View Full Version : General Italian Football Discussion

This thread is for general discussion of Italian football, like the title suggests because there isn't one like this already for some reason.

Inter beat Viola 3-2 today. Inter played decent, but almost threw away a 3-0 lead. The announcers on GOL TV were reacting as if Inter were the team of the century. They had a couple of nice goals by Cambiasso but I don't think they were that incredible. Luca Toni was amazing, he has to get back in the squad after a performance like this.

Juve tied Rimini 1-1 even after they played with a man advantage for the last 25 minutes. If they continue to play like this I don't see them getting promoted.

Rimini 1-1 Juventus
This was an historic occasion that marked the Bianconeri’s first ever Serie B game but, despite the revocation of their last two titles, they wore the Scudetto symbol on wristbands. There was a good save on Pavel Nedved’s screamer and Alessandro Del Piero’s header looped over, but Gigi Buffon had parry a deflected Matri header. Matteo Paro eventually opened the scoring, thumping in a charged down corner kick. Buffon saved Jeda’s dangerous header and Domenico Cristiano picked up a second booking for a dreadful tackle on Nedved, but 10-man Rimini equalised when Adrian Ricchiuti took advantage of a foolish mistake from Jean-Alain Boumsong. The home side actually had more of the pressure in the final stages
Scorers: Paro 60 (J), Ricchiuti 74 (R)
Sent off: Cristiano 69 (R)

Some strange news:

OK, I will join in here ... here is what I posted in another thread about the "rock-solid in defence and completely unpredictable in attack" Inter  :

I can't say I am impressed by Inter, not at all. Fiorentina were just too wasteful upfront and too naive and lacking concentration at the back and allowed Inter to score when La Viola had the upper hand in the game. Bsasically, single episodes of bad/naive defending allowed Inter to take a 3-0 lead in a game where they managed about 3-4 sensible attacks, the rest of the game was basically Inter watching Fiorentina playing.

Towards the end, I saw the good old Inter ;) ... also, Inter usually have solid start for every new season but with time they fall off the race. I personally expect the same thing to happen this year as well - at first they will have some good results, this will get them complacent, problems will arise in the dressing room - don't see either Ibra or Adriano, and Samuel too, to be happy with the bench for much longer - and things will soon get back to normal for them :)

As for Juve, nice to see that the Boumsong move is already paying off :w262: :nana: :ilol:
As long as they stick with him, he will guarantee them a nice long stay in the lower divisions :dcool:

I saw the Fiorentina-Inter game and I too am not impressed by Inter. As a matter of fact, Fiorentina was the better team on the field in terms of ball movement. They occupied the pitch better then Inter and spread the ball around better. The problem form them was that even with impressive ball movement they failed to create goal scoring opportunities up untill the first goal of Toni. Inter on the other hand played unimpressivly but found space to create some chances and use a couple of counters to score.( Reminds me of Juventus last year......almost never the better team but always found a way to score and hold on)
Vadim....I think you meant a 3-0 lead is what they almost threw out. It seemed however that once they took out Materazzi, Toni got some freedom in the box. Materazzi really did a great job on Toni....something that Samuel failed to do.

I don't know anything about the Juve-Rimini game. I thought that Juventus was going to win, but obvioulsy comming back to Serie A isn't going to be that easy.

Roma also started off pretty good. Beating Livorno with a comfortable 2-0 result. I didn't see the game, just read the report. If anyone saw the match, please let us know how good is this Roma team!

Roma had a solid game for a season opener - the first half was a sleeper and at the end, almost out of nowhere, De Rosi scored with a screamer form the limit of the PA. Livorno were more or less equal to Roma in that 1st half.
Roma woke up in the second half and were easily the better side as they created a number of opportunities for more goals - scored one through Mancini and Totti wasted a PK.
Now, they had a good game vs Livorno but that's hardly a measure for how good Roma really are as Livorno looked despirited after the 2nd goal, which basically ended the game.
Roma are a good team - I am sure we all know that - but really don't see them challanging for the title or leaving a memorable trace in the CL. They are basically the same team from last year and with the lack of a first class striker, their perfomance will heavily depend on how Totti plays, even much more than before since Spaletti seems to be keen on playing Totti up front and Mancini in a supporting role.
The one "major" signing they made - Pizarro - was basically their worst player on the field today and got subbed off early in the second half. So, I really don't see Roma making a real challange to Inter and Milan for the title - they are a good, solid team that will create problems for anyone they play but not good enough to be champs, IMO, not even with Juve gone and Milan at -8 pts

Inter is horrible. They won 3-2 but those that saw the game know that this result is as wrong as it gets. Fiorentina outplayed Inter all over the field.....except in front of Frey! The only reason Inter scored was because of stupid defensive led-downs by Fiorentina defenders and NOT because Inter played great and outplayed Fiorentina. The problem for Fior. was that even with great ball possesion and making great ball movement, they failed to score.
Inter's midfield is too flat with the likes of Dacourt, Vieira and Cambiasso. There is just no flare, no attacking options.....there is nothing. They were dissapointing and if the Fiorentina defenders weren't sleeping Inter never looked like scoring!
GolTV almost always add praise tidbits of players in their game commentaries anyway which is sooo annoying. :sweeteye:

C’mon I think Inter didn’t play that bad! :) Who’s gonna admit they were impressed with Inter anyway? :d6:
It was indeed absolutely nothing special, nothing extraordinary but for the first half of the match, their midfield and defense were strong. Both Ibra and Crespo both had their chances to show their skills at front (not all the time) and Cambiasso was their man of the match scoring two and assisting one. :)

Fiorentina’s defense was dreadful and Inter exploited them for that. La Viola was doing better for the 2nd half and I did hope they would score once more since Inter was just sputtering :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: towards the end. :lick:

Did anyone see Atletico M. vs Valencia? I saw parts but F. Torres got red carded for dissent. It was an unfair call since there was almost no contact with the goalie.

De Rossi had a good goal check it out.

2 contenders of goal of the season have been scored in the Palermo game. Bresciano's over-head kick with his back to the goal was amazing. And Biava's backheel was just simply unbelievable. You will never EVER see a goal like this again. It's a once in a lifetime goal, something like Van der Vaart's backheel goal for Ajax.

Im impressed with the Serie A standards in the first week thus far. I hope Serie A will continue this way and prove to the world why its the best in the world.

Toni scored two yesterday, is he back in the same form he was last year to lead all of Europe in scoring? I didn't see the game, or the goals so I don't want to form an opinion based on nothing... though I would put the question out to all of you?

Are there any promising strikers in Serie A atm that milan could look at. I dont see much of italian football, only 1 game is broadcast a week, so i dont know the players from other teams that well exept of course from milan

David Suazo from Cagliari - at 26 yo he is more of a finished product rather some promising youngster but when it comes to getting a striker in itlay who has the quality to play for Milan, I think he should be on top of our list.

Mirko Vucinic(Roma), Stephen Makinwa(Lazio), Igor Budan(Parma), and Emiliano Bonazolli(Samp) are also intereseting players, IMO.

RIO

Haven't we been linked to Suazo for some time? I think it was in Tuttosport, so take it with a grain of salt (a whole salt lick, more likely), of course. He has been playing in Italy for quite a long time, so I was suprised to see he is only 26. Vucinic is intriguing, but when is the last time Roma let someone good go? They are really smart about when to sell a player, I think, so good luck prying him out of their grasp until he's past it.
As for inter, I will be interested to see their next match. Even with the GolTV announcers sucking up to them (which they did for Juve last year with some regularity, too bad they can't this year ;) ), it was obvious they have some problems in the midfield and in defense. Sure they have a million quality strikers, but who will get them the ball and keep the other teasm from regularly scoring three? I'm not convinced with them, yet, and with the poor coaching they get from Mancini--who's an idiot--and the certain over-confidence of the organization, they'd best win a bunch early or it could be fun to watch them crumble. :D

After winning an away game against West Ham United, Palermo wins on the road again against Lazio. Foggia :smileani: came in as a sub. Lazio were enjoying greater ball possession and were more successful in building up attacks but the goalkeeper was just too good. Peruzzi was beaten by TWICE by Di Natale's lobs. After their 2-0 lead, Palermo was just doing defense by the numbers in the 2nd half and the GK (MOM) made awesome saves.

Lazio and Fiorentina are still stuck in the negativeness. Steal some points from Inter. :5inter:

Agree. Lazio were able to score against us in their away game while they couldn't score against Palermo on their home game and conceded 2. I've never seen Palermo play till last Sunday but from that match, I hope they do well in the UEFA Cup. The match was quite entertaining. :tong:

Imagine, it was supposed to be Lazio playing for this cup. Livorno & Parma were able to snag wins as well. Even Roma was supposed to be in UEFA Cup only. I don't think any Italian team is in the Intertoto Cup because Empoli doesn't have a license.

After the scandal, it gave lower ranked teams a chance to play a notch up in Europe. I think this is good overall for Serie A in general to gain that balance, competitiveness and experience (unlike French ligue where Lyon just takes the majority). :neww:

Actually, after the Calciopoli, I want all Italian teams to do well and make win upsets in Europe for more representation and also to somehow reestablish Italian football's image. :v103:

I agree, Palermo is looking strong this year from what I have seen. I have to admit I have a soft spot for Palermo, partly because of The Godfather and The Sicilian and partly because I hate those butchers of Messina :d55: I still haven't forgotten what those cheap bastards did to us in the match before Barca. Plus it takes real men to wear pink :D

Inter-Roma will be a key match and I think it will have a lot do with the final standings. A draw will be best for us, assuming we beat Ascoli we will be at 1 point. -4 from Inter and -6 from Roma. If Roma wins we will be just 3 from Inter, but I don't feel good letting Roma get that early advatage, especially since they've started so hot.

Brrraaavvvooo Palermo!!! 3-0 vs West Ham today! (4-0 agg) And to think that Zamparini wanted an exit. What does he get? A solid win from 3 goals!

Other results:
Parma - Rubin 1-0 (2-0 agg)
Pasching - Livorno 0-1 (0-3 agg)
Chievo out

Any of you please bring the UEFA Cup back to Italy!

American Style Play-offs For Serie A?

The President of Lega Calcio, Antonio Matarrese stated that he would be in favour of introducing these new rules to generate new income and also add more interest to the season.

With Inter already almost certain of winning the league title, with more than half of the season still to be played, the Lega are trying to come up with ideas to make future leagues more interesting, especially for the title race.

The most accredited idea seems that of introducing the American style play-offs and decreasing the number of Serie A teams to either 16 or 18, with two relegations instead of the current three.

The first eight would then face each other in direct clashes, starting from the quarter finals, and the final winner would take home the Scudetto. This would also be valid for the relegation issue with the last eight facing each other out

I don't like this idea .. what do you thing ?
