The only thing i know is at France Football they are totally morons as well as the journalists, so i'm not that sure Sheva will

GIOVANNI was actually right as the journalists and other people who are somehow involved into the "France Football" activities underestimate SHEVA!That was obviously seen for the last several years. However, he should win this prize in the nearest future and perhaps this future is gonna come in a cople of months.

Surely, Sheva could get the Golden Ball in case if his appearance in the national squad is to be similar to what we are seeing now when he plays for AC Milan in Serie A and Champions League.

So, the answer - he will...
FORZA, SHEVA!

It will be Ronaldinho or Henry ..

I think Andriy should and WILL win it this year. you have to be a complete moron not to give it to Il RE del GOL! :fero:
just let'em try NOT give it to the king :nunu:

Andriy Shevchenko gave(give!!!) an outstanding performances and awesome displays both in Serie A and Europe. With him passing the Gol record of the great Marco Van Basten, the player who won their prestigious award for 3 times, I say NO WAY HE CAN'T WIN!!!

FORZA FLAUTO MAGICO SHEVA! :de3:

Considering the award normally goes to someone who has performed well in the Champion's League for the previous season, and also a major summer tournament (Euro 2004), I guess the likely winner is either Maniche or Deco. Ricardo Carvalho could be a darkhorse but everyone knows defenders won't win. :nana: :grinser:

I suppose it's advantage Deco for his impressive start at Barca.

If the winner has to be the most "entertaining" player it has to be Ronaldinho - it`s simply great to watch all the stuff he can do with the ball on high level.

He and Maradona is nearly on same level

True. Ronaldinho is possiby the best player in the world now. But more often than not, the award will not go to the most "entertaining" player. ;)

Philip Cocu had this remark about Ronaldinho in this month's 442 magazine.

"Ronnie is so quick that he can touch the ball with his feet 4 times in half a second. If I try to play like him I'll end up injuring myself" :howler: :howler: :howler:

Can't agree more. :delol: :delol: :delol:

Sheva has a big name and a realistic chance of winning it. But so do Ronaldinho and Henry - two players that, admittedly, deserve the award as much as Sheva :)

San Paolo should have won it last year....now it is too late :d55:

this time I would love Sheva to win it of course, but I see Ronaldinho with more chances.....and not because Ronaldinho is better than Sheva (because he is definitely not).....Henry of course has chances too, but again, I see the brazilian with more chances than Henry, anyway, there is still time for things to change.

who knows, maybe Ronaldo will win it  ;)

Sheva should get it, hopefully he will....FORZA 'LO TZAR'!!!

Definitely true about the journalists... but if Sheva continues this form, why not, eh? :)

Last year they gave coments bout why maldini would not win it: "Oh, it's just that defenders rarely win it..."

If he keps it like this it would be hard to find any other contestants for the GB. However, Sheva has one BIG disadvantage - he plays for the Ukraina NT so success there is pretty limited, at least for now.

I think Sheva will struggle against Ronaldinho and Henry.

Ronaldinho has lots of advantages in that he is Brazilian and he does tricks  this will be enough for a lot of judges. He is a great player but he simply hasnt outperformed Sheva over the past year.

Henry will have the considerable force of the English media behind him. He had a brilliant season last year and has got off to a flyer this year, in 8 league games he has 7 goals and 7 assists  Perhaps Arsenals lack of European success will harm his chances just as Sheva's lack of International success does.

05-10-2004, 11:48
if Sheva played for Brazil, then he should've won the Golden Ball in the last 5 successive years. :D

Henry is fantastic, but only in Premierships. He couldn't make it in European championships. yet he couldn't show a magnificent performance for France in the WC '06 qualifying.

Ronaldinho is great with Barca and Brazil. but UCL this season will show us who is the better between Ronaldinho (Barca) and Shevchenko (A.C. Milan).

Mourinho: Give The Golden Ball To Sheva
10/6/2004 11:10:00 AM
Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho believes that Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko deserves to win the Golden Ball.
He told ’Gazzetta dello Sport’: "Henry did very well in England, Lampard in the Premiership and at EURO 2004. But Shevchenko did something more. He was fantastic in the most difficult league of the world for the strikers. To score so many goals in Italy is an extraordinary achievement that must be rewarded, in my opinion."

These days I doubt the evaluation of "best" footballers really reflect the players' calibre. Sure, Ronaldinho and Henry are good players but if I'm not mistaken, a chunk of the "points" the players obtain are from their contribution to the club that season (e.g. Champions League, domestic competitions, national team achivements). Based on that we have to ask: If Ronaldinho wins, we also have to ask what did Barcelona achieve last season? Henry, apart from the Arsenal victory in EPL (unbeaten, at that!), what else?

..and despite all of his achievements for his club and his respectable status, where does Paolo Maldini stand in front of the eyes of France Football judges?

If Sheva is not to win this "BALL", the only candidate is Deco!!!!

I love Pippo but I can't see him even getting a sniff. I hope Sheva wins He has consistently scored goals in a league that is considered by many to be the toughest leaguie to score goals. He's also not your typical striker i.e. Vieri who just sits around the 18 yard box waiting for a pass so he can finish. Sheva actually goes looking for the ball and also makes things happen he definitely sets up his fair share of goals as well.

Sheva's da man

if everyone is honest with themselves then the award should go to either Deco or Ricardo Carvalho...they were both integral parts of CL and Superliga Champions Porto, and were part of Portugal's run to the finals in the Euro. Sheva would be my third choice

Its just unfortunate Sheva is Ukrainian.

If he was playing even for the Czech Republic, then his chances would increase so much..

sorry to say so but i am farking honest with myself and i won't choose Deco. Deco play like sh*t in the final and i don't find him that great or maybe in the matches i saw him, he just happened to play badly. and also he is a cheating diver. sorry no Deco.

Even though Portugal reached the Euro 2004 final, Deco was not good at all, and in the final he was the worst player. Even Rui Costa was better. Plus the awards are usually given to a big name and Deco has just been well known for a year.

The award will go to one from Shevchenko, Henry, and Ronaldinho. If Milan beats Barca and Shev stars then that will be a big contribution as this is the match the whole world will be watching. Kaka is an outsider for the award but even he has a chance if he rips Barca apart like in the first game against Deportivo!

why? for one good season? sheva is clearly above these players and has shown it even in this last year. Carvalho to win the G B? i just name few player who didn't: BARESI- MALDINI. Enuff said. Carvalho is good but not even in the same planet, let apart the league.

Deco? he's a good player, not better than Rui Costa at his peak. I just tell you kakà is 5 times better. Let's not joke, i would understand Henry or Ronaldinho, but these names are frankly not G B quality

Not for one good season, but rather one good "Calender" year.

You have to understand that such awards are given to players who have played well for a given calender year, and strong performances in the Champion's League and major international tournaments (World Cup, Euro Championships) will further enhance the chances of winning.

Of course, there are past winners of this award who had only played well in a given calender year (some even in just a major tournament). And they can never be rated as the top 100 best ever players, like a certain Paolo Rossi back in 1982.

Just to add in a little secret: Jani acts like a girl everytime Shevchenko scores (understandable, but still funny!) :D

Deco is a good player yes but I don't think he deserves the award as he is not a thoroughly proven player. Although he has won the CL with Porto; that was only one successful season in Europe and does not signify much compared to the success of others. Besides, that CL year was a bit shrewd. All big teams seem to lose rather than small teams win. I know he has been good for Porto for quite sometime, but being in the Portuguese League doesn't really cut it. His CL success is his only major success in comparison to others, and that was only for once. Thus I believe he should wait to get the Golden Ball, and let the other players who have profusely proven fans that they are quality.

Nedved has tipped Sheva to win it this year!!! Hey Sheva should have won it way before now, but he sort of fell away the late 01-02 - early 02-03, but now he is back as good as he has ever been and I totally think he deserves it, but I really doubt he will win it. Even with several people tipping him, I very much doubt he will. BTW anyone catch the article today, Wenger was referring to overseas players that have arrived at Arsenal with performance enhancing drugs, Henry perhaps??

PRESS SURVEY - DECO: 'Sheva never misses'
12 October 2004 09:58

MILAN - Welcome to our presentation of what the Italian press are saying about Milan on Tuesday, October 12. 'La Gazzetta dello Sport' published an interview with Barcelona star Deco, who talked about the award for European Footballer of the Year and FIFA's World Footballer of the Year: 'I am not the only candidate. I rate [Thierry] Henry, Ronaldhino and [Andriy] Shevchenko. The most dangerous rival, however, has to be Shevchenko. He hardly ever misses a chance, either for Milan or Ukraine. Barcelona will face Milan in the Champions League, but it's not really Deco against Sheva. However, it's the encounter between the two strongest sides in the group.'

Fifa don't choose the winner. in their award it is the national team coaches that choose and they usually can come with completly hilarious choices while most just vote for the most hyped last year. France football magazine world player of the year is voted by journalists, they have a little better check on things at least.

As I see it usually team's success plays a big part in these awards, and Ukraine NT isn't exactly successful and although Milan won the Scudetto, it was not as grand as the CL for the journalists perhaps. So Sheva probably won't win in that sense, not because he doesn't deserve it. My best bet would probably be Deco taking the title home.

Deco doesn't deserve this award? Probably, but the award has also gone to some "undeserved" winners in the past. Remember Michael Owen? Paolo Rossi? Well I would obviously be delighted in seeing Sheva getting the award, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Deco ends up winning this.

Here's some flashback to a day in 1982, when I was still a young kid. :smileani: And I'll use a quote from Giovanni here. :grinser:

"They never counted for defenders like Brietner or Scirea, then this midget from Italia comes and claim to win it. This award is simply ridiculous, and I hope it will go to the right person next year. I can understand Platini or Rummenigge, but def not Rossi"

Paolo Rossi (winner in 1982) won the award based on performances in just THREE games (against Brasil, Poland and West Germany) in WC82.

From January to May 82 Rossi was serving a ban for match fixing, and after the World Cup finals he did phuck-all for Juventus for the rest of 1982. The award was only given to European born players back then, and if an Italian player had to win this award due Italy's success in the World Cup, then Gaetano Scirea would have been a more deserved winner. No wait, Scirea was a defender, and we all know defenders won't win.... :devf:

(Well, defenders like Franz Beckenbauer and Josef Masopust have won this award before, as did goalkeeper Lev Yashin, so it's not exactly true that defenders "won't win".)

In 1983, the award did go to the right person (Michel Platini), but I had lost confidence in this award back then when I was still a kid.

So, you can't really say Deco does not deserve this award, cause he certainly has done more (and played well many games) in 2004 (Portuguese League Champion, Champion's League Winner, Euro 2004 Finalists) than Rossi ever did in 1982 (3 good games at WC82). And thank god Germany won the World Cup at Italia 90, or we could have seen Salvatore "Toto" Schillaci a Golden Ball winner back in 1990. :eekani:

Agreed. As I said earlier in a previous post that defenders do not get as much recognition, which is absolute nonsense really because defense make up as much for the game as offense does. This golden ball thing doesn't really give recognition to those who have long deserved it, rather to 'flavour of the week' kind of players. And seeing the pattern, though I disagree, but Deco does seem likely to win it..
