybe doesn't sprint that much, but he is one of the guys running the most on a pitch. It's not easy to mark him when he is physically in a good form because he is smart, for example, against England, he managed to find the ideal position on the pitch to have the most time possible without being pressed. How ? Well, firstly, Rooney tried to press him when he played too much near the goal of Italy, so he started to stand a bit more forward, where Rooney would never come, until Gerrard and other midfielders started to press him, and then, he just went back behind, where nor the midfielders (too far from their position, as they were there firstly to defend), nor Rooney or other attacking players (too far from the Italian goal) pressed him. Against Germany, it's going to be more difficult for him because that team runs a lot, their midfield always moves as a unit and he is going to be pressed all the time ... But at the same time, when he will keep the ball, if he is in a good form, he will send good passes forward because the strikers will have less defenders against them ... So I agree with you, it's not that easy to mark him, especially when he is in a good form and of course, when the players around him move and give him some solutions to make passes (it was one of our problems at the end of his Milan career, nobody around him was moving). RE: Euro 2012 Quarters, Semis and Final - ElMago99 - 06-25-2012 It was quite interesting to see Italy full of flair and attacking prowess, even though they couldn't score. Giving Pirlo that kind of time is madness. He still makes too many dribbles in bad areas and loses the ball in bad parts of the field, however, he was very very good. I would imagine he would not be as effective against a team like Barcelona that presses high up the pitch, and don't man-mark but rather press as a team and quickly put you under pressure. However, England sitting back and trying to counter was not the best tactic. However, they felt they didn't want Italy to counter them, and besides, in all honesty they had 2-3 solid chances to score.. We had 6-7 chances. Could have been a game with multiple goals.... Montolivo did excellent but for me, Daniele De Rossi was a monster. He won every tackle, showed good passing ability, and never stopped running. When Pirlo leaves, DDR can easily replace him. For Thursday, why does Germany have 2 more days of rest. What kind of asshole concocted this schedule??? Why weren't 2 games played on Saturday, 2 on Sunday. I don't get it...? Before I comment on the game, I need to see who is fit to play..it seems Abate and DDR could join Chiellini on the injury table..the boys will be tired. |
