View Full Version : Server move in the making
After a period of time of staying on a relatively expensive dedicated server it is time to move to a more, cost wise, manageable server.
I, we, have looked and discarded many server options because I think we all do our best to have a stable site where we can talk about the best team in the world. Many cheaper hosts were risky at best or wouldn't even allow a forum of this size on their cheap plans so we have settled for another server that while almost half our current cost should, crossing fingers, allow us to enjoy talking about Milan and other topics too.
The actual move will probably occur sometime next week, after the season is officially over, and I will do my best to minimize downtime but experience tells me thats wishful thinking. More exact time to follow closer to the move.
We still need all your support, monetary and otherwise, to make MM a good gathering place for all. Reply here or PM me with if you have any questions :)
Rez and I have talked this over for many moons, it seems, and we're finally ready to take the plunge and just do it. We both joined The Admin Zone, a forums for admins and owners of forums, and we immediately found this topic was already being discussed. Rez has done all the legwork on this, I will readily admit! And darn it, he's good at it too!
So this topic is to give everyone a heads up well in advance. I know people don't read announcements here, so we'll keep this topic alive for all to see. Please note he said he's going to TRY to keep downtime to a minimum, but we all know how technology is. One of us will let you know the actual date of the move! :p017: :p017:
And as Rez also said, we still need contributors to help keep us online!
if this new server is half the cost, what are we going to lose out on? Security? Speed? :)
Processor and speed are the main hardware issues, AMD Athlon XP 2200 --->Intel Celeron 2.0GHz. Hopefully not noticeable overall but we have to hope the hardware is solid and eventhough I have monitored the host over the past while one can not be 100% sure about security, reliability until we are there ourselves.
i'm sure things will be just fine :D
Rezak how much time you believe it will take you to put the new server at the worst situation?.

We have to make this move, no if's, and's or but's.
We have a small pool of contributors who faithfully send in payments, but that amount isn't covering our costs. I cannot afford the lion's share any more and haven't been able to in nearly a year, and someone else has been contributing the balance all these months, often an amount of over $100 a month. However, there's a chance this other person will be absent from us for 2 years; I am awaiting word. if this person does indeed end up taking leave, who's going to cover the balance for us?
We have had numerous appeals out to the membership for help in paying for the server. I guess people thought we were crying wolf all the time. I don't know how else to say this, but at this point it's more a matter of taking our chances and at least the forum will remain online. We were just going to make the decision and make the move and let people deal with whatever performance issues arise as a result. I mean, frankly, we're spoiled here--the slightest glitch or burp of the server and people complain.
The way I look at it now, we go to a less expensive server or we see the end of MM. This is a problem I've been wrestling with for about 2 years now. I happen to think we're being foolish with our money to pay so much for a server--close to $2,000 for a year...outlandish, I'm sorry. So Rez has done some investigating for us and has asked all the questions he needs to ask, and he's chosen a server he thinks will carry our site well. I'm satisfied with his decision. It'll be scary to move again, but it's going to happen...b/c is has to happen if MM is going to remain alive! :pp20:
Rez....is Final Football also being moved with us??

In Rezag we trust. yeah he is good at what he do, he help me in the past. :5ok:
Debs, i wasn't complaining ... just asking a question.
Why not buy a Dedicated server off www.Layeredtech.com they are by far the best.
Giorgos, I wish I could tell you but 6 (and up) hours is easily a possibility, don't hold me to that though
humanTORCH, thanx :)
wivstar, I actually remember looking at them earlier in the year, I will keep that mind for the future
Rezak just tell us before to start doing it, i don't wont to try to open Milanmania one day and see that it doesn't work.
That's why we started this thread--tp let people know what's going to happen and also to alert people as to when!
Rez actually thinks we could be ready as early as tomorrow to start the move!

there aren't ignoring you, it's just that they have been a bit busy lately with moving the site to a new server.
As Reza mentioned above, I am sure he will PM you as soon as possible :)

are we done?
not sure ... looks like it.
@ reza
I was having problems accessing MM (could get the home page but not the forums) for more than 2 days but at the same time I see some people have been able to post only a day after the move started.
Not sure what the problem is but Tony29 had the same issue and I would guess these are not the only cases.
I and Tony have both deleted cookies but still it seems it took me much longer to be able to get in MM than others ... and for Tony it still seems to be a problem loading the forum pages from his home PC.
Is this normal, reza, and what could be the problem?

me 2 but i managed to acess the forums on one ocassion for 15 minutes.
Looks like the move is complete, and to stop the griping, I also could not access for 2...maybe 2 1/2 days. Please stop the complaints, we warned you there would be down time and Rez had a time of it just getting things going!!! He does this stuff by himself. As I recall the last time we moved it actually took a day or more for servers all over the globe to pick up the change or some such thing, so it's normal for there to be a lag!
As has been posted NUMEROUS times, if you are able to contribute (hopefully on a regular basis) PLEASE PM REZAG! He will tell you all you need to know! Thank you so much!

no one is complaining debs but it seems that the site was accessible for some members while it was not for others ... doesn't look normal to me and there must be some reason for that to be happening.
yesterday, I could access MM but received a PM from Tony saying that he could access MM from a PC in some internet cafe but not from his home ... and I myself had similar problems.
that's why I asked reza if this is normal and is part of moving the site or something else ... although both Tony and I had delted cookies and such, so that shouldn't be it.
It happened the last time, I explained that in my last post. Rez can give you the technical side of it. Has to do with not every server updating at the same time, etc. Doesn't seem right but that's how the Internet works. All we lowly users can do is be patient and complain to our ISP's about the delays!
forward and remote2book, thanx and please check your PMs :)
zlatanov and others who are wondering about access to the forums. This is how it normally goes...
When a site moves nameservers (a name that indicates where a site is located so when you type milanmania.com you can be taken to the right location) have to be upated. nameserver updates take time to reach all places on the internet, your ISP might still have a record of the old location and direct you to the old location. Another ISP might be able to update to new location a bit faster so when you type a URL you are actually coming to the site's new location. In general when a forum like MM is moved we 'close' it so you will see something like 'sorry we are moving' when you come here, I didn't close it because we were having problems and I wanted to let the forum run for as long as possible. There were some database issues that prevented me from doing what we really wanted but for now we are online and paying 30% less and we still need all your support.

thanks for the clarification, reza ... I would have thought that this update process takes minutes or several hours at worst but not a full day and even more.
hope the database issues aren't too serious.
The nee server seems pretty fast ... I can't see any dif in the time it takes the pages to load ... actually it might be even faster than before :)
Thanks again.
Is it me or has half the site gone missing?
Only a few of the sub sections are showing.
