What do I see... is it a new advertisment on the bottom of the page?! Does that mean we have a sponsor?

Files/Images
When I joined MM I though it was excellent that you could upload images to the MM site itself. Reading this topic I thought that it must be adding to the cost of the site.
I am a long standing member of the Man United Message Board and we are not able to upload images on that site. We can display images by copying and pasting from other sites on the web, use of <img src="image url"> html code to display images. Istead of the site having to store a 100KB image it only stores a small piece of text that is much less than 1KB in size. This makes the site more responsive, faster and it reduces the running cost I would say. Users are encouraged to use free image hosting sites such as http://www.photobucket.com http://www.imageshack.com http://www.flickr.com to share their images. Would this be an option for MM to reduce the cost of running the site?

Chat
Also if some people do want a chat thing I really think a thread in Members Lounge or Flamers Paradise called Chat would work.
I know it's not as good because you can't see who is online and start a conversation with them but you could declare your presence and wait for a reply (if there is someone else around that is). Also if people still want a big group for live match chat why not try organise a group on MSN for Milan matches. It could be easily done if people have MSN and give their names and spread the word. What do you think about my suggestions?

there was a chat room years ago and it was very popular, but the for whatever reason it declined and was stopped. Then it came back and the link to the chat room is still at the top of the page (although it doesn't go anywhere i don't think), but no one used it. A real time chat box/room is being looked into and when the right one is found i'm sure it'll be introduced.

Someone who's been talking about chat--sorry that I forget who, I've had other things to deal with--said that vBB, which is the software we use for the forum, actually has something in it that's a form of chat. That's one option we can look at.
Jim, in the past Jan had to pay $100 a month for a chat system that really was only used during games, and it never functioned really well anyway. The more people who entered it the less stable it was, so people were always getting disconnected adn then it was hard to get back in. We had a member once who created one that we used a short time, but it couldn't handle very many people. IRC chat...I guess Rez could tell yo how that one worked b/c I never used it. Never was able to find the "room" that was ours. Ideally I think we'd like to find something free if possible, and that just brought something to mind. Yahoo chat...I wonder if it's possible to set up a private room for MM people, something that's always there but not visible to the millions who use Yahoo's chat, and have a direct link to it. I'll check into that, as I used to use Yahoo chat alot waayyyy back when I was first getting into this stuff.

The google news is quite aweful! What kind of damage are we looking at?
Is there a possibilty of private advertising? (i.e without the interference of google or similar companies)

I don't know, but from reading Rezag's posts about it in our moderator forum, he's as disgusted as I am. We're uncertain what they mean by "invalid clicks" and the explanation they did give sounds like "fine print" they should have been more upfront with when Rez signed us on! We're not alone in being penalized, but that's not exactly comforting either.
Bottom line is, the ads were actually starting to add some money to what we have to come up with every month, which is $160 for the server. Yes, we'd like to find something less expensive, but that meets our specs. REZ, if you'd post the specs for us here?? I'd like to ask if there are any members who maybe have a little tech knowledge who could help Rez look for another server solution? Right now our costs and finding a solution takes priority over bringing back chat or adding new smilies and stuff like that. Obviously! I'd also like to ask...and I'm going to post this in Rezag's topic in the Member's Lounge as well...that if there are any members who want to see these forums continue beyond the next couple of months, and who can make some sort of donation on a regular basis please PM me or Rez. The goal is to find enough people so that all of us who can contribute are only having to chip in the equivalent of maybe $10 to $15 a month...depending on how many people come forward. Yes, we have issues with beign an international site, but the best way we have right now to collect payments is to PayPal Rez's account. He handles the server payments, so he's the one collecting and forwarding the payments when they are due.

Short of sending via Western Union..is there any other way?

Yeah, PayPal is just easiest for these international dealings, and yes, you can set it up for your credit card.
I do not live in a city where I can change over different currencies, Rez lives in Toronto so if it really came down to it, he can be sent some cash. Better method than that however is to go to your post office and ask them for an international money order in whatever amount in Canadian dollars. So PayPal or International POSTAL money orders.
