During the times when Gattuso played for us, I used to not worry when we traveled to play Roma. In recent years however they (and Napoli in particular) have developed this psychological metal edge over Milan where they always grind out results against us, even when we play better.
What I like about Gattuso is that he’s trying to bring back that mentality back to Milan. He repeatedly talks about how the players need to be mentally ready for certain games and him focusing on ‘one game at a time’ is a good way to keep the players focused.
I honestly was very disappointed when we hired Gattuso as I didn’t think he was ready at all but he has grinded out results and actually, we have had some good performances even in games where we barely got points. The link-up play, chances created, shots on goal and most importantly the confidence of the players has improved. Rino however has only faced easy teams up to now. Now the real test begins and I really hope he’s up to task.
The three points tonight will be so crucial for the race to 4th but I’m not optimistic that we will get them. We need to stay behind Lazio, Roma and Inter and keep breathing behind their necks. One of them at least will fall behind and if we somehow keep up this good form against top clubs, we can get back in the race for the CL spots.
I also do not like this Kalinic favoritism one bit nor do I like how they are treating Andre Silva. The kid is potentially a world superstar, he just needs confidence the same way Rino is doing it for the rest of his starting 11. I just wish he gambled on Silva rather than Kalinic on all those games. He knows that players need game time to improve their fitness and improve their confidence.
He’s given many players starting positions even though they didn’t deserve it from their performances such as: Calabria, Romagnoli, Bonucci, Biglia, Kalinic, Hakan. He insisted on playing them week in week out until they found their form and we can all clearly see the improvement in all of those players (except Kalinic). This confidence that Rino is transmitting to those players would give the highest returns if it works with Andre Silva. The potential in that kid is immense. The ceiling for Andre Silva is so much higher than Cutrone’s in my opinion. Cutrone is looking more and more like Belotti as he plays with minor differences, thank god we didn’t spend all that money on Belotti. Cutrone may be outperforming Andre now, but when Silva finds his feet (hopefully at Milan), there’ll be no comparison in what each player will bring to his team. I don’t measure a players performance by goals scored only, but by everything they bring throughout the 90 minutes.
Back then Pippo might score more goals than Sheva, but Andriy was the better player overall and brought so much more than Pippo did on the pitch. Missing Andriy for a match was more of a problem than missing Pippo for instance. I feel that Andre Silva can become a great in the sport, I just hope he is patient enough to break out at Milan. As things stand, I hate seeing how we are treating him but Gattuso’s grinding out the results and that’s all that matters right now.
