Unconfirmed whispers suggest that Paolo Maldini is one of 14 Serie A players short-listed for the 2004 Golden Ball.
Reports in Italy this evening claim that the Milan player is one of the 50 men up for the award organised by the France Football magazine.
They will reveal the names of all the contenders gunning for the prize on Tuesday, but there are already rumours circulating on who will feature.
The Italian top-flight will allegedly contribute 14 players along with Spain, while the Premiership should have no more than 12.
Maldini is said to be one of six Milan players included as the race to succeed Pavel Nedved as the European Footballer of the Year hots up.
It is also likely that both Traianos Dellas of Roma and Theo Zagorakis of Bologna will be up for the honour after winning Euro 2004 with Greece.
However, early indications suggest that the winner will either be Barcelona’s Ronaldinho, Andriy Shevchenko of Milan or Inter sensation Adriano.
Yet given that votes are handed out by a select panel of journalists, there could be a surprise with Thierry Henry, Wayne Rooney, Ronaldo or even Ruud Van Nistelrooy in with a chance.
