As most of you might know 1st December is the day for fight against one of the most dangerous and wide spreaded diseases. In that respect i just wanted to make some sort of tribute to all the people who unfortunately suffer from it and to give reckognition to those who fight against it and who provide HIV positive people with new lease of life.Today 40 million people of entire world population has AIDS.Situation is pretty alarming since 1/3 of these are children under the age of 15.
What is even bigger concern is that in some countries this matter is still taboo topic, hence why they even can`t get necessarry help.
I hope this thread wasn`t inappropriate and i will just remind all of you briefly what AIDS actually is. Stay safe!

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), human viral disease that ravages the immune system, undermining the body’s ability to defend itself from infection and disease. Caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), AIDS leaves an infected person vulnerable to opportunistic infections. Such infections are harmless in healthy people, but in those whose immune systems have been greatly weakened, they can prove fatal. Although there is no cure for AIDS, new drugs are available that can prolong the life spans and improve the quality of life of infected people.Infection with HIV does not necessarily mean that a person has AIDS. Some people who have HIV infection may not develop any of the clinical illnesses that define the full-blown disease of AIDS for ten years or more. Physicians prefer to use the term AIDS for cases where a person has reached the final, life-threatening stage of HIV infection.

P.S.
If you would like to know more about it,feel free to ask.I used to be a member of Serbian association for fight against AIDS and in that way i`ve learnt a lot about it.

Its not an inappropriate thread in my opinion, thanx for the thread.
The situation is alarming as you say, in some countries and regions its getting worse. Saw a recent report about where its spreading the most and among who. Pretty sad to hear about the new figures and projections.

The last 15 years about 23 000 000 people ( 23 million ) people died of aids.
more than 30 millions are infected now....
In South-Africa from 9 people 1 is infected
In Zimbabwe every third !!!!!! person is infected.
And it's getting worse and worse.
Even in europe
It's so sad

:rollani:

Maybe it is `silly` but that`s reality, and nobody can pretend like it doesn`t exist, furthermore, you never know what can happen no matter how careful you are......do you?

thats a bit harsh. some people are born with it, and dont know they have it. its an important day to highlight awareness especially in some of the developing countries. peolpe have to be educated about protection contraception etc.

also accidents happen, I myself have been very drunk and on occassion forgotten to use protection with girls i hardly knew but thankfully i didnt get any infection. but the point is I could have and whats to say somone you know might be drunk and forget to use protection and be unlucky you wouldnt think it was silly then would you?

the biggest problem here is in Africa where it is widely believed that sex with a virgin cures you of the sickness. Of course that only may mean another sick person...

The point of this thread was exactly to raise awareness. We can all pretend to be smart and to claim that it will never happen to us.....maybe it won`t and maybe it hasn`t happened so far,but if we know about it we`re already on the way to stay safe. It`s astonishing how little people know about it,and as a matter of fact,of all the diseases people die of,AIDS is on the 4th place.I wouldn`t call it silly.

P.S.
Well said almilan.

No, you don't...Blood of infected person is dangerous only if you are wounded or it gets in touch with your blood..HIV virus is very unstable in normal circumstances(environment) and dies if doesn't suceed in getting into our immune cells( macrophages, T-lymphocytes..) because it's only place where virus can multiplye itself..And when do that, new viruses get out and attack same type of cells..so more and more cells gets infected (stages from infection to AIDS)..and it's going on & on to one point when level of those T-limphocyte cells in blood is too low..that's the last stage - AIDS..you can die of a simple disease like INFLUENZA !

Hope I wasn't too boring, but I couldn't resist (i'm a med student)..
Important thing is improvement of anti-HIV drugs..thay actually stop viral multiplying and prolong time with number of T-cells above the critical level..
So, early diagnosis of hiv-infection is very important for future development of a disease..it can last for decades..

Bad thing -- drugs are too expensive and only few people use them.. :moan:
F.u.c.k.ing pharmak industry and their profit..

No..but for people in rich countries..that's what I was talking about..there is great improvement concerning drugs and if properly used they can even prevent turning HIV-infection into AIDS..
Patients in Africa certainly can't get it..drugs are licenced and there is big money around..paradox..it's useless to say anything else..
