View Full Version : Milan vs. Celtic - 2nd Leg, round of 16
After the 0-0 tie in Scotland, now back to San Siro.
Milan must win the game...
any tie (besides the 0-0) is good enough for Celtic to advance because of the away goal...
I predict a 3-1 win, with two goals coming from Kaka', one of them being a penalty kick. :D

... one of them being a penalty kick. :D
whatever you've done, I don't wanna know about it :D
If Milan come out focused and determined, and I don't see a reason for them not to do so, I think the win will be ours ... we just need to take our time and not rush things 'cause this could elad to mistakes at the back, which could cost us.
Other than that, the dif in quality between the two teams is a bit too big, so all we need to do is match them for determination i.e. grinta.

----------Dida-------------
Oddo Kaladze Maldini JAnku
---------Pirlo-----------
Rinho-------------Ambro--
-------Kaka Seedorf-----
---------Gila------------
We have to play both ambro and rinho that day to make sure we dont concide and with both Kaka and Seedorf we will score eventually,,the most important thing is not to concide early... that would be terrible... Kaladze must play instead of Bonera,as his better in the air...and ambro too can help stop Venegor..
if pippo is healthy, he needs to play regardless!!!!!!!!!!!!
gila sucks, it is going to be a tough game

So, I guess that means a full stadium for the game vs Celtic :)

Good stuff........Even more chance of a ticket for us coming from Glasgow.
Hope the ones who came over for the game enjoyed themselves.
The ones i spoke to seemed to have good time bar the score.
P,s how good is kaka...........I've never seen anyone make so much space in my whole life, the boy is class!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hey merlin, a question about Celtic and please excuse my ignorance... is there a specific reason why the jersey is in green/white horizontal stripes?

I've been told that our first kit was white top and black shorts, we then changed green and white stipes, as a mark of respect to our irish heritage,
But striped football strips were comman at the time and the club wanted us to stand out from all the rest and at the time no club had the hooped top.
Now maybe you can help me, i'm flying into Milan on Tueday night,
Whats the best form of transport from Malpensa Airport to the town centre and how much does it cost. Also is there any part of Milan that we should stay clear from( i.e Bad parts of town where there may be trouble)
Any other information that might be relevent would be nice.

Well, the easiest is to just take a TAXI, but that's gonna be expensive... let's say 50-70 Euros... probably as much as your flight... I'd say you only consider this if you have the money, the urgency to get to your destination, or in case you arrive very late at night, or with bad weather...
What I would do, is:
TAKE A SHUTTLE! They go from Malpensa to Stazione Centrale... there's always one about to depart... and it costs like 5 Euros... if you don't know your way around town to find your hotel or where you're staying, just go to Stazione Centrale and from there take the Metropolitana (subway)...
the nearest stop to San Siro is "fermata LOTTO"...
the TRAM can also take you all the way into the parking lot of the stadium, right Biglietteria Sud (South box office)

From theGuardian website:
http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,,2024649,00.html
The prospects of a team qualifying for the next round, naturally enough, are influenced by the result they recorded in the first leg. Consider these figures from two-legged European ties played in the major competitions - the Champions League, Uefa Cup and the now defunct Cup-Winners' Cup - in the last 20 completed seasons. Of all the teams who lost by one goal away from home in the first leg, only 44% qualified for the next round - so Arsenal beware. Of all the teams who drew away from home in the first leg, 72% qualified for the next round. Of all the teams who won by one goal away from home in the first leg, 91% qualified for the next round.
This is certainly reassuring! :D
Now, where can I place my bet :D
Of all the teams who drew away from home in the first leg, 72% qualified for the next round.
And when Milan ( in last 20 years) is concerned, the percentage is even higher.
See this, it's almost unbelievable :
Champions League
When Milan drew the first leg, they ALWAYS won the second leg
1993 - Aarau 0:0 - 1:0
1995 - Benfika 0:0 - 2:0
2003 - Ajax 0:0 - 3:2
2004 - Sparta 0:0 - 4:1
2006- Bayern 1:1 - 4:1
2006 - Lyon 0:0 - 3:1
Champions Cup
When Milan drew the first leg, they didn't qualify for the next round only once
1988 - Red Star 1:1 - 1:1 pen :4-2
1989- Werder 0:0 - 1:0
1989 - Real Madrid 1:1 - 5:0
1990 - Mechelen 0:0 - 2:0
1991- Club Brugge 0:0 - 1:0
1991 - Marselle 1:1 - 0:3
UEFA Cup
2001 - Sporting 1:1 - 2:0
Cup Winners Cup
/
Total : In last 20 years Milan drew in the first leg 13 times, and they qualifyed in the next round 12/13 times , or 92%.
Now you can place your bet Warro :grinser:

You guys bet all you want, im not betting one dime on this. If we have strikers like Gilardino to depend on then we are in real trouble my friends. Here's some stats for you, in the last 20 years, we never had to play with a lone striker as bad as Gilardino. I dont think we ever had a striker with only 1 goal in CL out of (i think) 10 games now?
Forza Milan, just lets not get complacent.
Does anyone know why Gourcuff didnt even make the bench against Chievo? Any chance he's being saved for the Celtic game? I have a feeling we will see Pippo-Oliveira up front.

I agree that we're lacking that cutting-edge up front, but remember that goals don't have to come from strikers only. If Kaka-Pirlo are on their game like in Glasgow, then we have a good chance of going through. I say Oddo and Janku should fancy their chances and go for goal.
Complacent? Aye, that happens. I think most of us know what serious contenders Celtic are and we're just trying to be positive is all man. :5ok:

Hello folks, first post for me although I've been reading for a while now.
I think that a positive result for us on Wednesday lies squarely on how we play. If we play as we know that we can then we'll be far too strong for Celtic.
Much has been made here of Nakamura's free kick ability in the Scottish media. This is more in hope than expectation.
Celtic are sorely lacking in the striking and centre back positions. Wednesday is all about Milan and how we play and I fimly believe that if the real Milan turns up then we'll take the tie by two clear goals.

Starsports and ESPN as well as RCTI (local TV) here in Indonesia will show only MU and Arsenal??
While Milan - Celtic will be shown as recorded game on Friday morning 01.00 am..... :stupid:
But.......I have my confidence that Milan will at least win 3-1 if not 3-0 !!!!!
I will bet for Milan no matter which striker/s will be on the field against Celtic...Gila + Pippo or Gila + Oli or even Gila alone would not change my mind to bet on Milan :5ok: :5ok: :5ok:

Only way we can lose is by gettin complacent, and then we will be looking for any excuses to blame the ref. We should not put ourselves in a situation where the ref will decide the game, we need to score a lot of goals and not defend a 1-0 lead like always. (btw, Markus Mayr (the ref of Barca-Milan last yr) is goin to be the assistant ref tomorrow)
Im sure Maldini was preparing himself for this match and he will lead our defence alongside Bonera.... My prediction.....
.................dida................
oddo...bonera...maldini..marek
..............pirlo...........
..gattuso......ambrosini........
....kaka'.........seedorf.....
............pippo........
I think this will be it, aldough I would like to see Seedorf in Ambro's place and Gourcuff with Kaka'.
MILANELLO - Ecco l'elenco ufficiale. PORTIERI: Dida, Kalac, Storari. DIFENSORI: Cafu, Maldini, Costacurta, Simic, Jankulovski, Favalli, Bonera, Oddo. CENTROCAMPISTI: Gattuso, Seedorf, Gourcuff, Pirlo, Kaką, Ambrosini, Brocchi. ATTACCANTI: Ricardo Oliveira, Inzaghi, Gilardino.

Its GAME DAY fellow fans. Are we ready??? Is Gourcuff or Seedorf gonnna play? Is it gonna be Pippo/Oliveira upfront? Or will he rely on Gila as usual?? Will Kaka play like how he did before the X-mas break or will he continue with this below average form? Will Dida gift them 1 goal or 2? Is this going to be our captain's last game in the CL after 22 years playing in it?

Inter meanwhile, could possibly face expulsion (doubt it personally) over the fracas that took place after the match.
That would mean we could still finish 5th, and because they are out, still get into Europe...but UEFA wont sanction them so severly in my estimation...so we better get that 4th spot!

That would mean we could still finish 5th, and because they are out, still get into Europe...but UEFA wont sanction them so severely in my estimation...so we better get that 4th spot!
I also doubt that the sanctions would be so severe also because there are conflicting reports regarding who started what and who didn't.
On the other hand, however, Inter players did actively participate in the brawl that continued for 15-20 min and what happened on the field is only part of the story given that there was some action in the dressing rooms too.
And keeping in mind that inter have just recently had problems with UEFA sanctions (the Milan derby debacle of 2 years ago), I guess they should be worried about their situation for next year's CL.
Inter meanwhile, could possibly face expulsion (doubt it personally) over the fracas that took place after the match.
And they really must be punished for this with an expulsion.
Their fans stopped a CL 1/4 match against Milan 2 years ago. Their officials ( Faschetti) talked to UEFA officials asking for refs on Inter matches ( or smthg like that) , and their players started a shemeful fight yesterday.
It's always Inter whenever there's a scandal in CL.
We can't just punish them by making them play on empty stadium or by suspending some of their players on 2-3 matches, because it seems like they never learn, they don't care about the warnings they get from UEFA and they continue doing whatever they want.
If it was some eastern European team, i'm 100% sure UEFA would have given few years expulsion from every competition to the entire country, not only to the team.
Platini has to show guts and punish them for what they did, with at least 1 year suspension from european football.
I'm really not saying this as a Juve fan or as Anti-Inter. Juve won't play CL next year so Inter won't be our rivals anyway, and even if they play i know they won't win it. Even more, they will concentrate on the legue and it will be twice harder for Juve to win Serie A.
This time i'm saying it as a football fan - Inter out of Europe for at least 1 year is a must !

If we lose to Celtic tonight i dont care our team has done us proud already qualifying so far on such a striker less side and making up the 8 point deficit as long as we hit that 4th place spot in the league and qualify next season does it really matter because whtas the chances of us actually winning it with Liverpool and Chelski been left in the draw? i dont want to bring the place down with doom and gloom but i Believe we can do this but look at Lyon Last season how close did we take that and we have no Sheva now we really need Gila to be sharper to try and knock at least one in for us? also is Kaka playing we need him to be given a bit of space to move in.

I wouldn't be too harsh on Milan if we fail to leave a more memorable trace in this year's CL given all the problems we've had with penalties, lack of transfers and injuries that have been depleting the team all season long.
But I must say that the more this CL progresses, the more I start thinking that our chances of reaching the final are getting better and better given that none of the teams left in it show the consistency in class that is necessary to be considered a clear favourite ... at the same time we seem to have finally found some consistency in our play and the return from injuries of players like Nesta, Serginho, and Ambro would make things a little easier for the team.
With teams like Lyon, Barca, Inter and one of Bayern and Real out for sure, and a severely under-performing Chelsea team (given the star-squad they have), and the poor form of big teams like real M and Bayern, and the not-so-frightening form of ManU, and the unpredictability (read inconsistency) of Liverpool, Valencia, Arsenal, and PSV, all of whom can beat anyone but more often can lose to anyone too ... I guess Roma is the most dangerous team of them all, I think.
Roma are pretty safe for 2nd place in Serie A and will be able to fully concentrate on the CL ... and this is when Roma is dangerous - while they may not have a squad deep enough for fighting on two fronts or a long-lasting competition like Serie A, their starting 11 isn't inferior to anyone out there and when they devote their efforts on CL alone, they will mean trouble.

well, of course everything I said above concerns Milan only if we manage to go thru to the next round. I personally think that milan will give it their all and then some to qualify ... the derby can wait, not to mention that Inter are having some serious selection problem of their own.
I have lots of respect for Celtic and their spirit but if I have to keep it real, I must say that I am liking our chances of going thru a lot - it won't be easy but if we stay focused and determined, we will be in the quarterfinals ... and in all honesty, if we can't beat Celtic over 2 rounds, then I guess we really don't have place in the further stages of this CL.
I don't think Liverpool have been too inconsistent in Europe :D
Speaking of which if Milan come out all guns blazing (like Liverpool) in the first half but get a bit luckier and more opportunist by taking their chances, we could make things very difficult for Celtic.

They shouldve won yesterday. Man U looks impressive too.
Chelsea side suck. Lamp, Ballack and Drogba never pass the ball, too greedy and taking too many stupid unreasonable shots. Robben is a flop, but I like him more than the 3 i just mentioned. Sheva works hard, but ... the teammates are morons. I wish that Milan plays Chelsea in the next round.

Pippo is being out-muscled, out thought, and out played by the Celtic defense...we need Gila and Oliviera on, though we may end up conceding space in the 2nd half, by giving up one midfielder...

We've done ok until now. A slightly nervy start, but after about 15 mins we relaxed and applied a lot of pressure. Kaka has been very wasteful in front of goal until now, but his performance is superb other than that.
Pippo was obviously started as he runs in behind the defenders, and considering how many opportunities we got from this last match. Unfortunately, our final ball in this match has been poor at best.
Seedorf has generally been ok, but I think he needs to press forward and support the front two a lot faster. Right now he's staying deeper than he needs to. Also when on the ball, he has to move it quicker, because up until now he's been holding it trying to beat players every time.
I'm not too nervous yet, as unless there is a massive mistake from us, Celtic don't look like they'll be a huge threat. However, enough of wasting our opportunities, we simply can't afford it.
FORZA MILAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mystik: We dominated the first half, getting by far the better chances..Ambro hit the bar with a header, and Kaka had one or two other opportunities to score.
My stream was breaking up a bit, so I am sure I might have missed something. My post above describes Pippo“s basic inability to contribute in a meaningful way to the game, and I hope he is substituted during the half.
We are ruling the midfield, limiting their chances to when we make mistakes...Maldini made one, but luckily we recovered...he tried to beat Hessilink (I think) on the touchline, but ended up gifting him the ball, the resultant break we squashed though.
If we contine as we were, with a little more bite, we should win this comfortably...but Carlo, IMO will have to make some changes.
