Milan’s Strategic Environmental Assessment begins as future stadium inches forward

Milan improve after
slow start in a game with
ludicrous VAR and on pitch
refereeing

Milan lost to Lazio 1-0. The team looked toothless at best and the front two of Leao and Pulisic – reminder that neither are center forwards by any definition – boiled over to the point of frustration and lashing out. Leao was subbed out early and is due to miss this week 30 match as well.
The trailing pack of Napoli, Como, Juventus and others are closer than Inter is at the top and indeed as of this writing Napoli have beaten Cagliari and overtaken Milan for second spot. Whether or not a scudetto was realistically within reach Milan have shown an inability to grab the chance. The inability starts from an unwillingness to build in August. The thin squad, barely touched in January, was not made to excite. From Allegri’s style to the lack of true scoring center forwards this team was made to improve from the season before and is at least doing that much.
Fullkrug is set to start alongside Pulisic for this Torino match. The midfield will see the return of Rabiot and Bartesaghi. Fofana may give way for Ricci. That Jashari alongside Modric experiment at Lazio looked random and pretty much failed. It was disappointing to see Allegri choosing to just fit Jashari somewhere in the midfield, tactically it didn’t achieve much. Giving minutes to both Jashari and Ricci has at least the ‘gaining match experience’ benefit. Gabbia is not yet ready to return and the back three is likely to stay Tomori, De Winter and Pavlovic, of course with Maignan in goal.
Gimenez is getting closer to a return and is due for a bench spot versus Torino.
The international break that will decide Azzurri’s World Cup fate begins after this weekend. Not that Azzurri will feature any Milan players. The previously mooted Italianization of Milan is nowhere near reality.
Torinto sacked Marco Baroni and hired Roberto D’Aversa in February. The new coach has two wins in three.

Renewed Leao story as player’s poor performance and unhappiness at being subbed add questions about future

Wrong approach, tactics and performance condemn Milan to loss a week after important derby win

Milan beat Inter in the derby courtesy of an unexpected source. Estupinan smashed the ball into the net leaving Yann Sommer surprised and frozen. Allegri’s tactical tweaks taking advantage of the wide areas – occupied by Luis Henrique especially – paid off. The gap to first place and Inter was reduced to seven points. The prevailing feeling is that Inter’s march towards the scudetto is still intact.
Some feared that Rabiot might get a yellow during week 27’s visit to Cremonese and miss the derby. It of course didn’t happen. The Frenchman did get the yellow versus Inter however. The midfield needs to be tweaked to accommodate for the suspension but thankfully two capable players are available. Ricci or Jashari will start in Rabiot’s place. It seems that Allegri will stick to the derby goal scorer leaving the returning Bartesaghi on the bench for this match at least. The rest of the lineup is likely to remain the same as well. De Winter in particular has grown a lot and looks more than capable of being a starter in Gabbia’s absence. Tomori and Pavlovic are playing well enough and have helped the team keep the ball out of the back of the net. Milan now lead the Serie A in fewest goals allowed with 20. The other injured player, Loftus-Cheek, will need few more weeks to recover from the jaw fracture but Gabbia could be ready to return later this month or perhaps after the international break. Pulisic and Leao both continue to look less than 100% but are likely to start over Nkunku and Fullkrug. Latest whisper about the latter is that Milan may not exercise the cheap €5 million option after all. A bigger spending summer is anticipated or at least hoped. This should include a higher profile center forward instead of the German.
Alessio Romagnoli is likely to miss this match with a calf issue. Lazio have one Serie A win since the end of January and sit in the middle of the Serie A table.

Gimenez returns to full training, the forward last played in October

Estupinan scores first goal to
help Milan win derby

This edition of the Derby della Madonnina has first versus second facing each other. Inter are, by most definitions, running away with the scudetto as they are 10 points ahead of Milan. Milan have to look over their shoulder, as much, if not more than the gap ahead. Fifth place Como started this matchday nine points behind Milan and they won (beating Cagliari 2-1) to close the gap.
Milan enter this match up having struggled to beat Cremonese. Chances were wasted and a now typical first half slow start had looked to condemn Milan to more dropped points. Very late Pavlovic and Leao goals rescued the points.
Inter have now exited the Champions League and besides the Serie A only have the Coppa Italia to play for. Less games should mean more training and rest. Milan of course have had one of the lighter schedules in the team’s recent seasons. Will this mean much or make a difference? Probably not in the title race.
On the injury front Bartesaghi exited the pitch late versus Cremonese but could be ready for the bench at least. Players like Rabiot and Saelemaekers who were one yellow away from missing this derby finished the match unscathed. Gabbia, hernia surgery, and Loftus-Cheek, fractured jaw, will miss a few weeks but Gimenez is reportedly close to a return.
Allegri has little defensive options and this means Tomori, De Winter and Pavlovic will start in front of Maignan. There is little chance of surprises elsewhere on the pitch with Fofana likely to remain preferred with Modric and Rabiot alongside him. Saelemaekers and Esptupinan remain the wide players. The latter may give way to Bartesaghi if the Italian’s recovery is deemed sufficient. Despite struggling for most of the season Pulisic should start. The same could also be said about Leao.
Allegri’s non-pressing style is increasingly frustrating. When deployed against teams like Cremonese it becomes more so with the middle not set up to pressure the opposition and relying more on the wider players and on the running and carries of Pavlovic for example.
Inter are without Lautaro but are otherwise relatively healthy.
