Milan win Lugano chase Thursday 1 December, 2005
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Milan have beaten off heated competition for the right to buy Sao Paulo's Diego Lugano.
The latter is currently considered the best defender in the Brazilian League and has been identified as the new blood required to revive the Rossoneri’s creaking rearguard.
The 24-year-old has replaced Paolo Montero at the heart of Uruguay’s defence and had been specifically singled out by Real Madrid Coach Vanderlei Luxembourgo as the man to solve the Spanish giants’ problems at the back.
Inter, too, had been chasing the elegant stopper and are said to have made an offer to buy his registration.
Milan, though, thanks to excellent relations with the club from which they bought Kaka, have stolen a march on their city rivals, by offering £2.7m for the ownership of the player.
Whether or not Carlo Ancelotti wants to recruit him as early as this January or rather wait until the summer – and the departure of Jaap Stam and Billy Costacurta – remains to be seen.
However, the acquisition of Lugano represents the first brick in sporting director Ariedo Braida’s defensive reconstruction campaign.
Braida has also cast an eye over Felipe of Udinese over recent weeks, but with Lugano now set to arrive at the San Siro, the greater experience of Andrea Barzagli of Palermo and Chievo’s Davide Mandelli is more likely to be of interest.

6'1", 160 odd career appearances. Importanly, Italian second nationality so he won't count as the 1 allowed non-EU signing from abroad. Meaning he won't rule out a move for Alex
sweet.
I reckon we should take him in january that frees us up to make head way into getting a more experienced player from a better club. If we want a defender in january Barzagli and Manelli are the only options, if we wait to summer then Gallas and Alex become real possibilities.

I am all for this signing, as long as it isnt a repeat of our Roque Junior experience...while I maintain he is a good CB, he somehow never managed to get out of the shadow of Nesta and Maldini. (After all he did win a WCup with Brazil as the starting CB)
I will always remember with fondness and respect, his courageous final minutes in the UCL final where we beat Juve. Though injured, and in obvious pain, he limped through the remaining minutes of the game, even making a successfull tacke if my memory serves me correctly...(competely off topic) but it also recalled (Jose Luis?) Brown´s wonderful performance for Argentina when they last won the WCup, playing with what I believe was a dislocated shoulder (for the entire second half vs Germany?).
So, if these rumors are true, welcome Lugano, and I hope you live up to Uruguay´s reputation of producing stellar CBs!
too bad they aint going to the WC though :(
considered the best defender in the Brazilian League
I think yes he is , I wish to see him this winter after his team done with WTC in japan .
but is his signing official yet? cuz it seems like only channel4 state that we got him but even them say nothing about signing an actual contract.

Despite not seeing him play I trust the Milan scouts have brought a quality centreback but my hope is that he isn't rushed into the first team. When he comes I doubt he will be ready to be our starting centreback. He needs awhile to both adapt and learn from Maldini and Nesta and be eased in to the first team. Lets hope expectations don't weigh him down he could well become another Milan great.

The article pretty well says that Lugano is now ours and it's Milan managements desicion whether to bring him in January or to wait untill June.

Well, when you watch games from the Brazilian league they are ugly. Dont get me wrong, I love to watch them and there is a lot of emotion but Ds are terrible. Tons of spaces. I think Lugano is a good addition, and he is not brazilian (hence not the next roque junior).
ive seen lugano a couple of times and i have to admit he always caught my attention, he plays with alot of grit and determiantion and he always all over the place, i thought he was DM at first but it turned out heis a CB.
so juve get sagnol we get lugano!

don't know the player but uruguayan and argies are usually better defenders than brazilians, except for left/right backs and with the exception of alex .
let's see.
Barzagli is a priority though,we must capitalise the good relationships with Zamparini, Palermo's president

Sergio Aguero is really all over the news after a recent bid from La Liga.. I wonder if Milan will ever buy a player of that calibre?
I agree with Giovanni, Barzagli should be at the top of our list...
Hitmannq8, can you please let us know what's so great about Sergio Aguero? I've seen him, and heard the commentators, and read about him... nothing interested is being said about him... maybe you know something nobody else does...

We hav bought KAKA,100times better then Sergio.
I hope we get lugano and it doesn't turn out to be like cicinho where milan were the forerunners in signing him then we lost out to real madrid.

Guys, if its true i think we did the first step to "upgrade" our old defence at last...
I see a lot of high esteem here for Barzagli, is he so good? (i will search and find his thread as well)

from skysports.com
Sao Paulo defender Diego Lugano is unaware of speculation linking him with a move to Milan while Liverpool are also believed to be admirers of the centre back.
The Uruguay international is still coming to terms with his country's failure to reach the World Cup finals and is not paying too much attention to the stories claiming the Rossoneri will pay up to €4 million (£2.7 million) for his services.
Lugano is focusing on the World Club Championship in Japan with his club while the Brazilian outfit have indicated that Liverpool, Real Madrid and Sevilla also want to sign the player.
"I don't know anything about what is being said about Milan," he stated.
"It's good to know that there are European teams interested in me but, personally, at this moment, I am only thinking about how we will play with Sao Paulo in Japan.
"After that, in the future, I will decide what I will do with my career.
"In addition, to say the truth, there isn't currently anything official."
Sao Paulo's Marco Aurelio Cunha lifted the lid on the situation regarding Lugano.
"For only €4 million, I can ensure that Lugano will not leave Sao Paulo," said Cunha.
"We have already had a similar proposal this year from Real Madrid, Sevilla and Liverpool and we refused all of them."

so its not official yet.

From what I know we have the priority for his rights. And this is quite good news because he is a very very good defender. In my opinion Lugano will easily suceed in Italy because he is skilled and plays with passion.
Not sure about the £ 2.7 mi. He'll cost a bit more but even the double will be a bargain for a player of his caliber. How much Sergio Ramos cost to Madrid?
With only 24 y.o., Lugano can play for us for almost a decade!

Lugano will prove to be a productive player for us, and was acquired at a relative low price compared with other major signings (Obviously this one doesnt qualify as a Big signing).
And regarding Aguero, as I said in other thread, I dont know about many players around the world that can be labelled as the best player in the argentinean tournament while being 17 years old. He is that talented. But from what I have read so far, Milan isnt interested.

Thanks hitmann8;)
First, I like Lugano...he´s a very good defender. He´s strong in the air, good pace and good in tackle. It´s dificult to know how fast he will become used to european game. Here it had a slow start(to be fair he came here young), but right now, he´s in great form. This guy have talent.
Diego Lugano is also a great Pro and apears to be a great person. A very laid back guy, don´t like the night, is married(1 son) and is a very good citzen and teammate ...he´s a little nasty, but don´t worry, he isn´t in a Paolo Montero nasty level;)
I like this move. He´s a very solid defender w/ sealing(sp?) to improve. IMO Lugano isn´t a Alex type of defender(W. Class). But the guy is not a Roque Junior also. This guy play w/ passion and IMO can play in Milan.
Other good thing is his european passport, we can buy him now, and Alex for next season...

no, you aren't. There was never anything more than rumours - which I guess have been confirmed by Sao Paolo - that we are interested in Lugano. I am not sure why some people assumed that he has signed a pre-contract with us or that an agreement had been reached between the clubs.

silly season is contageous for me too :rotfl:
What I meant was that no website actually said anything about a deal having been concluded or some sort of agreement having been reached. All reported a strong interest in Lugano by Milan and that was all.
Anyways, I would love to see us go for Lugano and Bonera/Barzagli this winter and Alex and Gallas in the summer. I guess Cris from Lyon has also developed into a very, very good defender too. We will see what happens in about half a year :angf:
One thing's for sure though, we must act big time on the transfer market for next season and that includes all departments, not just the defence.

Today Sao paulo bought a new young defender called Alex i think. He plays in the same position that Lugano plays. Calciomercato state that Sao Paolo did that to replace Lugano who will be leaving to Milan although nothing is official. Then mentioned something about PSV's Alex, and that PSV want Chelsea to keep Alex at PSV for 2 more yrrs
we need a new defender stam and el captino r growing old !

I don't like of his soccer, I prefer Cáceres, of Atletico Mineiro, that get down to the second division, this year.
Lugano is too much violent, desleal and worst than Cáceres, from Paraguay.
What do youuu think?

Roger,
Lugano had his moments(violent) but he´s not a Paolo Monteiro...
I've seen recent match between sao paolo and al ittihad( if thats right spelling), and I've been "scouting " Lugano and Cicinho...... Lugano is a player that is really intelligent in his positioning, can lead the defence and has some power in him. But he sometimes looked slow against Kaloon and made some errors, he looks like a decent player.Still, not chivu, nesta, maldini class.... Cicinho once again shoved he will be one of the best RWB in the world, he plays some very good crosses, he can run all day and his passes are extremly intelligent. Oftenly he was so fast he run most of sao paolo counter attacks..... on the other hand, its a shame he is not a bit tougher be3couse he simply doesnt look like someone who can do his defensive job perfectly, we was out of the position few times and his man marking is poor. He could work on that in Milannelo and I believe he can be good replacement for Cafu. remember, we have gattuso on the right to cover for him.

IMO the best young defender (From Latin America) is playing in Argentina and his name is Gabriel Paletta.
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/players/stats?id=64677&cc=3888
I always wonder if Milan has advanced scouts in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, among other countries.
For example, if Milan were to buy Paletta now, they wouldnt spend more than 3M Euros. And if they wait until he goes to one of the bigs clubs like Corinthians, Boca Juniors or River Plate, their asking price will be 6M Euros and more.
And Lugano is a good player IMO. I would add him to our squad. He is a low risk, high reward player.

We really saw the same game :)
Lugano did not have his it´s best game...but, to be fair, to play pair w/ Ed Carlos(S.P. Defender) displayed more its weaknesses. IMO Lugano is a good option to Milan. As you said , he´s not a nesta , Maldini, but is a very good player for the team.
Your Cicinho scout is perfect.
Against Liverpool, defensively Cicinho was aweful, he was consistently beaten by Kewell and even Warnock and Riise went past him. He'd have to improve alot defensively for me, show a bit more toughness and composure. I'm sure he could develop with the right facilities and people around him, but he's nothing special defensively right now. As for Lugano, well he had a few good points today but again he didn't look anything special. He was slow and reckless, although against players with no pace he was fine and his marking was usually spot on. But both throw themselves around like they've been hit by a truck, a trait which i hope they grow out of damn quick because it's not a very nice quality.

i never heard of diego lugano before...i did watch the sao paolo liverpool game and was not impressed. if it is true that milan has already sign lugano, why on earth did they not sign Rafinha when he was in brazil. rafinha showed more potential then either lugano or cicinho. this is bad scouting in my opinion.

Lugano was ok when the ball was coming in aerially but he wasnt too good when it was coming at him on the ground. He was quite lucky to stay on the pitch as that cynical hack he did on Gerrard stopped an almost certain goal (though with Liverpools finishing yesterday they probably would have messed up that chance too ;) )
Cicinho didnt impress me at all though, he is good going forward no doubt about it, but he is so poor defensively that even Harry Kewell managed to torment him  Liverpool used various players down the left during the game and all of them exposed his defensive failings. Im sure Ronaldinho would be delighted to see him fellow Brazilian line up against him for Real next year :)

20-12-2005, 12:46
But Cicinho is more of cafu style which will attact from the right and cross the ball for header.I only saw his hightlight match.
Just because Cicinho runs around alot like Cafu, doesn't mean he's a good right-back, his defending is terrible and that HAS to be the priority. What's the point of getting a gung-ho right-back when our defence is already fragile enough right now ? It would just make things worse. Let Real have him, he'll fit right in.
Revelliere is far better and far more suited to us, he attacks as good as Cicinho and defends incredibly well also.

When Milan doesn't seem even slightly interested in a player, it's kind of odd to say that we don't have a chance of signing him. He is a very good player but is far from untouchable, not even close to it - I assume that this is what you meant by that "no chance".
the latest news today is cafu and stam will leave milan at the end of this season, although i want cafu to stay longer. this season might be the end for costacurta too. i am not sure about lugano, but our priority in strengthening the defence should be to sign italians. i feel that local players generally are more patriotic and attachment to their own nation clubs than foreign players which can make a big difference. i really hope we can sign barzagli and reveillere(he is not italian though).
