This trailer explains the combat, but I can't seem to find the English translated version anymore:

Anyway, the basic idea if I remember was it's an action RPG, rather than turn based. You only control Noctis, while there is an attack button. There is a defence button, which when held down will block or particularly parry attacks. You also do combo attacks with your team members, but it's context sensitive so is kind of automatic but dependent on your and their position. There are summons in the game, but how they will play is currently unknown. A couple of summons have been shown so far, one is assumed to being Leviathan in the E3 trailer where they announced it's FFXV rather than Versus XIII, while the latest trailer shows the Titan. However, as you can see in the trailer, you won't have summons until you earn them (hence they fight Titan rather than summon). Magic is limited to Noctis at this point, though the director has said some sort of sharing system will be in place so your team members can also use it.

More info on the game and gameplay from the director can be found here:

Merry (late) Christmas to all who celebrate, hope it was good.

Mystik recently asked about combat in FFXV and as if to answer him directly, the game's director has now spoken about it. You can find details here:

Hmmm I guess I am used to the option that for each character you could choose to use their physical attack, or magic or some special ability. Now it seems you'll just have one attack button and different equipped weapons will have varying abilities. The article did mention that the magic system is quite developed but not like FFVIII.

Bear in mind this game is an action RPG, not a turn/menu based one like previous Final Fantasies, so it will feel quite different to older Final Fantasy games. The original director for the game, Tetsuya Nomura, has created the Kingdom Hearts games, while the current director for the game, Hajime Tabata, has created Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core and more recently Final Fantasy Type 0, so maybe it's worth looking at these games to understand what sort of combat system might be expected, as they're all action RPGs. That said, the good news is these guys generally have a good track record with their other games, with Kingdom Hearts being a series that in the view of many has overtaken Final Fantasy as the lead brand in SquareEnix, while the games by Tabata have both received good critical acclaim.

Good news is we should have a better understanding of FFXV when Final Fantasy Type 0 gets released in the West for the first time next year, as preordered copies have a code to get the demo for FFXV.

Right I guess I'm more used to Final Fantasy being a turn/menu based RPG and it is taking me a while to come to grips with the switch to action RPG. I'm definitely going to get it regardless. Hopefully it turns out to be a solid game though!
