Milan's defense revamp plan revealed

Written by Tang Chi-Fai

AC Milan (SW)

MILAN, May 18 (SW) - Samuel, Jankulovski, Cassetti, Miguel, Kuffour, Gamberini and Marco Motta are all on AC Milan's long term list to revamp their defense in the next few seasons.

Nesta (29), Stam (33), Pancaro (34), Cafu (35), Maldini (36), and Costacurta (39) ageing rapidly, Milan face dramatic changes as far as their defense is concerned. It is understood that they already have a shopping list in order to revamp the defense line, starting with Czech star Marek Jankulovski (28), from Udinese.

The player, who fractured his left ankle, has personally admitted he will play as left back at Milan next season. At right back, with Dario Simic potentially off to Everton, the Rossoneri have identified 2 possible sucessors: Marco Cassetti, almost 28, from Lecce and Portuguese international Luis Miguel Brito Garcia Monteiro, aka Miguel, from Benfica (25), who shone during Portugal's journey to semi-final in EURO 2004.

Milan's Sporting Director Ariedo Braida has allegedly flown to Portugal several times this season to scout him.

19-year-old Marco Motta of Atlanta is yet another name on the list. The Azzurrini, whose playing style is compared to Gianluca Zambrotta's, could be comfortably slotted in left back or right back position. It is however claimed that rivals Internazionale would see him as the successor of local hero Javier Zanetti.

For center back positions, Real Madrid player Walter Adrian Samuel has topped Milan's wanted list. But the Rossoneri are likley not to rush in this summer, the Nesta-Maldini-Stam partnership likely to remain strong enough next term.

However, Milan will be happy to bring in a player to replace Alessandro Costacurta, as the 4th center back. Samuel Kuffour, who will leave Bayern Munich on a 'Bosman' in the summer, has emerged as the perfect choice, with Inter Milan once again in competition for his services.

The last name mentioned is Alessandro Gamberini. The 23-year-old Bologna player, who plays in a left back position, has improved a lot this season.

The other thread about defenders that has just been started might aswell be merged with this one.

Getting Samuel would be fantastic, however i can only see that happening if we've either decided to let Real have Gilardino (think about it, why else would they sell their best defender to us (even if he hasn't played well) unless we gave them something they wanted more ? ) OR we are going to sell Stam.

We surely wouldn't get Samuel to be 4th choice centre back ... and i really can't stand the idea of having Maldini at left back and Stam at right back, that would be a terrible mistake.

I should imagine it's just the annual summer rumours again, although it's fun to read

there are many young defenders on sale............
i think chivu or samuel is the best choice; alex is also a good option(although its virtually impossible).
while im not 100% sure about kompany......... i havent heard much of him this season- but we'll see........ anderlecht will be meeting Clubb Brügge: one of the best teams of belgium. lets see how he plays.

so either samuel or chivu................ not sure which one

Samuel would be a good signing depending on price. Real Madrid are pretty unrealistic in their valuations of their own players though and probably see him worth about 14m, which he's not. Realistically he is worth at most 10m, I think he's be a good deal for milan at 8m.

Chivu at left-back is a baaaaaaaaaaaad idea as is any idea of playing centre-backs in full-back positions.

the problem is not price, i am afraid.

the problem is that there are very few defenders up to Milan's calibre. I prefer Italian players, I am not obsessed in nationality like "an all-italian Milan", the reason is that communication, cooperation and coordination is so vital in organizing the defense.

As for whom to pick, how much to pay, I trust in Galliani and Braida and Berlusconi's checkbook.

either way we need some young blood in our defense. Our defenders are great, but they cant go forever age is catching up with them. I hope we make some quality signings in our defense. Players like maldini and costacurta can teach our new defenders as they are both milan greats.
