View Full Version : Very Good news for Azzurri : Nesta is ready for quarter finel
Alessandro Nesta’s World Cup is not over and, although he’ll miss the Australia match, he could recover in time for the potential quarter-final date.
The Milan defender limped off during the opening stages of Thursday’s 2-0 victory over the Czech Republic with a recurring groin problem.
Tests were completed this morning and Italy doctor Enrico Castellacci confirmed the injury was not as serious as some had feared.
“There are no large bruises,” he explained. “Obviously he won’t play against Australia, but we are trying to get him back to full fitness as soon as possible. We’re optimistic.”
There were originally concerns that he could be out of action for up to 15 days, which would effectively end his World Cup participation.
However, although he’ll skip Monday’s match with the Socceroos, it’s likely he would be ready if Italy reached the quarter-finals on June 30.
It’s believed that Marco Materazzi, who replaced Nesta against the Czechs and scored the opening goal, will step in to the centre of the Azzurri defence.

I hope thats true. Without Nesta, they won't win the championship
hope this is true .. Italys defense is mush more stronger when the best defender in the world is there !!
COM`n NESTAA !! :frustrat:
On Eurosport today they said the opposite:
Italy stopper Alessandro Nesta is highly doubtful for the Azzurri's quarter final clash with Ukraine in Hamburg on Friday as he struggles to get over a niggling groin injury. The centre half has already missed one match, against Australia, after the problem flared up during Italy's final group game.
"It won't be easy," team doctor Enrico Castellacci said. "He is following our programme and is improving but it is gradual. We said we would try and get him back as quickly as possible but we want to avoid any other problems for the lad."
The injury leaves Marcello Lippi with a real selection headache, as Marco Materazzi is suspended for the quarter-final following his red card against Australia.
Andrea Bazagli is almost certain to come in and partner Fabio Cannavaro in the centre of defence, as Lippi does not have any other recognised defenders in his squad.

What is the source and date? I believe Susi's source more because your article is obviously from before the match against the Aussies.
I agree Vadim :)
Dil Dil's source must be older, just because it say's Matterrazzi could replace Nesta, while we all saw yesterday, that Matterrazzi can't play, because he is definately barred for the quarter finals.
From the official site....

DUISBURG – According to the Azzurri medical staff it is unknown whether or not Alessandro Nesta will recover from his adductor injury in time for Friday’s World Cup quarter-final against Ukraine: ‘Nesta is following the schedule set out for his recovery, he is undergoing numerous physical therapy and muscular strengthening sessions. There’s gradual improvement. We want him to recover as soon as possible without taking any risks. It won’t be easy for him to recover in time for the quarter-finals. He will undergo further exams tomorrow and we remain confident.’

It would be great to watch Nesta shut down Sheva. That would be gold. I don't know how confident I would be seeing Barzagli in there at this level.

The BIG news from Ukrainia camp is Veronin out of Copa Mundial...These are two big loses for both teams, but they cancel each other out, as Italians are great defenders..
Sheva will be remembered in Italy as AC Milano through and through, Nesta will be immortalized as a Lazio and if he conqueres for 5 more years, AC Milano also ...

This is a good news for Ukraine actually, since everyone saw that Voronin
sucks bid time. He was terrible in last 3 games. We will be much better off
with even Vorobey for some time followed by Milevsky coming on his sub.
P.S. what a bird's name team this is ! ....
Vorobey, Voronin, Gusin and Gusev, no wonder they play so poorly, since these birds (Vorobey, Vorona and Goose) are very slow fliers.

I read today that he will definetly miss the QF against the Ukraine :(. It will be a big loss for Italy but hopefully the Azzuri can roll over the Ukraine and Nesta will feature in the Semi-Final.

Someone from Azzuri had already commented on Nesta's missing the 1/4-final game by saying "we will need him very much in the next game". ... )))
And the retort from Ukrainian fans was,
"Yeah, of course you will need Nesta back in your line-up in the earliest Serie A game". :zany:
I just translated what I read at football.ua

They shouldn't say things like that or it might backfire. If you don't focus on the next game you can easily run into difficulties.

^agreed. I hope they go into the game focused and ready to play and not looking ahead to the Semi's. Otherwise, like you said, they will have some trouble

Nesta ruled out of Ukraine clash
29 June 2006
by AFP
Alessandro Nesta has confirmed that he will not play in Italy's quarter-final clash against Ukraine after failing to recover from a groin injury.
The 30-year-old, who missed Marcello Lippi's side's 1-0 Round of 16 win against Australia, is hopeful of being fit for the semi-finals should the Azzurri advance.
"I visited a clinic here in Duisburg and there's still something not right," Nesta said.
"It has improved a great deal, but I can't play in this match. However I'm confident of making the next one if we get there. The doctor has given me some hope."
Nesta's replacement, Marco Materazzi, was sent off against Australia and is therefore suspended for the Ukraine match.
That means the less experienced, but highly-rated 25-year-old Andrea Barzagli will come in at centre-back to play alongside Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro.

Mate, we're so glad to even be in the quarterfinals we can afford to joke about it, considering that there will be no pressure to advance. I don't think they were serious when they made that comment, no one who is in their right miond can say that Ukraine will beat Italy 100%. Its a possibility, but a very slim one.

I was talking about Italia have to go to the game focused. They will have to be prepared for Ukraine, and Ukraine only, in hopes of advancing

This is for too typical of the azzurri--get caught looking ahead, assuming the team they're about to face is going to roll over a die. Let's hope the squad is focused on Friday's game ONLY. :musk:

I've read some reports that Nesta is still not sure if he can play against Germany. Apparently he still has to go through more tests to see if he can play. Anybody hear anything about it? I certainly wouldn't want to see Italia play Germany without Nesta at the back

Yeah, I heard the same thing last night when we were watching some of the WC news shows. Let's hope he'll be back!
Sad....I've gotten so hooked on the WC that I even have to watch the news reports that Fox Soccer Channel carries, and one of them is from Sky News and last night the reporter in the studio was this chick who really looked like a cow and had the most annoying voice. :5milan:

This morning's soccer show in Ontario said that the Italian Doctors said Nesta is "Doubtful" for the Germany game. He is improving but he still is a long way from being able to play, according to team doctors.
But yah here there is a soccer show on any given channel at any time of the day. In the mornings its on 2 channels, being replayed all friggin morning, then afternoon carries a different soccer show on a different channel, then at night all the channels have it! Its crazy, but I always find myself watching atleast one of them haha

Nesta out, Camoranesi recuperato
3 Luglio 2006
by FIFAworldcup.com
According to this, it looks like Nesta is still having trouble even practicing with the squad.
Nesta was training for the semifinal, and he started feeling the same problem...
he stopped training... looks like he will not be ready for tomorrow.

if that problem reacurred, there's a good chance we won't be seeing Nesta any more as there's less than a week of WC football left and that's hardly enough time for him to recover even if Italy do make it to the final. Too bad if that game vs the Czechs turned out to be his last game at a WC event :(

unfortunately you are probably right. I really really hope he is able to recover though, both for his own sake and for the country

Nesta will miss the Semi-Final against Germany. Materazzi will be his likely replacement.
Lippi is hopeful that Nesta will be fit for the Final or 3rd place play-off.
It's going to be really harder for italian squad without nesta :(
