View Full Version : soccer star eyes Liberian presidency
The 38-year-old lives in the United States, but enjoys near god-like status in Liberia. He is already considered a favorite among some 20 other opponents in the country's first free elections in more than 20 years.
As a soccer striker, he enjoyed huge success with Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan. In 1995 he became the only player in history to win the European, African and World Player of the Year titles in a single year. He won the FA Cup with Chelsea in 2000, and later had a brief spell with Manchester City.
In 1995, when Liberia's national team faced suspension by FIFA, soccer's governing body, over outstanding fees, he paid the $5,000 shortfall.
:tongue1: :
George Weah is a great humanitarian and has done much for his country. He never forgot where he came from, unlike some people. That said, he'd be a great choice to heal the Liberian nation, which needs it. The only drawback is that out of six presidents since the 40s, only one has died of natural causes or not been exiled with bullets flying. It is not a safe job, even for a man like Weah.
i adore weah! ... good luck from all milan fans
Yeah, I love him too and wish him all the best.

Well I wish him the best of luck
Liberia for the first true football nation!
Weah for president! :)
I remember a hugely funny (if it wasn't so serious) incident during the strife in Liberia which led to the overthrow of Charles Taylor. As Liberia was established by the USA, many were expecting them to come to their aid. But while all the trouble was going on, the Marines present in the country were too busy safeguarding the beer delivery to the embassy, in a textbook military manouevre. To make matters worse, the beer was Heineken!
Good luck to Weah. He needs it.

Now that is funny :D Them marines certainly have their priorities straight.
The Marines certainly had the right idea. Stuff intervening in a civil war when you can drink beer instead.
I always thought George was too thin to be an African leader. You need to be huge to get acceptance on that continent. Maybe he needs a few more buffalo steaks before he can rank alongside Idi Amin.
too thin? the LION?
George Weah is a God to the people in Liberia, and all around an African Pride. I'd say that gives him just about the right acceptance.
This is a great page which also contains several links inside.
