I have said it before, but the most important thing is to change formation. We cant play a 4-2-3-1 when we have average wingers and an average number 10. Thats actually three positions in our team that really hurts us.

With our material we should play 3-5-2. We have really solid CB,s in Kjær, Romagnoli, Kjær, and good backups in Kalulu and Gabbia. Theo should be used in a more advanced position so he could be even more deadly offensively, and he will not be that exposed for defensive lapses. A central three with Kessie, Bennacer and Tonali is really strong, and in mye opinion the best midfield in Italy, especially if Tonali raise his bar this year. Leao as a SS will be good and ce can rotate with Rebic in that role. Zlatan and Giroud can rotate for that other space. In this formation we will be really solid i think. Maybe not as flashing, but tons of hard work and physicality. And when we dont have that creative spark we have to think in other ways.

When we meet the defensive teams who dont play open we could start with both Giroud and Zlatan to create havoc in defense and get the goals from deadballs or second balls. That often really effective against such teams. If we meet more open played opponents we can use Diaz or Illicic in and more advanced midfield positon to exploit the gaps, and Leao for Giroud for counter attacking and more "flashy" play.

What are you guys opinion? I really think this will benefit our team big time, i know tactics is more than just positions, but i think i have som valid points here.

My opinion is that I think we'll sign Ilicic and James therefore we'll have a good winger and a solid CAM lol could b wishful thinking but reports are flying out

Unfortunately Pioli hasn’t been working on it, we simply lack practice. 3 player defense is a big change and we should have played with that formation in friendlies. Now it’s too late I am afraid.

no way odegaard is leaving them, kubo might be possible to get, but i doubt real want to sold him, maybe loan him, maybe a 2 year loan deal with option would be good for kubo coming here

We do play with 3-5-2 or 3-4-2-1 at times. It's sometimes how we attack by letting Theo roam further upfield and tuck in the LW closer to the center of the field, while keeping Calabria back, or sometimes letting Kessie goes back as the third CB.

4-2-3-1 is how we line up defensively, most of the times. Towards the end of last season, Pioli experimented with 4-4-2 defensive formation, by pushing Brahim closer to the CF.

I think our squad should be able to play in 2-3 different formations, depending on the circumstances. But, to play offensively in 4-2-3-1 formation, yes we need a better RW definitely and another strong CAM. I'm more encourage with what Brahim has shown as #10 in the past two friendlies. He's more willing to try to find spaces in between the lines, though, we may need either the LW or the RW to push up to support the CF.

I don't quite like playing exclusively with a 3-man defense. Often times, you really have too many extra man on the back. Unless one of your centerbacks could do what Gasperini seems to be doing with Atalanta, and pushing that one guy upfront unexpectedly from the back. Plus, with a 4-man defense, you get 2 layers on defense from attack from the flanks.
