Serie A Week 9 - 30/10/04 (18.00)

Sampdoria 0 - 1 Milan
Shevchenko 76 (M)
Stadio Marassi

Substitute Andriy Shevchenko keeps Milan in the title race with a victory away to Sampdoria just hours after the birth of his son.

Shevchenko was only on the bench after driving back from Milan in the morning to be with his wife Kristen at the birth of their first son, Jordan. With Pippo Inzaghi and Jaap Stam out injured and Andrea Pirlo rested, Hernan Crespo forged a new partnership with Jon Dahl Tomasson.

Sampdoria had their confidence boosted by a 2-0 victory away at Chievo midweek and were starting to find their form, although their record against the big clubs over the last year and a half has not been impressive.

Kaka was lively from the start, but his finishing left something to be desired, then Crespo's cross-cum-shot skimmed the far post with Francesco Antonioli beaten.

Milan were dominating early on, but Sampdoria had a great chance when Massimo Ambrosini flung himself at Cristiano Doni's shot from eight yards, then Fabio Bazzani volleyed well over.

The first real save of the game arrived after half an hour, as Kaka threaded through for Tomasson and the Dane's fierce strike was well parried by Antonioli.

Kaka then chested down Billy Costacurta's pass and volleyed only to see it charged down by teammate Crespo. Paolo Maldini then charged forward on a counter-attack that was only scuppered by Cristian Zenoni's foul.

Former Milan goalkeeper Antonioli performed another fine reaction save on Kaka just before the break, but Crespo set him up with a stunning 'rabona' - crossing his legs and striking the ball with the back foot.

The visitors continued to pule on the pressure in the second half with Crespo firing over and just failing to get on the end of Gennaro Gattuso's cross.

But once again Samp were dangerous and Cristiano Doni slid on to Zenoni's low cross only to fire it over the bar.

Carlo Ancelotti made two changes on the hour mark, introducing Serginho and Shevchenko for Clarence Seedorf and Tomasson.

Perhaps the Blucerchiati's best chance of the game so far came moments later, as Francesco Flachi spun round his defender and brought a fantastic save out of Dida.

Milan struck on the counter-attack with Serginho's pace, but his cutback was deflected just past both Crespo and Shevchenko.

The deadlock was eventually broken in chaotic fashion. Serginho combined with Crespo and sprinted into the box, but Antonioli's point blank save only went as far as Shevchenko.

It rounded off a wonderful day for the Ukrainian, who barely slept and only arrived at the Stadium four hours before kick-off after attending the birth of his son, so he performed the classic 'rocking cradle' celebration with his teammates.

Sheva then set up Crespo, but the Argentine's shot was too weak to trouble the goalkeeper, while Flachi took advantage of Costacurta's error and nearly caught Dida unawares.

Milan-owned striker Vitali Kutuzov came on for the closing stages, but Shevchenko challenged him for the ball and his fine lob was slapped out of the top corner by Antonioli.

He was determined to get another goal to dedicate to his son and his angled drive was well blocked at the near post. But Bazzani did his level best to spoil the day with a splendid turn and volley that whistled past the upright, then Sergio Volpi's solo effort was closed down by Maldini.

Sampdoria: Antonioli; Zenoni, Pavan, Falcone, Sacchetti; Diana (Rossini 87), Volpi, Palombo, Doni (Kutuzov 82); Flachi, Bazzani

Milan: Dida; Costacurta, Nesta, Maldini, Pancaro; Gattuso (Pirlo 72), Seedorf (Serginho 65), Ambrosini; Kaką; Tomasson (Shevchenko 65), Crespo

I missed the game :(
I thought it was the next game
any way, I just phoned a friend who saw the game
he told me that the goal was made by Serginho who shaked and shocked their defense ( as he told me )
Seedorf was responsible for SLOW play making
All in all, the result is what only matters , 1-0 is a perfect result for this situation having Pirlo, Kaka and sheva on the bench
Serginho in for Seedorf , Sheva in for JDT , the goal came from the two sub's

Sheva the last game against Atlanta made the second goal to Kaladze , and Serginho Scored the third
Now, Serginho made the goal for Sheva .. what a lovely payback ..

Help us with summary , coz my friend says the game was not that good :(

Or is that because our expectation has risen by 30?

Milan kept our away record perfect.
Just like last season, we must win away against inter P~, Roma, and Juve.
This is the only way to win seria A again.

Ohh, we also need to improve our home record.

After I watched the highlight, I don't think Crespo did too badly, it's about the same par as Tomasson, though he had one great shoot in the first half.

Don't forget. It's Crespo who did a 1-2 with Serginho who then shoots and resulted in the goal by Sheva.

I don't know why people are complaining because I see Crespo (from the highlight, that is) quite active, although certainly he can be better.

And wait, who says that he always complains about injury? In my opinion, Ancelotti is going to prove Ranieri (who is now on the verge of being sicked) is wrong

Agree with Jeff on Creaspo - he is still at 50-60% of what he can but that doesn't mean that he played bad. All he needs is time and he needs to feel important.
I guess vs Samp we played as well as it was necessary to get the win, just like vs Cagliari. I believe that only great teams can do this and I guess, at this stage, it is the right approach given the long long season ahead of us.

Our new partnership of Crespo n Tomasson was pretty ok..but there was 1 point in time when they dint connect well together...running away from each other for the wrong reasons...but things improved in the second half were there were several good chances from both of them. Crespo however needs to brush up on the strength of his shot coz every 1 he made was like a slow grounder which made it too easy for the keeper...hopefully we could see some spectacular 'missle' from him :D

Seedorf was realli poor in playmaking our attack...he seems unsure where n who to pass...and am trying too hard to shoot from distance...so unlike him....Ancelotti should have play on Rui or Pirlo earlier as we were really lacking of creative juices without them....

Those whom have seen the match will realise our passes were not as smooth as previous matches...1-2 returns were sumtimes incomplete/ broken down by the Samp players...we played too much ground passing..n Samp knew it..that is y we were unable to break down their defence...our crosses by Pancaro or Costarcurta from the left and right flank respectively were ineffective compared to Kala's and Cafu...and to the critics on Pirlo...we sorely miss his "Grenade launching" passes from halfwayline...and im glad he came on n provide us with a few decent crosses in...

Our defence was as solid as ever...the 'veteran' defence was no where near fatigue as far as i can see... :rock3:

Serginho was an excellent sub for an off-form Seedorf...his surging runs down the left flank again proved vital as we push for the match winner and he never disappoint. Maybe this is a sign for Ancelotti to make some serious midfield shuffling. :r11:

I love the 'cradle rocking' celebration by Shev and gang after his goal..a scene to behold really~~.. :p017:

Overall a good performance by our lads...now lets head to Nou Camp for another clean sheet!!

Forza Shev!!
Forza Jordan!!

Btw, what happen to the crowd? I saw some riots there conduct by sampdoria supporters. Anyone know?

BaggioForever
30-10-2004, 23:46
some Samp fan threw sumthing at the glass wall and it cracked...the riot police, with the help of some witness from the stand manage to eradicate tt fool out of the stadium...which gave us an extra 6 mins of extra time... gd news as we can try n get 1 more goal...bad news as this also gives the Samp a chance to get 1 back...but...neither came thru...soo...tts bout all the incident have caused.

and to the critics on Pirlo...we sorely miss his "Grenade launching" passes from halfwayline...and im glad he came on n provide us with a few decent crosses in...

Nah nah nah, according to Bman's theory, pirlo is a must-not. No question about that. Ground play is the only acceptable way. You know. after all, it's easy. Just run around and receive the pass. It's TERRIBLY simple. You know. You don't need to throw 'grenade' up. So pirlo is useless.

OMG -.-!

I also thought Rui may have started, maybe he will be the one who starts against Barca then? I haven't seen the game, but I have faith in Crespo, I have seen matches against Inter and Lazio, but I think if we give Crespo time, another month or so we will get the best out of him. In the meantime Shea will just have to keep banging them in!!! What was the pass that Crespo did that was so amazing?

I have a feeling Rui Costa will start against Barca, with Serginho and Kaka coming off the bench in the 2nd half to take on their tiring defenders. Ricky has been playing too many full games since the start of the season and it's time for him to take a breather.

What was the pass that Crespo did that was so amazing?

When kicking a ball (either a pass or a strike on goal), you normally swing your kicking foot in clockwise direction (think of the swing movement of a pendulum here) past your pivoting foot, and your kicking foot will end up in front of your pivoting foot after the ball has been struck.

What Crespo did was to strike the ball in a cross-legged manner in which his kicking foot touched the back of his pivoting foot after the ball has been struck. (If you still can't picture this image in your head, you can check out that move at the Milan Video thread :grinser: )

In fact, he did this trick twice! :eekani: The first time in the derby when he was on the edge of the 6 yard box, he sent in a cross from the left to Sheva with that move and it caught the new papa completely by surprise! :delol:

He repeated the trick again against Samp at the edge of the D with a pass to Kaka, but Ricky sent a weak low shot straight into the arms of Antonioli.

It's a trick favoured by most South America players and I've seen the likes of Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Veron and Aimar all done that before in games.

IMO we got into the game quite carefully.. and when we cried out of goal, then came Sheva to secure 3 pts.
1-0 seemed good, tho Sheva almost scored his 2nd but Antonioli tipped his shot.

nice work...

FORZA MILAN!!!

I agree with many other posters; Sheva scoring and our defence continuing to keep a clean sheet are the real accomplishments of the game. The 3 points are obviously important in the scudetto race, but at this point we need to stop focusing on Juve and concentrate on getting the Midfield and the supporting strikers to get in the groove.

Ancelotti managed to sort our the defence, so I am pretty confident he will focus his attention on the midfield for a few weeks to come. The midfield should be able to exploit the solidity of the defense by venturing forward more.

Good win.

Main points are Sheva getting a goal he'll never forget. The team getting 5 clean sheets! and the 3 points.

Samp didn't have a decent chance throughout the match which is great. Crespo and Tomasson weren't up to their best but Sheva is incredible.

i didn't really know that his wife had a baby, oh am so glad that he dedicate this goal to his son, but what is really worrying is that sheva has been rescuing us again and again, i hope he won't get long term injury, because if not we will have setback :punch:
