RE: UEFA Champions League 2022-2023 - Arildonardo - 09-02-2022

Adli, Thiaw and Vranckx to miss out on Milan's UCL squad. Also Ibrahimvic and Florenzi due to injuries.

The rules relating to homegrown players mean that Pioli will only be able to name 22 players.

Likely squad:

GK: Maignan, Mirante.
DF: Calabria, Dest, Kjaer, Tomori, Kalulu, Gabbia, Theo, Ballo.
MF: Tonali, Bennacer, Pobega, Krunic, De Ketelaere, Diaz.
FW: Messias, Saelemaekers, Giroud, Origi, Rebic, Leao.

As reported by Sky Italia and MilanNews.

RE: UEFA Champions League 2022-2023 - nefremo - 09-02-2022

RB: Calabria, Dest (Florenzi)
CB: Kjaer, Tomori, Kaluli, Gabbia
LB: Theo, FBT (Florenzi)
CM: Tonali, Isma, Pobega, Krunic
AM: CDK, Diaz
LW: Leao, Rebic
RW: Salad, Jr
CF: OliG, Origi

I think Florenzi will be in. At least I think he should be. He is out for about 2 months, sure, but it doesn't hurt to have him in the list. He could (with some luck) be ready for the last 1 or 2 games (Oct 25th and Nov 2nd). At this point, he wouldn't be "taking" a spot from anyone anyway. It's only Italian players we can include, so it's Florenzi or nobody. Might as well add him.

Difficult decisions for Pioli, I'm sure.
I would remove FBT and have Dest be the cover for LB if needed. Even Calabria has played on the left before and done well. So I don't think FBT will see any game time in the CL. I would rather have 1 more CM/AM in the form of Adli/Vranckx as that'll give us a bit more flexibility on the formation we can use and we can change to a 3 man midfield if need be while still having adequate bench.

Not enough homegrown? What a great piece of management that was. This girl should go bitch Gazidis since I have been calling this whole mercato.

Not having Adli isn't very smart. I don't think Diaz should be in the squad. Adli can cover multiple positions including AM. Why not call Adli up over the 2 year flop ? Again we don't own Diaz and the way he has gown up to this point I hope we don't buy him. So put minute's into a guy that IS ACTUALLY OWNED by us ! Diaz can play Coppa Italia.

I don't know man. I really wasn't expecting Adli to take over from Diaz. That was always going to be CDK. I think Adli will need some time. Serie A is the right place for him to play and show what he has. The CL is too short. It's 6 games essentially. No time for experiments. No time for trials. Whoever is integrated within the system most should be there. Of course, you are not going to leave out CDK or Origi because of that, but I just don't think Adli is of that level yet.
The argument can be made that Diaz has flopped and has already had his chance. But the whole picture has to be looked at and the fact that we have to make the most of these 6 games meant that Diaz was never going to be left out.

There is this hype around Adli in general that I don't understand. I didn't watch him at Bordeaux so my only sample is the summer friendlies and Sassuolo. I think he did well during the summer, but you could see he is very raw. Some of those performances, imo, were over-exagurated. You could see the talent, but it needs refining. In vontrast, Diaz was also great in the friendlies. You could say even more so than Adli.
In a serious game, when Adli came on against Sassuolo, he was dynamic and tried to make things happen. But again, you could see the inexperience and this raw nature. He was too frenetic and eager. It's not a criticism. It's normal. It's all to make the point that he needs time, and it's not something we can afford in the CL.

Back to Diaz....he always seems frenetic. Rushed. Etc. But I think the decision comes solely because of the fact that there is a larger sample of games where the coaching staff knows exactly how to use him and what they'll get out of him. There is also the bit of experience part that he possesses over Adli.

I don't think this is such a disaster. I think it was to be expected seeing as how.many "foreigners" we have in the squad. But what else can we do when Italy is currently not producing the level of talent needed in abundance. The players that have been produced, are simply way too expensive. Sassuolo wanting 30+M for Frattesi for example is just too much. The value provided isn't enough to make up for the cost. Not when you can go to France and buy Adli for 8M. Or Vranckx for this 1m loan. Or Thiaw for 5. Etc. Point is there are better players out there for A LOT less money. So than, to spend that much more just to bring in an Italian doesn't make sense. Not for a club that operating in a self sustainability model.

As I mentioned earlier, I personally would have left out FBT and brought Adli/Vranckx. But not at the expense of Diaz. No way.

but we need that italian or train in italy to meet the quota either we like it or not, right now, i dont think we meet the quota with all the 1st team players so someone needed to be sacrificed for that spot and that is not a good squad management imo
