Milan turn to £10m Chivu

Milan are looking to resolve their defensive difficulties by raiding Roma for Cristian Chivu, according to reports in Italy.

Chivu has been with the Giallorossi since the summer of 2003 and has two-and-a-half years left on his current contract, but Milan are prepared to shell out on the right player to plug the gaps in their creaking defence.

The Romanian is still only 25 years old but has a wealth of experience after making his name with Ajax at an early age.

He is also a versatile defender who can play at both full-back and in central defence.

Chivu suggested that he would be prepared to move on when he jumped to the defence of Fabio Capello last month, after the former Roma Coach was publicly criticised by Francesco Totti.

"Capello brought me to Italy and I would like to team up with him again," he said at the time.

"I must thank him because the fact that I am here is also down to him. When it comes to Capello, all you have to do is look at the number of League titles he has won."

However, Milan could now lure Chivu to the San Siro with a bid of £10m – a fee that the cash-strapped club from the capital would have difficulty in turning down, especially after the lesson they have learnt with regard to Antonio Cassano, for whom they will struggle to recoup much of their £20m outlay.

With Paolo Maldini, Marcos Cafu and Billy Costacurta out injured and approaching the twilight of their careers, Milan know that reinforcements are badly required in order to rebuild their ageing side.

The arrival of Chivu in January would also strengthen their Champions League challenge as the Resita-born left-back is eligible to play in the competition, having only appeared in the UEFA Cup with the Giallorossi this season.

I think so, which means we can only use him for the Serie A. :(

read the entire article people....it says hes eligible to play in CL....anyways with chivu, we get a veteran at LB, but also a solid CB. i said we should definitely try to get him for january. if chivu comes aboard, we still can take a shot at the scudetto.

please let this be true....and with lugano and Rb in the summer, our defence is once again the strongest in the world.

I think Chivu can play any role in defence, RB, CB, LB just like Gallas.

Top player, but he is injury prone

Actually I prefer Chivu to Gallas. Even though he is injury prone. He is younger and another + that he knows what is calcio italiano. So I go for Chivu, if it is possible.

I'd go for both of them for we will need them given that Maldini will retire next year, not to mention that Paolo's last year with Milan could be one plagued by injuries and such.
IMO, getting Alex and Gallas is a must for next season - and this is just regarding central defence. Would welcome Chivu too as having him won't be a luxury but a necessity given the vast changes we are facing for next year with Billy and possbly Stam leaving, while Maldini could face a struggle to stay fit.

i agree.. we both think alike, its really freaky! :D

i would go for oddo and 1 of gallas/chivu/alex now ... then in the summer i would go for one of the remaining two.

Didn't see the Lazio-Juve game, but hear/read that Oddo was one of the best players on the pitch. Given that his price is rumoured to be ~3 mil euros, and given our obvious need for a RB with Cafu being absent for practically all of the season so far, It would moronic, to say the least, if we miss on the guy.

You got to be kidding me, he had so many bad moment with his crosses that ended up in the stand and way high over the goal.

I don't know, as mentioned, that's what I read/heard about that game but I didn't watched it. Still, for such a low price and with our problems at RB, there aren't many better solutions the managemnet could come up with.

I second that, Chivu can still be useful as he is still young and rather familiar with Serie A. On the other hand, His injury-proneness can prevent long-term any long-term commitment and good display from him. So I would also like to see Gallas and Alex sogn for us over the summer.

I still think he could be a good bang for the buck given his price, at least for the time being b/c I think Cafu has started feeling his age. He can hardly play three full games in a row... Once you're past a certain age, fatigue and injuries keep haunting you

true i think cafu is gonna retire soon, and i doubt im gonna be wrong (though wish i am) because unlike players like maldini and costacurta, cafu is probably the player that runs the most in the world and when certain signs of age show to a player like that experience isnt as handy as it is to maldini and costacurta, because his role is to run alot mainly and with probelms with his leg im not sure cafu will be playing after the world cup or atleast the season after to be more accurate.

oddo on the other hand has bags of serieA experience and some internationally and in europe, he is also at an age where players reach their peak, and for that price im willing to take my risk on him, to be honest im pretty sure hell succeed here, as long as we use him not like we are with janku who i thought the same way when we started to be linked with him before the summer.

as for alex and chivu, chivu has an advantage of being able to play in two positions (CB and LB) but his injury proneness cancels that in a way, he does have an extraordinary free kick while the same can be said of alex - not that we really need them with pirlo right now :D, but theyde certainly be welcome to have some chances - ... alex i think has everyhing he needs and more to be a star if not a legend in italian football, he is made to play italian football, if milan get him id be as happy as the day we got nesta, i never saw alex play a bad game honestly, he like nesta is always serious about the game and we kinda need that these days dont we? :) ... either way id be hppy with both!

No doubt the Milan defence does need some definite tuning. The fact that we have had 10 goals scored against us from set pieces speaks for itself. Serginho, Simic and Kaladze have done an excellent job while the usuals have been out and if anything have probably done better than the old firm. Theres a few quality defenders around Milan could target as you have all mentioned in Chivu, Oddo and Alex. If Milan could get him, Lucio would be an awesome pickup, what irony that would be considering who we drew in the CL :P. By the way anyone know Janku hasn't been given a run at LB..

Because he had many good oportunities to cross a ball very dangeroulsy however he failed.
