21 may - Coppa Italia Final

So, because this match could actually salvage our season and #makemilangreatagain I decided to open this thread early so we can discuss and Brocchi (who obviously crawls this forum) can get some ideas on how to tackle Rubentus.

1973 AC Milan - Juventus 5-2 ---
1975 ACF Fiorentina - AC Milan 3-2 ---

2004 SS Lazio - Juventus 4-2 (agg)
2012 SSC Napoli - Juventus 2-0
2015 Juventus - SS Lazio 2-1

15 finals for Juve, of which they have managed to clinch 11 wins. An impressive 72% winning ratio...
10 finals for AC Milan, of which we have won 5. A 50% winning ratio...

So this one goes in favour of Juve. But interestingly, we have not played Juventus many times before in the final. We met three times, of which we only won once. 33% of all games go in our favour, to make it sound less depressing. But what's really interesting is that our only win comes from a very bland season where we were a midtable team. Juventus meanwhile, were second in serie A only losing 5 games in the entire season. They had missed the title by only two points.

Ac Milan's performance in the finals

There isn't much information about games before the 1980's. In 1942 we met for the first time. While winning drawing in the opening game due to a Gino Capello equaliser for Milan. However, we were squashed at delle alpi losing 4-1.

A few decades after that is 1972. The final against a midtable (9th!) SSC Napoli:

Then comes 1973. Our moment to shine against Juventus? A neutral stadium was the theatre for this beautiful piece of football. Romeo Benetti scored the equaliser, after which extra-time came in. However, in true Italian cup final fashion, there was no winner after 120 minutes. Magherini scored the final penalty for Milan, winning the cup for us against Rubentus.

We're meeting Fiorentina 2 years after that. In a game that will be dominated by terrible goalkeeping, both Fiorentina manages to score a beautiful first-touch goal from distance. However, an early penalty made sure that Fiorentina had the upper hand early in the game and they score the late winner in a nice fashion.

2 year further down the road, in 1977, our third coppa italia final in 7 years, we manage to clinch yet another win. This time against our city rivals, who were placed just behind us in the league. In a game that depicts the difference in speed of play, it took us over 50 minutes to score our first goal after a foul by inter (who else...?). This beautiful video gives an idea of how the game went:

After this, it takes us 8 years to play another coppa final. 1985 we face Sampdoria who win both the home and away game. The attacking sass of Sampdoria is what wins them the game. The one thing that is clear about this video is how much football changed over such a short period of the time. The pace is higher and a lot more technicality is added to the players' skillset. The game is played in two legs, which you can see in the video below:

1990. Juventus - Milan once again and for the second and final time it is Juventus who wins the game. It is incomprehensible how Sacchi's Milan with starlet Marco van Basten was unable to win this game. We had many chances, but the only goal came from Roberto Galia from Juventus.

1998 is the year in which we lose the Coppa Italia against Lazio. Again, it takes us 8 years to even get to the final. This time, with a completely different team. Newer names such as Massimo Ambrosini, paolo maldini © and Christian abbiati pop up in the first team. One of our best strikers ever, George Weah, secured the win for us at the San siro. We even had a huge chance when we played in Rome as Lazio was down 0-1 early in the game. However, they came back up to seal the win on aggregate.

It has been 13 years since we last played and won the coppa italia final. That was against Roma, against whom we won with a 6-3 on aggregate. It was this season in which we also claimed the serie A title after taking the first position in January. We only lost 2 games that season. A strong serie A side that also won the UEFA supercup and the champion's league afterwards.

How were our seasons going?
Unfortunately, it is not the case that we mostly win the Coppa Italia when we have had a mediocre season. There are seasons where we are 7th, but most of the time we were placed around 4th.

But we should not rely on patterns of the past in this game. I am sure that Juventus can be beaten. We nearly did it a few games ago and have done it many times before in the past!

How is Juventus doing?
Juventus have been on fire since january. They have yet to lose a game in serie a according to my research. More often than not are they scoring more than two goals. Their player obviously have more skill than a lot of players at AC Milan or any other Italian team for that matter, but the amount of times they have kept a clean sheet is what is really admirable.

Last but not least.
Their mascot is a ridiculously looking zebra.... SIAMO DIAVOLO, andiamo raggazzi!

I invite you to discuss the game below. How do you think Brocchi should take the game?

So much animo for the game that could make our season and give galliani a reason to boast about berlusconi again!

Isn't there a risk that if we win this competition, Berlu could say "we won a new trophy under my era, it's the beginning of the rebuilding, I don't sell" ?
One should not speak ill of the dead.
So stop laughing at Juventus !

Great post. Watching those videos... What nostalgia. That ridiculous FK by Rivera and what a run from Maldera. Serginho's precise crosses, Abbiati pulling the heroics. Incredibile!

Sadly I have no hopes for this final. Over the last few seasons we always seem to play well against Juve but we lack the mental strength to beat them. I just don't see how we will win this but it would be wonderful if we do. Even if I have to watch Montolivo lift a trophy.

I'm actually struggling to care about this final. I really don't think we stand a chance playing Brocchi's kind of football against a team that is so much better than us.

There are speculations now that the team is refusing to follow Brocchi's instructions on purpose, as a protest against Berlusconi sacking Miha. On one hand it's unprofessional, but I do understand them too. Gives us little hope for this final though - they probably don't want to win it!

I just posted the same thing in the Roma thread. The sad thing is this chaos has become the norm for Milan these days.

It wouldn't make a difference. We couldn't win it even if we wanted to! The difference in quality is astounding.
