Hi guys, i dont know if all of you know but i have offered to help re-design the MilanMania site. I have came up with a few ideas but really i need a structure and plan to what things should be on the page. So this is where you come in, what would you like to see on the MilanMania page?
These are a couple of my ideas
-- Having a Newscroll for Newsflashs i.e Transfer News.
-- Livescore thing for matches
-- A page to say how fans can watch each game i.e "its on Tvants mate"
-- i renember someone talking about like a quickchat option on the forums...
Possible ideas
News Page ( this can be done in a blog, easy to update)
History.. (maybe like a idiots guide to Milan)
Newsletter...
Merchandise page, "get ur Milan tops from here"
Problem with some of these pages is that they are basically what goes on in the forums... is it then worth making a separate page for it?

When you say re-designing the MIlanmania web site do you mean also changing the forum,cuz i think adding some extra options to the forum its not a bad idea,
I think the admins also can take care of that.

i think the best thing to add to the forum would be the quick chat option, the other stuff like you said we already have on the forum but it would be nice to have a news page though :)

Thanks for the support guys, im hoping to use the same kinda site format as the example, it just needs alot of work on it !
The Animated Top bar i will keep, im hoping to use a Picture of the san Ciro as a background, and maybe have scrolling trophies on it? At the moment only Rivera shows up, but im hoping to add Van Basten and Maldini soon also!
We need to discuss with Rezag about the quick chat option, it might involve upgrading the forum, but im not sure?

now now now Jimmy boy. i know there's been a tussle between the two of you. perhaps we should be agree on the bigger points of being Milan fans, and to put away any disagreement with the English league.
I like it graeme, especially little things like having the table and a news scroll. And what about a background of trophies with photos of legends scrolling by?

What do you need help for? You attack & accuse other people, yet when the tables are turned and you are 'critiqued' (for that is all that i'm doing ;)) you act all helpless.

Ok Jim have it your way. Just be cautious. BTW I wasnt talking about his web design. I was complimenting his profile on his website. He and I havent had a tussle yet. I dont have a tussle with you. I'd like to keep both of it that way.
I have no beef with you Kui, but i don't see what i have to be cautious about.
I'm saying be cautious as you might be dealing with someone who is close to falling off the cliff. I dont want you to be near that. know what i mean?

ive been working on it the last couple of days, i will try and get another update with pictures.. Oh yeah and thank you Jim for the advice on Css border thingy, it sort of worked :)
couple of things.. i have ditched the java based scroller as it was to heavy and not alot of people have a java runtime thing installed. Lets just say its simular to the Gazzetta dello sport one now :) I also changed a few things...
I was also wondering about a Forums image gallery maybe? If anyone wants anything particular this is the time to say, im drawing up what content i want on the first page...

An image gallery that is tied in to the pictures posted on the forums is a good idea. I mean take one thread (Member pics or L'Inferno Rossonero Gallery for example) and there will be a page where all the attachments posted in it can be seen on their own.

Well, if it makes any difference....I've just been on MSN with my friend Angelo Destro, who works for AC Milan. He was poking around the main part of the site, asked me if I was still in charge, was asking me all sorts of questions, trying all the links, said we need to get rid of the FDL link. Hehhee....ahem :embarass: ....makes me just a tad nervous that he was suddenly very interested in us. Wanted to know about acmilan-online and all those fan sites we have links to--none official, right, then what are they? I explained that we exchnaged links with other fan sites. he'd found a MM shirt that he must have gotten from Jan and he put it on--don't ask, I have no idea why! He was packing to go to Brussels with the team! (nice perk of working for them and doing such a good job when the San Siro was the site of the Final)
A nice chat, makes me feel good that he still watches the site, makes me start to think all over again about approaching him to take our site to the appropriate people....but we need to do alot of work before I'll feel confident to do that. So...we also need to do some serious talking aobut what do we want on the main part of the site. History? News? what??? We are being watched....
There is a lot of material from the Milan History thread that we can use. News would be hard, I doubt we can find someone who can update that section, and people get their news from other sources anyway. Maybe a Classic Image gallery, I have plenty of pics of Championss League Triumphs and Scudetti, most of which I have posted in the Milan History thread.

Debs are you serious? that is interesting, we have to be careful in some ways what we say, and what pictures and information we use! what does he mean by FDL link?
The news thing i am working on, i might give mods access so they can update the news themselves, it isnt a hard thing to do.. we could do insight in fans like what we think about things.. The club might not like it, but it will be cool if they take fans opinions in! If we do the blog news right, it could do good for the site..

He means the link on the milanmania.com front page, I think he means that it is pointless to have a link to the FdL page considering they have broken up.
Maybe we could have an image gallery, we could take the images from Yahoo Sports Gallery (http://sports.yahoo.com/search?p=ac%20milan&photos=1&sp=1&ep=150), unless that is some sort of a copyright breach. We could also have a section on ultras choreographies, I have plenty of pics on my PC.

Yeah, I think he was just trying to say any info on the FDL link is out and no longer relevant. If we could get a news feed that would be cool, but graeme, didn't you say they all cost $$? Well, if we could hook up to the team.....I won't carry that thought out any further!
And no, Rahul, I don't usually have access to gossip about the team/players b/c that's not his department. Once in a whuile he'll tell me stuff that he's been told or has found out, like he told me about the Shev conference as it was happening and explained to me what was going on.
And yes, zzZZZzz, he does sometimes read the forum. He's even told some of the players about it, this was a long time ago so I don't know who might remember it, you just never know. The fact that someone in management knows aobut us is one reason I will not stand for any sort of threats to Milan players, past or present!!!!! We don't need to be hauled into court, slapped with any sort of litigation, or ordered to shut down over stuff like that!
The interesting thing is, when Angelo and I first met online and in fact up uintil just 2 or 3 seasons ago, he was an Inter fan. Had been born into an Inter family, the poor man. Then...he switched! One day while we were chatting he announced he had left those losers Inter and realized that Milan was a much better team, and ever since he talks just like I do when I speak of the team.."we did well", "We can't score anymore..", that sort of thing. And BTW, even he has to point out that we longer know how to score, we have no decent forwards....

Hey Debs the blog thing isnt that hard to do,its just picky... im working on one for my own personal site "http://www.graemechidgey.com/index2.php" using a free wordpress blog tool. We could use Blogger or some blog site to make and edit the blog..
I have a crazy idea to create a podcast aswell as the news, i think it will be very different thing to do! (been listening to loads of Ricky Gervais podcasts)
Vadim its not a good idea to use images from Yahoo as it is really a minefield of copyright laws. Some places say there pictures are royalty free which means you have to pay a charge to have the picture with unlimited uses.. if you get what i mean.. It might be best to just use our own pics, and maybe il make up a excel form so we know who has donated which pics and when?
Graeme is right--we have to be very careful of copyright with pictures as well as news! Especially if we're going to offer this stuff as part of the main site. I'd put my vote in to use pictures members have taken, I think that would be great!
The news will be trickier unless we pay for a news feed. We'd also have to be very careful about someone providing us with news simply b/c they live in Milan or claim to have a "source" and won't actually name the source. Obviously someone who lives in Milan would be passing along news from the newspapers, TV and so on. Those claiming to have an inside source...well, that's a pain to deal with as well. It happened a number of years ago where we had a member claiming to have a source close to the team (OK, started as a gardener at Mialnello and just grew from there) but the stuff being posted was getting to the point where I forwarded it to Angelo and he was forwarding it to the proper people to check out. IF...I repeat IF we could swing somethign where the team sponsors us in some way, maybe we could actually get news items from them....

did your friend say anything about acmilan-online because all of their news is from other sources.. yeah it would be great to get news and info from them, even if its Nesta's recipe to make his tomato soup or something.. It would just look good for us :devf:
we could say rumour in Italy: but it is tricky, i have a news ticker that we can use otherselves, but at the moment i need to learn a bit more php to link the tickler to the news pages.

I could see doing the bare site route and adding to it--it makes sense to do that if we're going to re-do the entire main site....which is why I'm asking, and would like feedback from alot of people on, WHAT do we want to see on those main pages?
I'm not real sure why Angelo asked specifically about AC Milan-online...unless it's that heading they have about being an authentic AC Milan site. What exactly does that mean?

Index home = some news included, livescore, standings table, next match, links, shameless plugs, picture to say join the forums, how to watch the game quick link, sponsers.. Maybe we could have a thing to show the newest threads on the forum...
History = Information on history of the club, other bits and bobs, maybe drawings or something..
Gallery : this gallery is where members add there pictures, not sure how to actually create this, but there must be ways of getting round it..
Forums * link and update picture, background and colours maybe..
Multimedia : information on how to show games, where sites to see highlights are.. future possibilites of flash games and podcast...
About: well about the site... History, current owners sorta thing..
Then Help, contact, privacy, common soon and sitemap at the top.
I'm wondering if we could keep the index page pretty clean and just that--an index page? A section for links to all the other pages, obviously...and then your shameless plug to join the forums and maybe a shameless plug for contributions, and maybe a thing with next game and maybe standings? And the site map link. Correct me if I'm wrong but literally a site's homepage is just a welcome and an index of what's there? Any thoughts??
We used to have a section in the history of past Milan greats and some bios. Does anyone want to see that back?

I strongly beleive that some people at milan follow MM religiously. These people might be hired professionals to keep up with us fans and address our concerns. They always reply back to the comments we post on this site. Especially when maldini was accused of taking Noel Gallagher's offer seriously only our forum was discussing about it and after a couple of hours acmilan.com released a statement that Maldini doesn't even know who gallagher is. The second instance I noticed was the one regarding Rino where he replied back to the comments about returning back to rangers. Even acmilan-online.com didn't start discussing about it untill Rino came out with another statement on acmilan.com that he is not going to return to rangers. Ours and acmilan-online.com are the only two dedicated forums to Milan. XT never comes up when you google 'AC Milan forums'
Besides, there is no doubt that in terms of quality of posts (most of them) and quick and realistic reactions to situations, MM has got the best members. In fact this is one of the most knowledgeable english forums I have come across. Credit goes to our admins and mods for maintaining discipline and above all keeping this site up. Keep up the goodwork gentlemen and ladies too! :D
:v103: Thank you, Rahul, for the kind words. I'd actually forgotten about those MM "conspiracy theories" about why certain things ended up being addressed on the official site. It is very possible that certain parties that Angelo alerted a couple years ago have kept us on a watch list of some sort. To that end, doing some serious re-designing and improving can only help us!

it has been a while since i did a update, ive been drowning in Uni work for ages, have only recently got over that..
its been soo long that ive worked on the site that ive kind of changed my mind about how to do it..
The idea that i have is to make the site as easy to upgrade and maintain, this is why i think it might be good to have a blogging program like Wordpress to maintain page content.. I will make a layout in photoshop later to give you guys an idea of what i am trying to picture..

im redoing current design, guys what browsers do you mainly use? im trying to settle on IE 6, IE 7, Firefox, and opera. I only ask because there are huge differences between IE 6 (internet explorer) and firefox for example.. IE 7 is different to both of them, which is a pain!
Anyway i had a play today, i got so into doing the site i somehow missed the game... very rare for me..

I saw your note about having issues with IE 7....we're even having issues with it at school, well at least Chuck and I are since we're running Vista. It clashes with the web site that runs our content filter, we just discovered! :ilol:
the simplest way to solve all these problems is to have a plain text site! White background and black text ... no pictures, no colours and all left-aligned :delol:
I bet Vista would still screw it up though :guw:

just a quick bump, i have about a month left of uni so im thinking about working on the site solidly after that. Get the site up and running fully for the start of next season!!!
I just saw your idea Graem, i think your idea is very good, i also agree that we can keep some of the forums that are already in Milanmania. But the colour is the only disadvantage is too bright. I was having in the past ideas about new forums keep working....

Also the same persons that had built that site had create and the official fan club for Milan here at Greece.
The site and the fan club are new and has already 90 members.I'm happy that in Greece we will have our own fan club not only on web.
The forums also looks like MilanMania's(you must be a member to get acces at forums,even as a guest to see how it is) i told them that MilanMania had the ideal forum and i think that they had liked my idea.

I was watching other AC Milan related websites and in one of them there was abt other well known 'AC Milan sites ' on internet. A litle bit description with every site. MM was also mentioned there and in its description it was stated that "a cpuple of years back MM was the BEST (unofficial) AC Milan website on net but now its not like that but its community is still going strong" I just wonder what happened to MM????? :) Most of the links apart from the forum link in the main page are not working :) I am sure members like me who joind MM in the recent years would like to know abt MM dat why it has fallen off from being the best over all website of AC Milan :bri:

I've shown Rez a sample of a free chat I'm familiar with. Once we get the server issue settled, we'll look into chat. Main thing I'm going for is FREE b/c I know usage will be somewhat limited. When we had chat in the past the main usage was during games. Second issue to me is that it can handle quyite a few users and the one I've been using elsewhere has been able to handle 40+ users at once. We'll keep you posted!

One thing that happened to MM a few years ago was the the original creator of the site--Jan, a fan from Denmark-- basically vanished due to problems in his personal life, INCLUDING being in debt to the server he was using to the tune of several thousand dollars. We were lucky to save what we could of the original MM site, which is why alot of the "main page" doesn't work. We've asked for help re-creating those pages, the only person to come forward has been Graeme. I can't re-write all the stuff that was on there. So we're left figuring out what this site should be like. The main portion, and to me the important portion is the forum, and luckily back when a group of us were forced into taking over and finding a new server, we were able to keep the forum pretty much intact.
Also historically we'll get regular users who decide that instead of sticking aorund and helping to solve the real or imagined problem of "poor quality posting", they'd rather jump ship and go someplace else to whine and complain aobut this forum. If you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem, it's as simple as that!
So aside from the....ahem...other answers posted....that's the reason our main page is in the state its in!

I havent forgotten :) My plan is in the next couple of weeks design and make a "working" milanmania site. I would have liked to have done it earlier but with uni stuff its been hard. Like debs said the most difficult thing is to rely on one person to come up with content for the pages, but im up having a go.

I have been here for more than a year so definitely being a proud member and THE BEST PUNDIT of MM :bri: I must know abt the reasons of its slight decline :rollani:

yeah sure, the problem im having atm is that the design i made cannot be directly put into wordpress. I have to build the wordpress site first, then change the design which is a pain. Im trying to find a "webzine" wordpress theme which will allowed us to have a cover story and substories.

ive just been looking over what i did i before and im not a 100% happy with it.
Ive been thinking alot about doing something different than the usual Milan fan page, i get the feeling what i have done is too compact, and will have too much information on the screen. Also the top Flash bar is too much if you consider there needs to be a logo up there too. And i dont think that would look great with the forum.
If you look at http://www.acmilan-online.com/ and http://www.forzamilan.com/ the sites are pretty similar, we could do something slightly different, and something which would completely unique to Milanmania. I was talking with debs about doing some a lil more interactive a while ago. The following are some ideas.

Reza i sort of meant like on a magazine or more like a news site. Where you have the main news article, and have older news as like sticky samples with pictures. There are a couple of templates out there, its just also getting grips with changing the default php code to show what you want.
The following are a couple of webzine blog sites that are quite good. It depends if we do a news section or not, we dont have to have like calcio news like forzamilan and co. We could have pages like ingredients to making a Milan birthday cake or something. Anyway the split magazine site is good for a different type of page layout.

Just a quick update
Reza i downloaded and starting playing with the theme. I have created a basic CSS frame, and started to place php code into and to get the thing working.
I have hit a wall, well that theme doesnt have many function support, like bring up most recent posts, and its being bit of a headache. Ive used some plugins, but they are not bringing up what i want.
What i will end up doing is cut the css cheat (that makes the feature post different) and also cut the php code that brings up/. Il have a play next couple of days, and hopefully have some screen shots or something.
Thanx Graeme, there might be other themes like it with better support for plugins, I'll look again while you are working on this one.

quick update
i found out the other day that the theme i am waiting on wont be out until the end of this month. Moral of this story is although it sounds a bit ironic people shouldnt promise things like unrealistic release dates, and big name signings if they cant deliver :5ok:

On a serious note, maybe one of those verification checks can be added to the registration process so it'll stop bots coming in.

I'm not sure what is meant by transferable pictures, but if you mean pictures people can copy and save in their own files, I think we would run into copyright issues. We can't just steal team pictures from the official site without permission. If this is not what is meant, please explain...

Good news everyone!! i have been working on the site the last couple of days and i hope to have something to show on www.graemechidgey.com by the end of the week. Ignore the subject topics, im using my own site to test the page on. When i get home from work il make a list on here of features people want. if you would like something dont be affraid to ask.
One thing i have noticed is that the spammers were hard at work this morning. Maybe we could do something about that.

Tell me how to stop spammers before they even register here, please. The mods and I get rid of the stuff as fast as we can. I banned 3 spammers already today, but if you know how to stop them, I'm all ears! Should we add captcha code for people who are registering? Or even for posting replies, like the option available at myspace?

Yeah captcha on registry is prob best bet, it might start to put people off posting if they keep having to do it for every post. But we can see how things go!

Well I have signed up on other forums and they used something else with the image string (if thats what your talking about). Maybe we could ask a pretty simple question with the image string and they should get both correct in order for the registration to be complete.
An example of the question could be something like Who is the captain of Milan? or The longest serving player? Something simple but should separate the bots from humans.
That should work really well, good idea

It seems like this is going to be a big job, especially since you must re-do it now. Do you know, when the new website you are creating will be up and running.
