Speaking about salaries in general, if we can only afford 2-3 players to be in the range of 7+mil net....it's hard to argue that one of those should be a GK. I think all of us (had the GK in question not been Gigio) would be in agreement that those high salaries should go to a midfielder, or a winger, or a striker, etc. Not to undermine the importance of a good GK....but let's be honest. If you had 10mil to allocate to 2 positions...a GK and a ACM....how do you allocate that? Do you give 8mil to the GK and have 2 left over for an ACM? I think if it wasn't Gigio, all of us would say to just sign a top ACM and use 7/8mil on that....and then get a solid GK for around 2mil a year.
Because the difference is this...you can find a solid GK at 2-3mil per year. They may not be Gigio or Neuer...but they'll be solid. Take a look at this Maignan dude for example. Won the league with Lille, and could bring him for 2.5mil a year.
BUT, you can't find a solid ACM at 2-3mil a year. At 2mil per year ACMs, you are looking at Jose Sosa and Pasalic type players.
People love goals. That is also why defenders never make as much as attackers on average. The problem with a possible Donna free transfer for me was always FFP rules. We just don’t benefit at all. I honestly don’t see that happening despite the news.
But we do benefit. 8mil per year salary + taxes is about 15mil. That 15mil goes as 100% expense on this year's books. That's a lot for a club like ours that barely breaks 200mil in rev.
Now of course, selling him for 50mil would have brought an extra 50mil revenue this fiscal year....but it just wasn't possible. I don't like to blame anyone (management or Donnarumma) without knowing facts. I would assume we attempted to renew last year but failed. I also assume certain figures were only possible with CL. Also, maybe Gigio was only going to accept in the case of CL. Maybe there was a gentleman's agreement to discuss after CL (or no CL) was achieved. In any case, there is no smoke without fire.
If Donnarumma leaves I'll be surprised, but most of all disappointed in him as a person. I understand that these players are professionals, and that if they're being offered a higher contract some place else then they might take it, but to leave on a free transfer instead of signing a contract so the club could get something from his sale is really shitty.
Billy Costacurta had signed a blank paper, which was meant to be hia contract. Maldini was asked from Europes top clubs, never left even in years of difficulty. Donnaruma can simply fuck off. Kebab too. Any other player who puts himself above the club, can fuck off if not kicked out
The problem with signing a super high wage extension only with the looks to sell in the future...is a problem. It's a decision that could backfire. Let's say we commit to 10mil a year (which is roughly 18mil gross) for the next 3-4 years.....if that doesn't fall within our budget...what do we do a year from now if we can't sell Gigio? Let's say he's injured, or hits a terrible run of form, etc etc. There could be a million potential problems that could come up in a year. What then? We're stuck with 18mil per year that we can't necessarily afford.
We should not sign him with the looks to sell. Figure out what the amount that we can commit to is and that's the offer. We can think about selling or not when the time comes. But not now. I would only offer extensions to players I intend to keep. Not to ones I wanna sell before the extension is already signed. I certainly wouldn't offer more just so they can sign and just so I can sell them.
I believe if Milan offered 8mil to Gigio, it's because they feel comfortable paying him that for the duration of the contract. Not because they'll scramble the money somehow now, but then sell him a year from now.
Re Donnarumma - why I will blame management is for the simple fact that you just don't allow your most valuable players run down their contracts. No matter what. You cajole, you plead, you bargain, you threaten. Simply put, you do whatever is damn necessary to avoid that. Especially when dealing with a devil agent like Raiola. Because the moment they enter the last months of their contracts, they have you where they want you, the initiative is out of your hands. We've seen how Mirabelli arm-twisted Raiola in the last Donnarumma saga. That's what you do. Heck, you can even threaten to freeze the players out of the squad, it's well within your right. We've seen it done by clubs countless times.
For Dalot, personally I don't believe he's done enough for us to spend money to keep him. I'd rather we use Kalulu as Calabria backup. I don't even think Dalot is that much of a better defender than Kalulu. Has more experience, yeah, and a bit better at going forward, but that's about it. Just use the money elsewhere.
