Porto cap perfect year
Sunday, 12 December 2004
Pedro Emanuel's spot-kick, the 18th of a rollercoaster penalty shoot-out, ensured FC Porto hoisted the 2004 European/South American Cup following a goalless draw with CD Once Caldas in Yokohama.

Remarkable year
Porto hit the woodwork three times and had two goals disallowed in regulation time but seemed set to fall at the final hurdle when Maniche hit the crossbar from the spot and presented Jonathan Fabbro with a chance to win it for the Libertadores Cup holders. But the Colombian hit the post and it took until John Edwin García's penalty flew over the crossbar for Pedro Emanuel to complete a remarkable year for ten-man Porto, who had by then had Diego dismissed for goading the flamboyant Caldas goalkeeper Juan Carlos Henao after scoring.

Two changes
Porto, who won the UEFA Champions League in May, made just two changes from the side that defeated Chelsea FC in midweek to qualify for the last 16 of this season's competition. Víctor Fernández brought back goalkeeper Vítor Baía for Nuno and replaced Areias with fit-again Ricardo Costa at the back.

McCarthy denied
Maniche and Derlei both failed to last 90 minutes against Chelsea but were retained in the starting lineup and the former wasted no time in justiyfing Fernandez's decision. On seven minutes Maniche delivered a wonderful weighted pass down the left to the feet of Benni McCarthy, who won a free-kick. From the delivery, Derlei nodded down for McCarthy to roll the ball in at the far post, but the South African striker's celebrations were cut short by the offside flag.

Porto chances
Maniche drew a save from Henao before Luís Fabiano clipped a 17th-minute shot over the Caldas goalkeeper only to see the ball bounce back off the crossbar. Six minutes later Luís Fabiano crossed for Derlei, who headed over - but it seemed only a matter of time before the European side broke the deadlock.

Chaotic events
John Viáfara thundered into Ricardo Costa to give Porto a 40th-minute free-kick and set up the chaotic series of events which somehow failed to bring the game's first goal. Diego's free-kick was flicked on to the far post by Viáfara, Derlei followed in but could only scramble the ball up on to the crossbar and McCarthy lashed the ball over from close range.

Caldas break
But just as it seemed the proceedings were simply an exercise in keeping Porto at bay, Caldas broke with pace and created the finest move of the match. The outstanding Fabbro carried the ball forward before threading a pass inside the back-tracking Ricardo Costa for Viáfara, whose angled shot from the right whistled wide.

Offside flag
The second half brought more one-way traffic and Porto thought they had taken the lead on the hour when Maniche's shot was blocked but bounced through to McCarthy, who gleefully crashed the ball past an increasingly erratic Henao only for play to be pulled back for offside. McCarthy's hard luck continued when he took one touch 23 metres from goal but saw his venomous 66th-minute strike rattle the crossbar.

Wonderful stop
Watertight Caldas almost snatched the single goal their game plan required when De Nigris fell to ground under a challenge from Vítor Baía but Uruguayan referee Jorge Larrionda waved play on and although Ricardo Costa's thunderous downward header could have sealed victory as the 90 minutes drew to a close, Henao's wonderful stop forced extra time.

Baía replaced
Vítor Baía was floored reaching for a bouncing ball during extra-time and left the field for Nuno, but as Porto dominated without forcing any clear-cut chances, the replacement goalkeeper was not called into action until the dramatic shoot-out.
