El Shaarawy hasn't played that much professional (a bit less than Pato when we bought him)... Pato was 17, non-EU and the star/leader of the U-21 Brazil team and Internacional, Stephan is 18 and Italian, lead Padova to promotion from C1 to B.
El Shaarawy is being rated just as much as how Pato was (partly due to the Italian media overrating players).
Now we compare the prices Galliani has shelved out for players in last 10 years:
- Pato was bought at 17 for 22m euro -- we believed he was going to be the next best Brazil striker an we thought 22m Euro was worth it.
- Kaka was bought at 22 yrs old for 6m euro, was very highly rated by the world of football and Milan.
- Gila, Ronaldinho and Ibrahimovic were all strikers bought for 24m euro
- Fossati, highly rated 16 year old Italian midfielder, was bought for 5m euro.
- Silva, now best defender out there, bought at 25m years old for 12m euro.
and El Shaarawy for 18, (i dont think he is higher rated than Merkel or Fossati), we bought 50% of his contract for 7.5m euro (so that means, as of today, we consider him worth 15m).... if Milan is willing to splash 15m on an 18 year old, in a time that the cash is very important for a team like Milan, then it must mean we really believe he is the next big thing. I dont think he is worth the amount though.
I am also very very disappointed we gave away 50% of Merkel for a reported 5m. IMO, Merkel's 50% sale is a lose-lose situation. We have gained absolutely nothing. If we wanted him to play in Serie A, we should have loaned him either to Genoa or Novara. He's going to go to Genoa and Preziosi will give us a hard time when we try to get the other 50%...it could easily go up 2 or 3 million more at the very least - even if he has a bad season.
In conclusion,
I think El Shaarawy is not worth 15m, however I think buying 50% for 7.5 now is better than buying 100% next year for 20m. If he isn't 7.5m good enough, we could sell back to Genoa for the same amount. I think it is a good piece of business only if we already have enough money for our other primary targets for the team.
Merkel's 50% sale to Genoa is a lose-lose situation and I really dislike that move. I think we already lost alot of money to Genoa buying back Strasser, Zigoni and Paloschi because all three of them went up in stock. Now they will have Beretta, El Shaarawi and Merkel - our best 3 youngsters (meaning that the ones we want and value the most) - on co-ownership with them. We do not gain anything from this - in my opinion. I would be really glad if someone can explain to me if I am wrong.
