this post goes out to all the people who think that age means better quality

yes, its true that as you grow older, u lose speed, but did it ever cross ur mind that u gain more than u lose? ... ever thought that ur reading of the game would improve??? have u ever thought that as u grow older u gain more experience??? ... maldini is no exception, maldini just doesnt listen to idiots who think that when u reach ur 30's ur done for, even at this age, putting my sentiments aside, maldini is the worlds best CB in the world, not only LB but a CB, a defenders job isnt only to clear the ball away from his goal, theres more to it than that, what makes maldini better than others including nesta is that he reads the game better than anyone ive ever seen before, and thats the most valuable thing for a footballer, it can cover all your bad aspects of the game, and maldini perfects it, nesta is a great defender, hopefully a legend in the future, but in terms of style he is no different to others like puyol and ayala IMO, maldini has the ability to command the team, maldini can take away the ball cleanly than anyone ive ever seen, maldini doesnt sacrifice himself for the ball, he doesnt need to, hes got class and that comes as you grow older. james bond is all class, howecome hes not a 20 year old?? ... it comes with age.

who is the greatest boxer of all time??? ... muhammad ali ... hands down...
he was the first person to win the heavy weight title 3 times (maybe the only one im not sure) ... the 3rd time being the most famous one, why? because he was facing the 'young' george foreman, while ali was in the end of his career.... so what did ali do?? ... he knew he would tire himself out if he attacked, he is no longer the fast ali in his youth, theres no denying that. but he won the championship down to one thing mainly, experience. he backed against the rope and let foreman punch as much as he wanted, that until, foreman himself became exhausted... what did ali do?? ... he knew it was his chance, he could only win by knockouts as foreman easily had the more punches... so ali in short knocked the **** out of foreman with a rare punch, and it became known as the most famous knockout in history.

so for all you people out there, who think that youth is better, and being old is useless, simply.... think again

thank you

I agree with you totally! Personally I prefer experience over youth in most cases. That is why I prefer Rui over Gattuso, Vierri over Gilardino and Pagulica over Dida!! ( yeah I know most of you are gonna shoot me!!!) :argue:

Gianluca Pagulica, Italian national goalkeeper in 94 and 98 worldcup! remember him? He still plays and he is very very good!

Pagliuca is Bologna's goal keeper..

I dont think I would pick Vieri over any striker from Milanmania! But yeah, experience is good if it used in the right way - example: Paolo Maldini, Enrico Chiesa, Baggio.. etc. There are a few players that got old and their experience is of to no use whatsoever, example: Vieri, Delpiero. They tend to put in one good performance a year!

Pagliuca plays in serie b now.

As for older players, they all reach a point where they go into a steep decline. Both Baresi and Tassotti played on a season too long, and were mediocre. The same affects alan Shearer in his feeble attempts to lead the Newcastle attack these days. It's all very well celebrating the achievements of Ali when he was 32, but don't foget what happened later in his career- the beating at the hands of Larry Holmes

I think age doesnt matter as long you are good. You dont need to be 20, 30 or 40 to be a good football player. Age doesnt translate to quality.

This being said, people confuse prospects with quality. You are not a prospect at 23 or 24.

I know tis kind of goes against the point of this thread, but why is it that no one ever seems to mentions that Thuram and Canna are no spring chickens. At east we have nesta who is relativly young.

I totally agree that experience is a good thing. But we're not talking about indivuals, we can afford to have 4 plus 30 year olds on the pitch. The problem is we've concentrated them all at the back, I don't expect sheva not to play when he hits 30, Seedorf will probably still get a game when he hits his 30s very soon as will Nesta still. but we should have a mix, personally I think our defense is fine just now, maybe one central backup short, but in two seasons time you can safely predict that at least 4 of our top defenders will not be playing. Cafu, Maldini, Costacurta, Stam and probably Serginho. We're going to have to buy at least 3 defenders next season, Cafu replacement, a Stam replacement,a backup who can preform to replace Costacurta and we'll have to see how Maldini feels. It's a big ask to hope they integrate into a solid, italian championship winning defense. They won't have any experience.

add to this, our midfield and attack will need looking at I just worry that we will be forced to do an Inter and buy to many players to quickly. We should have bought a defender this summer, defiently.
