He's a sound midfielder, to be honest this is the type of player we should have as a back up, but when you're adding him into the mix and you already have Bennacer and RLC on big wages doing the same job it's just another BS signing. We should be signing a midfielder to start and improve what we have. Players like Stephen should've been signed on 1.5-2m wages to be subs instead of 7-8m a season Bennacer who is always injured.

Apart from Fofana and Reijndeers playing every game out midfield lack a strong defensive player. Fofana is not the one, he is not strong, cynical nor have the tenacity we would need for cover there. he is more all-around. His position on the field is also often way to offensive, which is the reason our managers want to opt for Tomori's speed to cover the fact our midfield can't help our defense much. Unfortunately Tomori also lack those qualities of tenacity, cynicism and positioning.

So...Catch 22?

No, just a double problem we face as both midfield and defense lack a player that truly commit to stopping dangerous plays, the goal against Cagliari (while a mistake from Maignan) showed this clearly.

Our whole midfield + one fullback was way up the field while we were one goal up. Fofana after his missed pass should have fouled the Cagliari player, as said, not cynical enough. Then our defense just fell back, neither blocking any shots/pass nor pressing them.

while watching us I am often wondering why Fofana go so high up the field (and with none else covering him), who is supposed to cover for him? Answer seems to be noone.
