I think so. I thought the following from www.goal.com would make interesting reading. My comment is the Alan from Ireland one. Not everyone thinks he deserves it but I do?
Your Views: Does Sheva Deserve The Ballon D'Or Award?

On Monday, Andriy Shevchenko won the most prestigious accolade for a single player currently given out on the planet. Did the AC Milan striker deserve it? This is what the Goal.com audience had to say...
Shevchenko is a worthy winner. He was instrumental for Milan in the Champions League victory and last year’s championship campaign. Not only is he a consistent scorer, but often his goals are spectacular, individual pieces of skill. He is a complete striker, and has proven that he can
perform at the highest levels with devastating consistency. He is a complete handful for even the world’s best defenders. In a Milan team fullof world class attackers he is almost always outstanding...that in itself is worth recognition considering we are talking about the likes of Inzaghi,
Crespo, Tomasson and Kaka. Shevchenko is currently the best striker in the world. Henry says Wenger? Henry has had little impact in the CL, as Arsenal’s woeful CL performances against the crème de la crème of Europe leaves much to be desired. What has Henry done outside of the premiership? He’s a good player, but call me when Arsenal & Henry achieve something outside of racking up a ton of goals against the likes of Fulham, Man City,(no disrespect intended) etc. Whether its Juve, Inter, Roma, Barca, Real or Bayern, Shevchenko is always outstanding, no matter how good the opposition!

Actually this question is not as simple as it sounds, for Sheva does deserve it but still - there are some players that deserve it more than him. Sheva was the top scorer in the Serie A last season with AC Milan, and his current form with the Italian giants this season is superb - I think these 2 factors make him deserve the Ballon D’or. But, if we look at Deco - he led Porto to be crowned in the Champions League, the Portuguese title, and led his country Portugal to be runners-up in Euro 2004, furthermore - his current from with Barca this season is - like Sheva - superb. So Deco fought on 4 fronts or at least 3 while Sheva only 1, for Ac Milan were eliminated in the quarter finals of last season’s Champions League and his national team Ukraine weren’t involved in anything! This is just an example to show that Deco deserved the award more than Sheva, and I also think Henry and Ronaldinho deserve it more than him.
Ali Al-Mumen, Kuwait
Sheva absolutely, positively deserves to win the Ballon D’OR. He is the most lethal striker in the game and to be able to score all those goals in Serie A, the best defensive league in the world is by far an amazing feat. Not only does he score with consistency for Milan but also does so with Ukraine. Ronaldinho is a great soccer player but all the hype is on his ball control and the way he does his fancy dribbles....that doesn’t win games. Deco also is a "good" soccer player but he’s no Sheva. If Totti played for a team like Milan or Juventus, then I could definitely see him in contention for this award.
Rocco
Yes Sheva deserve to win!! He’s the best forward of the world. Every weekend he plays against worlds best defenders and still he score’s a lot! Let Henry try that!! Ooh he tried, he failed(Juve). So Wenger must first think and then talk. They first have to win something in Europe!! Forza sheva!!
Roberto Nichela
Did he deserve it? Well there are many players who deserved it. My favorite was Ronaldinho, but honestly I think Deco "deserved" it. He won CL, and he was Euro Championship runner-up. I am disappointed with those media, who let you know who is the winner 7 days before time. Sheva is
An excellent player, I congratulate him.
Hasib, Bosnia
Without a doubt Shevchenko deserved the Ballon D’or. Over the past 18 months he has scored many goals in all competitions he has played in. Although he has often been a consistent goal scorer in the CL and Serie A, his goals for the Ukraine lately are proving to be crucial for qualification for the next World Cup. In a league (Serie A) that is often regarded as the most difficult to score goals, Shevchenko seems to make it look easy. Congratulations Sheva and Forza Milan!!
Giuseppe
Hheva deserved it for sure. He is the best football player in the world at now. We all love Sheva in turkey. He is simply fantastic.
Kerem-Turkey
While Sheva no doubt had a stellar year, in my opinion, the award should have gone to Barcelona’s Ronaldinho. The Brazilian may not have scored as many goals (he is not an out-and-out striker), but he is definitely a much more well rounded player offensively, and if one looks at the all-round Goals-Assist statistics, he dominated the very competitive La Liga hands down in the past season. His performances carried Barcelona through an incredible climb in the standings, not to mention all the little tricks and flicks that have put fun and excitement back into the European game. When was the last time we saw a player bring such an fresh injection of excitement into top-flight European football? In my opinion, although Sheva’s stats and performance were impressive, for a pure striker to be voted ahead of Ronaldinho’s achievements in the past year, it should take even more than what Sheva has done. In today’s game, it is extremely rare that we see a player that combines both outrageous skill, flair and results, and Ronaldinho definitely should have bee rewarded for this. The fact that Ronaldinho has come out publicly to congratulate Sheva immediately after the award and praise the other nominees (without tooting his own horn) also shows refreshing sportsmanship. He is a true breath of fresh air in today’s egotistical environment.
Zyad
Does Andriy Shevchenko deserve the Ballon D’Or? Absolutely! You cannot deny his accomplishments at the club level. Even so, I would have voted for Arsenal’s Thierry Henry ahead of Shevchenko. In addition to leading his club to an undefeated season, Henry dominated the English Premiership in a way that the other outstanding nominees (Shevchenko, Deco, Ronaldinho and Drobga) failed to do so in their respective leagues. Shevchenko was not the most deserving candidate for the Ballon D’Or. He is not, however, a bad choice.
Will Gibson-Canada
I believe that Andriy deserved this award for what he has done in the past 5 seasons. He has won many trophies with AC Milan. He was the reason why Milan won the Champions League (He even scored a goal in the final, which was unfairly disallowed). He was the first foreigner who became Serie A top striker in his debut season. He was the best league striker last year and guided Milan to the first Scudetto in 5 years. Also he scored hat-trick in Italia Super cup, which is a great achievement. And what the most important thing for Andriy and the people of Ukraine is, is that Ukraine hold 1st place in the qualifying group for the World Cup 2006 (Greece, Turkey and Denmark are in the group as well!)
Arsenty lavrenyuk, Scotland/Ukraine
I believe Shevchenkio deserved to win the Golden Ball after all he’s done for Milan and world football. He made rival clubs stand up and praise his performances. I would also like to add that Deco didn’t even deserve the second place I think Ronaldinho should have been 2nd placed while Henry 3rd placed. I always admired Shevchenko for he is a champion all clubs dream of. He is also a gentle man and a patriot. CONGRATULATIONS SHEVA.
Steven
Even as an AS Roma fan, id like to say that Shevchenko deserves this award more than any other player. True that the other players are great. He was the reason Milan got the better of Roma, scored 24 goals total to hand Milan the championship. But not only is one of the best teams in the
world so dependant upon his scoring abilities, but he also plays with the team and supplies other players on his team. He’s also been a talisman with the Ukraine which should be achieving some qualifications soon. Not forgetting Champions League 2002/2003.. ;).. I grudgingly admit he’s a great player. Next year hopefully Cassano or Totti will get it. haha.
Bashar Beiruti
Offcourse he deserves it. Milan became champion in the most difficult league, with Sheva as topscorer. Year before he won the champions league. Plus he is never arrogant like others such as Henry and Deco. Van Basten was never arrogant too and thus rightfully deserved the golden ball three times. For me, this is the first but not the last for sheva!
Wainando
My answer is simple: no. Merely for the fact that Shevchenko only won the Serie A with Milan, yet Henry scored many, MANY more goals than Shevcehnko, and went unbeaten least season. An unbeaten season surely results in some award..?
>P0thead
Deco, Ronaldinho, Henry and Zagorakis had no chance, since they are not promoted by Berlusconi’s media.
Nikos
As a Ukrainian I can only support the award. However, I am not supporting Shevchenko simply because I am a Ukrainian. There are several reasons why I am of such opinion. First of all, talking of his individual merits and more on an accrual basis rather than considering only the going year: he has scored 24 goals in Serie A three times in 5 seasons, twice being the top scorer of the league; in a little over than 5 years in the club he has reached the third top scorer in the club’s 105 year history and this in the third millennium, not in the early 20th century when football was easier to score; he is currently in top 10 of the playing CL players; he has displayed incredible consistency throughout his career without deep pits even after recovery from knee surgery. Secondly, talking of his public merits: because of him Ukraine has Serie A run on public television for the 5th year; he has made half of Ukraine love football and that is a lot of people, myself one of them. So rightly done, and those who did not get it this time should remember one simple rule: there’s always room on the top!
Sergiy Sergiyenko
Of course Sheva deserves it! That’s another player in Serie A to win, and next year it will belong to super Zlatan Ibrahimovic!
Frankie Videtta
In my opinion Ronaldinho should have won the award, although Shevchenko has been a key figure in Milan’s Scudetto win last year, I don’t think he has done what Ronaldinho has done to football. You cannot deny that both are extremely good players, but in my opinion Ronaldinho has revolutionized football, everytime he plays he does something beautiful with the ball, in every game, and he took a Barcelona that was something like 11 or 10 in the league last year, and single-handedly took them to 2 place. This year he has a lot of good players around him, like Deco, Eto’o, or Xavi, but he still stands out. He also won the World Cup in 2002. I don’t think that Shevchenko could single handedly do what Ronaldinho did with Barcelona. Also at least for me is much more entertaining to watch Ronaldinho play than Shevchenko, as Ronaldinho has better technique and handle of the ball.
Carlos- Caracas,Venezuela
Yes he deserves it. Shevchenko is currently the most effective player, he scores from only a chance while other players need many chances to score and statistics of teams other than Milan show that. He doesn’t provide a good show but gives a good effect and that’s what makes a superb player, result not the show because it isn’t a circus.
Mohammed
Call me unreasonable, but I don’t think Sheva deserves it. What has Sheva done to deserve the ballon d’or this year, more than any other year? I fully agree that he has stepped up half a notch this season, and that he is one of the greatest forwards right now, but that just doesn’t cut it to be the best! Sure he won the Scudetto, I will give it to him, that’s an achievement but apart from that, there is nothing outstanding... Granted that is a major accomplishment, he was not single handed in his quest for it. On the international level he has not done anything... Though I don’t expect him to make Ukraine the number one team on the planet, he could at least raise their rankings (which he hasn’t). Looking at the voting in this case, I would at the least give the award to Thierry Henry who at least won the double with Arsenal, became highest scorer in England, and was part of an Arsenal that went undefeated until earlier this season. Even though he is criticized on an International level, France still went to Euro 2004 only to lose late to Greece. I have come to the conclusion that the only reason Sheva got it is because of Milan’s success in the season prior to this season, which is not what the award is based on, and the fact that the judges couldn’t give it to him last season due to his injury (which did go into this season for a little bit) and more importantly the fact that Nedved was just carrying the Juventus squad in all competitions (hop on Juve). He gets this award, in a sense out of pity: for the fact that he plays for Ukraine, the fact that his recent (past month NOT YEAR) results have been good (Ukraine beat Turkey, Milan climb the charts) the fact that he won the champions league in the season prior, and the fact that he may not be able to win it ever again if not. If the world was a fairer place, this award would have gone to Ronaldinho, even though his trophy case in the last season was empty. Ronaldinho again and again proved he was the best player, by ridiculing opposition with his cheeky skills but at the same time leading Barcelona back to the top spots of one of the most difficult leagues of the world, la liga. Ronaldinho single handedly took Barca from the lower half of the tables in Spain, and put them into the Champions League, which they could even win this season. Look at Barcelona now; they are better than Milan as they proved in the Champions League clash thanks to Ronaldinho. If not him, at least give the award to Henry, who did twice what Shevchenko did. In no way would I ever put Henry in FOURTH PLACE! Henry most definitely did better than Shevcheko and Deco, who should have been given the third position. If I were the judge I would give Shevchenko a fourth place, a player of the month award, and wish him better luck for this season. Ronaldinho is the best. Henry holds the credentials. Deco is cheeks and will not win it even though he is great. Sheva should have to settle for less.
