I think I'm with nefremo regarding Montella. I support him, I think his work has been excellent over the course of this season and while results haven't been significantly better than last year, he's given the team a much greater identity than any of the previous coaches have since Allegri's first couple of years.
All that said, to credit him where it's due doesn't mean that he's immune from being questioned on some of his decision making, especially as since he changed what he was building earlier in the season, we've gone back to what we've seen the previous season with a side that lacks belief, character and discipline.
One reason I'm so irritated that Sosa is getting started right now is Locatelli was one individual who really showed the qualities above in the early part of the season. We talked about how the young guys like him, Donnarumma and Suso really showed these qualities and a belief that in previous years was lacking. He was critical in building the identity in this team and it was a significant reason on why he was loved after coming into the team, as we complained Montolivo was lacking in all of these strengths. I get he's young, but I'd rather see him in the side and allowed to make mistakes than see Sosa in the side and perform as he has done.
I also suggested Bertolacci should start vs Atalanta following yesterday. The reason is that in the second half, he showed tactical discipline and kept tight with the other midfielders in a way that Mati was horrendous at doing in the first half. Barring Genoa and Inter, Mati hasn't put in a solid performance in the side, so why exactly is he getting the nod ahead of Bertolacci or even Poli (who has rocks for brains, but works his ass off) right now?
Same with Pasalic, his limitations outweigh one goal every handful of games. He's simply not doing enough to warrant a regular start, yet for some reason seems to play almost every game.
Quite how Vangioni has earned so many regular games I just don't understand. I get we've struggled for options, but he's possibly the most useless LB I can remember in Milan, and we've had some terrible players in the role in recent years.
Even the subs need to be questioned, as there's simply no reason to bring in Ocampos ahead of Honda as a sub. Ocampos has been absolute garbage since joining, and if Deulofeu lacks end product, it simply doesn't exist for Ocampos.
I can keep going on, but my point is that for all the respect I've got for Montella as a tactician and a man-manager thus far, I really have massive concerns about his ability to assess players, both in his selection of lineups and the rumoured targets he wants in the market. I think those concerns are fair as long he's insistent on starting these guys with no real justification for their inclusion.
