As we have back to back matches against Anderlecht it makes sense to create one thread for both games.

With over 2 weeks until the match it'll give us as fans plenty of time to research Anderlecht and familiarise ourselves with their players and their form. As we have a few Belgium members, they will hopefully be able to provide us with some first-hand info on our CL opponents.

Anderlecht have played 7 games in the Jupiler league so far and are unbeaten with 5 wins, 2 draws and are joint top on 17 points.

With few familiar names (Mpenza, Borre & Van Damme probably the most well known), we'll be relying on our Belgium pals to enlighten us on who the dangermen are.

Naturally it's far too early to start talking about line-ups, much can change for us over the international break and beyond. But what we can obviously deduce is that we need at least 4, if not 6 points from these matches. Gaining either amount would leaves us with little or no work to do to secure qualification and lift some pressure off of the team.

1st place is ours for the taking!

Anyone can tell us more about Borre? He seems to be a great young prospect. I have never seen him play but have heard and read that he has a potential of a great defender.

Milan will win this

I think that Anderlecht would be a tough opponent to Milan....I am sure that Milan would win all the rest of the matches, 2 times vs Anderlecht, 1 with AEK and Lille respectively... Milan's points would be a maximum of 18 points...I'll bet on this...

How could Milan's points be at 18? We already lost 2 at Lille. :tong: You probably will lose your bet. :coffee:

I saw Anderlecht play twice last season. They have changed the team quite a bit since then with players leaving and new players coming in the squad, so my contribution will be necessarily limited on this subject. I thought Vd Borre was noticably faster that the other players they had on the pitch those two days. Sometimes he didn't seem to know what to do with the ball when he got it but one can chalk that up to his being a young player. I didn't see him playing too much defense, though. That might be due to the weakness of the opposition in one match and the toughness in the other, or maybe he will just end up being a midfielder as time progresses. This year, I understand their young players are playing more and that Lucas Biglia is the player to watch out for. Or so I have read. I'll try and find out more or to goad some Anderlecht fans into posting here, because really I cannot say much more.

Hi Xudong,

At this moment our point is 4 (3 from AEK and 1 from Lille)
What I meant is that we will be having another 4 matches and if we win them all then we will get additional 4x3 = 12 points + 4 points = ..ooopppsss...... you are right a maximum of 16 points and NOT 18 as what I've said before...

Thanks Xudong to wake me up from my wishful dream or better say that I'm growing older and older to loose somemore memory..he3x

In anyway I think that Milan will be the top of the group.....that I will bet my money on...

I have managed to get the educated opinion of a real live die-hard Anderlecht fan (my friend Geert, who really does support them, which is probably not good for his health, which is touchy anyway ;)), so here goes:

My nick doesn't work at MM so I'll post it here (copy paste it if you want):

Anderlecht plays in a 4-3-3, sort of like Milan. We have a completely different squad than last year soo the comparison with the team that did soo poorly the previous two years is wrong. Still, not all compartments of the team have improved.

In defence Hanu Tihinen (to Zurich, don't ask me why) and Vincent Kompany (Hamburg SV) have left and it shows. Nicolas Pareja is ok, but Jelle Vandamme is a liability. The main problem is that neither of them can give a pass over 5 meters without losing it. A litte pressure on the central defenders can kill us. On the right-back position Anthony Vanden Borre seems to have made a lot of progress. The guy is a central midfielder, so last year he had a lot of problems with his positioning. He has come a long way, but he still lacks concentration and in a one on one situation, the attacker will dribble him a bit too easily.

Midfield has improved dramatically. There still are the geriatric patients called Yves Vanderhaeghe and Bart Goor, who are utter sh!te, but Lukas Biiglia is a delight to watch. Those who've seen our friendly game at Real Madrid can agree. Some ask why he has come to Anderlecht. Well there is a simple answer. Because he is smart. How many South American talents haven't come to Europe to immediately join a top team. They never have the time to adapt to a different style of football and ruin their career. On top of that Biglia is a good friend of Argentinean striker Nicolas Frutos. That has probably helped him decide to join Anderlecht.
Biglia is a great player, but he still isn't dominant enough if you ask me. I sometimes have the impression that he only rules the midfield in top games.

Apart from Biiglia, watch out for Mbark Boussoufa. The Dutchman is the creative spark in the team. The Dutchman/Moroccan is a great dribbler and superb passer. He will hurt Milan. Boussoufa will get the help of Nicolas Frutos. Frutos is the tall striker up front. He is the Jan Koller type: tall, very good with his back towards the goal and someone who scores easily.

So we do have a lot more quality than the years before. Still, this is a team that needs time to be formed. Anderlecht is far from playing at its full potential. Therefore, it's hard to predict anything. At home I think we will do fine. At San Siro, I fear the worst. Also because our coach thinks that playing defensively will win us a point, whereas in fact it will just put a lot of pressure on our weakest compartment: the defence.

I live in Holland and they sometimes show some matches from the Belgium competition here.
We should'nt be too worried about them, their defense and midfield are solid but have their weak points.
We should watch out for their stiker, Tchite.

I have my ticket for the match. Anderlecht is probably the third team I hate most right after Juventus and Inter. In fact Anderlecht is the belgian Juventus, enough said. We must win or I'll die of rage, best part is that since I'm belgian I had to buy a ticket for the Anderlecht reserved seats, they refused to sell me a ticket for the Milan stands. I'll take my Sony and take some shots lol.

Their most dangerous player is Tchité, he's fast as Suazo, and then there's Frutos, he's not fast but he's tall and packs some punch especialy in the headers. Goor is an experienced veteran and he has some tricks upon his sleeve, like fouling when the ref doesn't see it, fast free kicks, provoking ect...

Their weak point is the right back position and the central midfield, I think they'll have the most trouble with Kaka and Pirlo. We must win this guys, 90% of my neighbourhoud are Anderlecht supporters, I can't show my face on the street no more if we lose this lol.

P.S : last two times I saw Milan live we lost twice (both matches at PSV), time to turn it around, or should I stay at home? ROFL

SQUAD FOR ANDERLECHT
10/15/2006
GOALKEEPERS: Dida, Fiori, Kalac
DEFENDERS: Bonera, Cafu, Costacurta, Kaladze, Maldini, Nesta, Jankulovski, Simic
MIDFIELDERS: Brocchi, Gattuso, Kakà, Pirlo, Seedorf
STRIKERS: Gilardino, Inzaghi, Ricardo Oliveira, Guerci (n°28)

Who is this Guerci character..?

Jim_UK
15-10-2006, 14:55
when you look at the list of defenders and take into account we don't have Serginho or Favalli on that list, you can see we have far too many. I'd swap one of our defenders for another midfielder any day.

My line up would be:

Dida, Cafu, Nesta, Maldini, Kaladze, Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf, Kaka, Oliveira, Inzaghi

Whoever this Guerci is Mystik, lets hope he has pace!

no Gourcuff..... :( I dont care about the result as we will qualify in the end. All I want is to see us play fast football, if that is possible with this team. I want to see trained combinations, played with our eyes closed. Pirlo-Seedorf-Gattuso-Kaka are playing together for ages and still we cant dominate in the middle like we should do. And let Bonera play this one!

I know that Guerci(o) means cross-eyed in the Italian dialect my grandmother used to speak, so I hope that is not a bad omen. ;)

Anyway, I hope Milan can get over their lack of goal scoring for these next two matches, because I can rub it in for a year (or longer) should they crush the team in purple. :D

About Anderlecht :

of course they are no AC Milan, but we will have to take care.
Their weakest link is the defense. Even in the Belgian competition they have problems with their defense (they lost at home with 1-4 against Genk). VD Borre is a good, young player, with great technical skills but his defensive skills must improve. And since he's a right wing back, defensive skills are important ... I think he can have problems with an upcoming Jankulovski.
In midfield, Anderlecht has some great technical players. And their 2 central midf can be compared with Gattuso - Pirlo. Yves Vanderhaeghe can be compared with Gattuso : he takes a lot of balls in the midfield, but his passing is not that accurate. Next to him plays Lucas Biglia, a kind of playmaker just before the defense (just like Pirlo). He is on technical skills maybe the best Anderlecht-player. Bart Goor is a player some of you will probably know. He's Belgian international for a long time and played for Hertha Berlin and Feyenoord. He's a left winger who strikes easily.
Other midfielders are Dutch/Maroccan Bousouffa and Egyptian Hassan, 2 players with good technical skills.
Their strikers are the small, fast player Tchité, a man who easily strikes and Frutos, a Jan Koller-type who also finds the goal easily.
So, Anderlecht is a young team with great technical skills but with a very shaky defense. And their lack of experience (one of the youngest teams in the CL) can be harmfull for them.

Kaka
Inzaghi---Oliveira

Just heard some great news that the match is going to be on one of the dutch channels.
So i can see the game tonight.
22 Kaka your right, Seedorf is always very kind to other players and fans.
I think he's in great form and the speculations are going to he'll finally be selected by Van Basten in the Dutch international squad.
The match tonight, it will be a hard match because Anderlecht are playing at home and won't be only defending to keep the points home.
I think we should play with 3 strikers to score as soon as possible since they have some defenders that are injured and their defense is their weakest part.

surpririsngly I have different opinions from you guys; I think Milan played OK... in the middle of first half the passing was awful; but overall the defense is solid so far.

Bonera didn't impress me either.

Pippo has to do better... and Milan has to be faster. Seedorf is a nightmare... unforutnately.

zlatanov
17-10-2006, 15:37
I think we could afford putting cafu in to give us more bite on the right ... and Anderlech aren't exactly wizzards in attack, so that shouldn't create any problems in defense.

Pippo just missed another good opportunity ... with a little more concentration he could have scored at least a couple of goals this 1st half.

Not really sure why so many complaints from our play - OK, we aren't exactly making fans fall in love with our play but we control the game even when playing not that close to our best. We have had a number of pretty good chances to score but the players, and Pippo above all, have been wasting them at least for now.

How we are playing?. We are bad?.

Exactly the same against Ascoli, Samp, Lille, Siena and Livorno. If you thought we were good in all those games, then you will be happy with our performance.

Nothing has changed since those games, and our attack is still struggling although we are creating chances. We are keeping the ball alot which is good, but we need more shots on goal from midfield. Wow what is wrong with this team, they are full of superstars but continue to play this average football. Bonera is a total moron and we should never start him again.

one, two, even three draws would maybe be acceptable, but four, with the tension towards fifth game in a row without a win, would really require a major changes. it wouldn't be that bad if we were facing a tough competition, but look at the opponnets! ascoli, siena, lille, samp, anderlecht !

Our transfer campaign was alrite. gorcuff i think has the potential to be great, you can tell just by lookin at him play. olivera has the potential to be like amoroso was for parma a few years ago, but we clearly overpaid for him. i wouldn't class our transfers in the summer as 'alright' martin. Favalli, Bonera & Oliveira have all be wastes of space. Why not get Italians who want to prove themselves, ones on the up instead of on the way down? Plus we all know we only bought Oliveira to try and get Ronaldinho, he's not lived up to his billing yet has he? He's been poor.

its not alrite for milan especially since we have lost sheva, but u cannot say it was utter garbage. look at wut we unearthed with gorcuff, for like 3 mill we got a new "kaka". favalli has done wut he was signed to do, no1 ever expected him to be good or great, he wuz picked up for free to warm the bench. Favalli is simply experienced insurance in case our young defense comprised of maldini, costacurta, janku and kaladze who have come of injuries in the last 2 years ever surprisingly get injured again. whats the point of bringing in a talented young italian to be the insurance guy and sit on the bench. The reason some of these young players shine is bcasue they get alot of playin time in their teams, remember the young and promising gilardino/borrielo? i understadn what u are sayin but there is no point of blaming anything on favalli, he is just a bench warmer. Gorcuff is the closest thing to the kaka we saw in the first milan season, adn we can both agree we paid close to nothing for that sort of talent. Oliveira also has some sort of pedigree, 23 goals in la liga. Im not defending his recent performances, simply saying that he has the potential to be great as the season progresses.

full-time thank god. Now its time to concentrate on what went wrong and what is going on with this time. We have been playing bad for the last 6 games. We've won 2, and drawn 4, scoring 3 goals, 2 from defenders and 1 from a midfielder.

After going down to 10 men today I saw the team finally started playing well. IMHO, I think the problem is in the mentality of the players, they need to be given better speeches and be put into the game more. They need to be concentrated at all times and not only when our backs are against the ropes.

Boy I remember how much I didnt want RvN here, but now I cant believe how stupid we were to reject him. Look at him at Real!

Bad bad game... its been a while since i watched the game last time, but i was really dissapointed after first half. Disastrous play, wtf's wrong with passing, is that so hard? Seedorf himself lost dozen of balls, he couldnt even get a single 1-2 pass with Janku on the flank right. Lost of passes just somewhere forward, too strong passes, bad receiving and control... i was really pissed of. We sure had chances, but most of them from kicking the ball into box and let Pippo do what he can. We had some luck with the ref calls... What was bonera thinking? Again, no forwards scoring

The only good thing is result. And Dida - which ironically still didnt sign contract. Damn how am I in the bad mood now, i hope u people could see some positives from this game, cheer me up please!

Well the positives are that we won with 10 men away, which will mean really alot for the players. Another positive is that Carlo finally understood that Gila must not start, and hopefully he'll understand after this game that Bonera musnt play unless he's forced to.

We also desperately need an attacking midfielder to sub Kaka/Seedorf off. Gourcuff could sub both I know, but we will still need another player who can do that.

Jim_UK
17-10-2006, 16:52
I think we miss Serginho more than anyone, i wish he wasn't injured!

I said it earlier, but we only have 7 true midfielders!

Seedorf, Pirlo, Gattuso, Gourcuff, Brocchi, Ambrosini, Kaka. You could argue that Serginho & Jankulovski can make up the numbers, but they're primarily used as left-backs so i don't think they count. How can you go through a season with just 7 real midfielders?! It's something that needs addressing, especially as we have about 10 defenders!

rahul.acm
17-10-2006, 16:52
We can't really blame Gila for a bad performance as he did not have alot of time as well as the role of KAKA dimished after our great hero Bonera was sent off. I want to hear what Ancelotti has to say about Bonera, he was very pissed because of him.

Exactly, crespo had seria A experience, and would have settled with us quickly... Oliviera was useless tonight, i would have prefered Gila to start.. Oliveira's shot on goal was predictable, he could have passed the ball or shot along the goaline hoping inzaghi or kaka would get a toe onto it.... think of it like this, we sold a ferrari and bought a ford focus (was gona say mule) to replace him...

agreed! but y are u surprised? hasnt this alwais been the story with milan, alwais perform in last minutes with their backs against the wall. history keeps repeating. back against the wall with lyon last year, we came through. back against the wall with psv wen we last won the cl, jdt came through in the last minute. this has happened many times, even this season. backs against the wall wen we were -8, we came through winning our first three games and going onto positives. we clearly lack motivation and get too comfortable. remember deportivo, we thought we won, we lost. remember liverpool, same story. remember the begining of the season? the scudetto seemed within reach once we got out of the whole, only to dig up a bigger whole with all these ties. our players are onli stimulated to perform when the odds are against em.

Carlo Ancelotti admits Milan’s problems have been psychological, as Daniele Bonera’s red card was the wake-up call they needed.

“We wanted to win this match and get back on track after so many draws, but we picked the toughest manner to achieve that,” commented the Coach.

The Rossoneri were heading for their fifth consecutive draw in all competitions before Bonera’s dismissal seemed to spark them into life, going on to win 1-0 away to Anderlecht.

“It wasn’t a good first half from us and we were a little timid, giving the ball away too much. The moment we thought it was getting really tough, that’s when the team woke up and we did well to win.

“The team spirit has always been present and that has been consistent over the past few years. There will be other tests and we really must improve upfront, but it was good to see the side react to setbacks with such confidence.”

The recent poor form can be attributed to a slow tempo and Ancelotti again urged his players to shake themselves up.

“We struggle in midfield and tend to go too slowly, as everyone wants the ball to feet and don’t attack the space as well as they should. Today we had a few players not 100 per cent fit and will work on pace and precision during training.

“It’s tough to say where confidence comes from, but at times simple things don’t work and you get irritated. I believe we’re troubled by this frenzy to score and that makes it more difficult for us, as it seems to affect the players negatively.”

Milan might’ve struggled more after the red card, but instead they took control and created many more chances after going down to 10 men.

“Undoubtedly Bonera’s dismissal was an important wake-up call forcing everyone to focus and step up their game. It also opened up Anderlecht, who felt safer and therefore left us more room for manoeuvre.”

This was similar to the 1-0 victory at Club Brugge last season, also in Belgium, where a Kaka screamer rescued the result despite an early red card.

“It’s true that it’s always tough to play in 10 men, but at the same time when Anderlecht thought they had more of a chance to win, they pushed forward and gave Kaka more space in midfield. I don’t want to limit him to any particular position, as he must be left free to follow his inspiration.”

Some are calling Kaka a leader for the San Siro giants, especially now that Andriy Shevchenko has moved on, but Ancelotti insisted these labels don’t exist in his team.

“He still has a long way to go before becoming a leader, but I am fortunate to have many great champions in this side. It’s a bit premature as he’s been here for three years, but he is young and will become a Rossoneri legend. We’ll hang on to him for the rest of his career, as he is a professional and has great quality.”

With Serginho injured, the Coach opted for Marek Jankulovski at left-back and Bonera on the right, but the crosses from that flank only came in after Marcos Cafu’s introduction.

“Jankulovski was fantastic tonight. He pushed forward a lot and I had told Bonera to be a bit more defensive because of Moussoufa, who was their most dangerous player.”

Milan now lead Group H on seven points and are yet to concede a goal, while Lille follow on five after their 3-1 victory over AEK Athens.

Thought Pirlo also had a good game, but not a spectacular one...made a great clearance for us...coming off the flu(?) I think...so, he played well for me, seeing as match fitness could have been a problem for him.

The good thing for me, is that we can only improve after this performance. :dumpf:

Possibly, but hes the one Milan player I always expect to play well simply because he almost always does.

Well, nothing too special I think, just a routine win, we've been missing that. I don't think Pirlo was needed for this game, but whatever.

Just a note, the whole of last season when Carlo dindt play Pirlo, Seedorf played in his position and Serginho was at the left. It seems unusual for Carlo to play Brocci at Pirlo's place now. One could argue that it's about playing Seedorf at his natural position, but I feel it would be better to play Brocci at CM/L and put Seedorf in Pirlo's place when we're missing Pirlo.

Seedorf played well tonight. Bonera is a savage :) Nice sending off Daniele:)

seedorf simply needs to be benched, but unfortunately gourcuff is injured and we have no other class CM to play that role. Pirlo needs more movement around him to play his game. I kind of feel sorry for KAka' as he plays alone! Galliani should pay him 10 times more :)

New RB, new CM, and a class forward and we will not play good football untill this happens. mark my words.

Saw the game. This is what i thought:

1) Contrary to what most are saying, I thought we played an outstanding game, even in the first half---especially compared to recent games. The tempo was high throughout, we pushed forward aggressively, used the flanks, tested their keeper. What more can you ask for? The only thing missing was the goal, which fortunately came in the second half through Kaka.

2) Excuse the pun, but the Bonera sending off was extremely bone headed. He was on a yellow card, everyone knew the reputation of this referee as being card happy (ask David Beckham), it was just stupid. On the flip side, when Cafu came on, we realized what we were missing. He added a different dimension down the right flank. Which makes me realize that til today, we dont have a quality replacement for him down the flank. Bonera is NOT a right back and doesn look like he will ever be. We need a pacy, young right back and FAST!!!

3) Janku had an awesome game. Great crosses into the box, great running. He is starting to look more and more like the Janku of Udinese.

4) Oliveira has been disappointing. I dont care what anyone says, he was brought in to replace Sheva, and he's not doing the job. He disappears out of games, does not drop back for the ball, doesnt seem to be doing much with it and looks pretty sleepy to be honest!! We need a top quality striker. How many times have I said it.

5) So, all in all, good game, great result. Hopefully, we continue to play like this. Hope Inzaghi does not get injured, hope RO starts playing football, and Gila starts scoring.

Have you seriously only just realised this? Most have been calling for a right-back like you describe for a few seasons now, either as a replacement for Cafu or back up to Cafu.

guys guys...first we all complaine that we keep drawing games .....and then when we win one..we call its "soutine win" or we didnt "play well enough" i mean come on ....if you look at individual performances it was much better then all the draws we had...i mean right off the bat we were attacking from the right flank using janku..and tested their keeper..and defence did a marvelous even with maldini out..imean dida was probably tested like twice or three times throughout the game..all in all...this is just the beginning of many new brogther things to come..and did u guys seee how close inaghi got i mean he sets the tone for us...he applies preassure early on and then everyone can contribute and kaka...i dont need to say anything about him but it was a terrific and well deserved game for us

I watched the game and I'm not very impressed. The only positive thing is the result. Quite an average game. If we want to archieve this season, we gotta improve a lot.
Dida - excelent game, in the first half wasn't tested at all thanks to our defence, but in the second half he saved the victory - 7
Bonera - its clear that he's not a real RB, out of position, Bousoffa (spell??) made the game very difficult for him. Doubtful first yellow card, the second one was just stupid - 4.5 :5milan:
Nesta - a solid game, some very good tackles, pure class - 6.5
Kaladze - same as Nesta, even better than him, too bad for the yellow card, he didn't deserve it - 6.5 :5ok:
Jankulovski - quite good game, with 2 very good crossesfor Pippo in the first half, but I'm sure Marek could do much better - 6
Gattuso - Our captain made his usual game - 6 :swars:
Pirlo - his fitness condition is not OK, but he played not bad, no doubt he can do much much better - 6
Seedorf - tried to be active in the first half, but made a lot of mistakes with the passes, at least 2 of 3 were wrong, very low efficientcy, didn't improve a lot in the second half, looked tired - 5.5 :rollani:
Kaka - the baddest first half ever, he touched the ball 5-6 times or something. Totally out of the game (except one combination with Pippo...). In the second half he changed his yellow shoes with white ones, Bonera was sent off and Kaka woke up. Quite good second half. - 6.5
Ricardo Oliveira - its clear that his fitness condition is very bad, he lacks power and speed. But this guy has potential, tried to be useful. Got subtituted after Bonera's red card - 5.5 :pp18:
Pippo Inzaghi - he was very dangerous in the first half and definatelly unlucky not to score, he had at least 4-5 chances to score. In the second half got tired - 6.5 :gun:

Cafu - After the senting off of Bonera, he subst-ed RO and changed the game, thanks to him we didn't feel that we played the whole second half with 10 man, pure class - 6.5 :star:
Gilardino - entered on Pippo's place. Unfortunatelly for him, he had only 1 opportunity and he missed it, after that we got back to defend the result and was left alone to fight for the ball against the Anderlecht's defenders - 5 :u31:
Brocchi - took Seedorf's place in he last minutes, won some balls, not bad performance for couple of minutes - 6

Cafu got alot of credit even from the commentators, that he did better than Bonera. But he also got much easier conditions, as Anderlecht after the suspension of Bonera thought they could play football with Milan as opponent.
The midfielders and also both full backs got a LOT of space because of that. Had Anderlecht just as before the suspension defended with 11 players, Cafu would have been just as bad as Bonera, because he also a not able to drible and are not pacey enough as Serginho.

Bonera did it ok in the defense, but I still doubt that this was the best buy as there where other and better options(Gallas/Oddo)

In the first half Milan played sh*t. But seems to me, that when Bonera got a red card Milan woke up and in 10 men played a lot better then in 11. Although I think that we played not in 10 men, but in 9 men, coz Gila as usual didnt help. Stupid substitution...
Dida played very good, Janculovski was great, Kaka activated only in the second half and scored a wonderfull goal!!! Oliveira played well, Inzaghi missed a lot of chances. All the rest were either sleeping or playing aggressively.
We cannot continue playing like this...

Spartak are just too weak away from home to do anything vs even an average team, so I wouldn't expect anything from them. They will be a much tougher opponent in the next game in Moskow though.
I would expect this win, if Inter wins that is, to give them a false sense of security once again and they will probably mess it up in the next game, so ... give it time and you won't be disappointed :tong:

He is very fast and skillfull...thats what i thought about him. He seems like a good player.

About Spartak, I couldnt care less (I support Zenit Saint-Petersburg), but its a pity that they lost, although I didnt expect much from them. CSK is doing great, considering the hard group they got into. So overall rating of Russia will go up anyways I guess if CSK continues like that.

I was just wondering if it wouldn't be better to open a new thread for this game as the first one took 16 pages ... it would be kind of difficult for posters to go and read through 30+ pages most of them not knowing which post for which game is.
If someone wants to have the glory, go ahead and open a new thread :)

it would be difficult to find where the posts for one game end and the posts for the other start. Anyone who wnats to read the posts for game 2 from the beginning will have to look through 5-10 pages to figure that out.
