Yes the 2004 is best out of those, but no team EVER beats the 1992 one, that team was unstoppable.

The best team would have to be the 2004 team. It is basically the same team that won the 2003 CL and which sould have won the 2004 CL.
Like Kris said, know one will beat the teams in the early 90s.
In my openion today's squad is also better the one coached by Sacchi, in the sense that the resserves are a lot better (at least on paper). When you see today's reserves there are people like Stam, Inzaghi, Tomasson, Rui, Ambrosini, they all play in their national teams.
give our current team a couple of more years and we will beat the early 90's team... thats what i think

I like Lorenzo's method of comparison, so I'll do the same (I base my opinion on that years performance, not their whole careers)

Simply put, I think last years side was better than both the others ('99 really wasn't up to the standard tbh).
As for comparisons with the early 90s side, I think the current squad can become (if it isn't already) comparable to that side (as in their equals). The reason I say this is because we have all the qualities needed to dominate football like that side did. Also note, last year (pretty much the same squad as this year) set new records domestically and the year before (again, its the same generation as the current squad), the side not only won CL and Coppa (previously the only cup Berlu hadn't had in his grasp), but they set records in winning the CL, by not only beating almost all of the favourites in the tournament, but beating city rivals in the semis and beating the old lady in the final, setting new records in the achievements of Italian clubs in the CL.
Also, the current side is better technically than the early 90s side (this has been stated not only by the players from that generation, but from the coach), but it is not as good tactically (again, this has been noted by players and the coach)

Basically the nucleus of the team.
Weah was primarily the main man in attack, partnered by either Baggio, Simone or Di Canio.
Savicevic is the main playmaker for this team & Boban only played 13 games that year.
1998/1999 :

Guglielminpietro-----Giunti----Albertini-----Helveg
-------Maldini------Costacurta----Chamot------
---------------------Abbiati-------------------

JDT played more games & scored more goals than Inzaghi in 2004 ;)
The 2004 team is the best among the 3, but the best Milan side is still Sacchi's Milan :proud:
Picking players from only those three squads I get this favourite 11 (Not balanced)
------------Weah-Sheva
----------------Kaka
Savicevic-Albertini-Boban-Donadoni
-------Maldini-Baresi-Nesta
---------------Dida
96: Very strong midfield and defence
99: Strong attack, but generally the weakest of the 3 squads by far (more cred to Zacc for winning a scudetto with the likes of Helveg, Guinti and Guly in the starting 11  )
04: Very strong attack and defence, midfield with potential but not up to 96 levels yet
Giunti was not in the starting 11 in 1999, centre midfield was composed by Albertini and Ambrosini. (He was 21 that year). As for Chamot he joined us in January 2000 with Jose Mari.
In my openion today's squad is also better the one coached by Sacchi, in the sense that the resserves are a lot better (at least on paper). When you see today's reserves there are people like Stam, Inzaghi, Tomasson, Rui, Ambrosini, they all play in their national teams.
The old ealry 90s squad had a bench full of internationals, some where starters in the Italian national team.

Forgot bout the starter of back 3.

Not equal...!!
'92 so awesome but the last 3 teams just like the others best club world wide.
95/96 : there's Juventus or Ajax
98/99 : ManU (treble), Madrid, Muenchen (honestly, Milan was nothing)
03/04 : Lost in quarter final in CL ( Barca, Arsenal, Valencia also good)
and '92 : The Dream Team ==> all teams behind us
Perfetto !!

Stats for 1995/96 season (Savicevic vs Boban)
Savicevic, played 23, 6 goals
Boban, played 13, 3 goals
Think again now :smileani:
Ambro for Giunti?
Giunti played more matches as starter than ambro.
Stats for 1998/99 season (Giunti vs Ambrosini)
Giunti, who only joined Milan in the January 99 transfer window played 8 games (6 for Milan, 2 for Parma) and scored ZERO.
Ambrosini played 26 games (all for Milan) and scored 1 goal.
Forgot bout the starter of back 3.
Now I remeber, that would be :
----Maldini-----Chamot-----Sala-----
Billy wasn't a starter!!
Your memory failed you again :grinser: Chamot wasn't even on our roster that year.
Defender stats
Maldini, played 31, 1 goal
Costacurta, played 29, no goals
Sala, played 24, no goals
If you have mistaken Ayala for Chamot, Ayala played only 10 games that season.

After Giunti joined in Milan, I didnt see Ambro play along with albertini in central midfield for more matches than giunti did (except giunti was injured).
And with giunti along albertini, Milan could beat Lazio in Serie A campaign.
I remember Milan adrift 13 points of Lazio. But in the end, MIlan be the champ with 7 or 8 matches won streak.

Ok...Savicevic play more matches than Boban.
But I dont think Savicevic wasn't the playmaker.
He's the striker or left side in midfield
He oftened played on the right of midfield, not the left (Donadoni played on the left), but it's because that turd Capello wanted him to. There were times where he drifted from the right to a more central position to take up the playmaking responisibilities, with Panucci doing the overlapping runs down the right. Watch the highlights of the #15 again.
Savicevic never played in as a striker in 95/96 (In 93/94 he played in a more advanced position, but not in 95/96). Capello rotated playing time among the 4 strikers that resulted in everyone of them playing 20+ games.
Strikers Stats for 95/96
George Weah, played 26, 11 goals
Roby Baggio, played 28, 7 goals
Marco Simone, played 27, 8 goals
Paolo Di Canio, played 22, 5 goals

Giunti joined in Jan 99 after the winter transfer season, and there were 20 more games left to play. He only played in SIX, scoring ZERO & assisting ZERO. In that 7 game winning streak, Giunti only had a stellar game against his old club Parma (the 1st of the 7), and Boban took over from there.
Ambrosini not only played more games than Giunti, but he also scored the 1st goal in that famous 3-2 win over Sampdoria (the 4th win of the 7)
To include Giunti over Ambrosini in your starting XI for 98/99 is like putting Brocchi over Gattuso :devf:

I have to admit, Ilgenio, when it comes to stats, I think you have more than anyone ;)
I'm glad to see the argument (discussion may be a better word) is about football (unlike most others of late)
Ok, my opinion (based on memory and use of some of the stats provided)...
Savicevic did do a lot of work in the playmaking department, but I don't think he can be defined as the playmaker of the side. Due to the creative force we had in the side (Boban, Savicevic, Donadoni, Albertini and even Baggio) to simply call one the playmaker of the side is nigh impossible. Its like the current Milan, we have Pirlo, Seedorf, Kaka, Rui, Dhorasoo and others and although its possible to say Pirlo is the playmaker, Kaka and Seedorf and others also act as playmakers a lot of the time and so if an argument was to occur about who the playmaker is, I think everyone would be wrong (to say that a single player is the playmaker) and everyone would be right (as each player acts as a playmaker at one point or another).
Sorry Peachtot, but I agree with Ilgenio about Ambro and Giunti. I do think Ambro played more that season. In fact, I just looked at the sides mentioned and I'm sure Guly played on the right for us (maybe I'm wrong).
As for the stats thing, Ilgenio, you make a lot of your arguments based on the stats, but I don't think its a brilliant idea to rely on them. At the end of the day, players may do better than stats show. The best example is Weah, as in 95/96, he was incredible and earned a number of awards for his efforts. However, as a forward, many might look at his goalscoring stats which say 11 goals in 26 matches which isn't too spectacular and judge him to have not been too great, even though those who remember him that year, clearly know that saying such a thing is rubbish.
btw, great discussion here guys :)

The term playmaker now is being overused by many journalists, pundits, fans alike and so the question is: What is a playmaker? In Italy, Pirlo plays in a deeper regista (movie director) position, and Italy journalists consider a regista as a playmaker. Totti plays in a more advance mezzapunta/trequartista/fantasista position and he's also being labelled a playmaker.
So being the statistician that I am, I'll go by assists stats ;) The one with the most assists is the playmaker of the team ;)
But again, assist stats can be deceiving. Due to the inconsitency of various sources in keeping stats for assists (some credited an assist to a player who has won a PK/FK for his team, and the resulting setpiece is duly converted, some don't. Some credit an assist to the assistant even if the pass was a deflected off an opponent, some don't), someone like Inzaghi can lead the assist charts if he can win 20 PKs a season ;) Having said that, we are not Rubentus, so it's unlikely the refs will award 20 PKs in our favor :devf:

Zac's blue-eyed boy Helveg :yuck: played on the right that season. Ziege started the season as our left wingman, before being replaced by Guly in the mid season.

It's an occupational hazard. I work in a highly competitve, pressured and result oriented company, and our performances are all tracked by stats & figures ;) The Kakas, Shevchenkos, Savicevics are valued more highly than the Gattusos. Of course, Gattuso may not have the attacking stats to back him up but Milan fans know his value to the team. To be fair to the likes of Gattuso & denfensive players, they should be judged more on their tackles won and passes intercepted. Unfortunately, I don't compile defensive stats ;)
The real world can be liken to football club, to stay competitive, you have to have the figures & results to prove yourself, under-perform and you're gone, regardless if you're a loyal servant. It's cruel, yet it's reality. There are no sentiments in football or in any organisation if you want to stay competitive, and Milan IS a competitive club

I think your point is valid, in asking the question to define a playmaker. At the end of the day, many people all have different definitions and in modern football it is harder to define a specific position/role to a player than ever before. The debate you and Peachtot have had about who our playmaker was has been had before by Kris and Nadir, where they argued whether or not Albertini was a playmaker or not. I've decided that nowerdays, I'm not going to worry too much about defining a players specific position, but rather judge them on their overall contribution.
Zac's blue-eyed boy Helveg :yuck: played on the right that season. Ziege started the season as our left wingman, before being replaced by Guly in the mid season.
yeah, actually I think your right there, fair enough. I'm glad Guly had one successful season with us before becoming an Inter reject :D

This has been proven by those who decide the player of the year awards. I think its important to consider the situation. In an industry such as working in the stock market, stats may be of the greatest importance of all, as the whole industry revolves around them. However, other industries, like the at industry doesn't rely on stats at all (other than maybe working out how much a piece is worth), but "subjective" opinions are vital. Football is an industry where I think its good to use stats to backup an argument, but its important to subjectively value a players worth, so that its possible to take into consideration their importance and not miss something that stats may not pick up (such as Gattuso's importance defensively).
The real world can be liken to football club, to stay competitive, you have to have the figures & results to prove yourself, under-perform and you're gone, regardless if you're a loyal servant. Its true that in business, no matter how good you are, you need firm concrete proof of your quality. However, to be competitive you need quality from the workforce. A way to judge employees is to look at their stats in different areas of their job, but many in the world succeed through showing their ability and importance to management, showing there is more than one way to impress and be 'competitive'. My point, there is more than one way to skin a cat ;)
If all discussions were as curtious as this, we would not need any mods :)

Nice stats.
So, donandoni in left side, savicevic in the right one and roby or simone play alongside with weah upfront.
Perhaps, cause Boban impressed me so much than make me forgot 95/96 he was in bench mostly.

Now, give me some help.
Plz check, after Giunti joined Milan (when there's only 20 matches left), was Giunti play as starter more than Ambro?
Then, did he got serious injury that make him only watch milan matches?
Cause I'm convince after he joined, Milan got new energy and played much better.
To include Giunti over Ambrosini in your starting XI for 98/99 is like putting Brocchi over Gattuso :devf:
No, totally different.
Giunti ain't a tenacious midfielder.
Ambro just more like gattuso, the destroyer.
I think Giunti can maintain and play posession better than ambro.
He had good long pass.
Remind me to Pirlo right now(of course in less skala)
That made MIlan much better after the winter break.

the reason Milan played so well after the winter break was due to a number of reasons. The most obvious being Boban was brought into the side (if I remember correctly, he was injured during the first half of the season) and also Abbiati was discovered (after Rossi's ban), as well as other players (like Leonardo) performing more and more consistently.
Also, other factors like the team was finally playing as a unit (even players like Guly started performing well) and the defence was actually performing more solidly also helped.
Giunti played reasonably well, but he wasn't a major factor in our success. I'm quite sure he was very much a squad player rather than being an integral part of the side.
Ilgenio, do you have the stats to back up my points, because I'm quite certain I'm not actually wrong and this is a situation stats could be useful ;)
You're right Dev. Giunti was very much a squad player. But the reason why Milan did better after the winter break was Zac ditching his favored 3-4-3 to a 3-4-1-2 formation. The switch was due to an injury to Leonardo, and there wasn't a good enough player to play in the 3rd attacker position (Ganz, Morfeo and even :eekani: Guly :eekani: was tried in attack). So Zac played Boban in his favored playmaker position instead of a central midfielder, and relieved Zorro of defensive responsibilites. The rest is history. ;)
And Dev, Boban had a relatively injury-free season that year :D He played 27 games in total and in the 1st half of the season, often played in central midfield. Zac was still experimenting his best central midfield pairing and has tinkered with Albertini + Boban, Max + Boban, Albertini + Max, and finally settled on #4 & #23 :bri: due to Boban's defensive liabilities in central midfield ;) The 3 midfielders who played the most games were Albertini (29 games), Boban (27 games) & Ambrosini (26 games). Hardly any surprises here :nana:
Peach, I don't understand your facisnation for Giunti :v46: He was only a squad player and played only 6 games. Of that famous 7 games winning streak, Giunti only played well in the match against Parma. He was only used again in the 4-0 blowout against relegated Empoli, while Ambro played the full 90 minutes in key matches against Sampdoria, Rubentus and the final game against Perugia.

Fair enough, it is pretty hard to memorise the various systems and players used during that season.
I thought Boban was injured during the first half of that season because he was very quiet, but I decided to look it up and your right. I definately remember that after the tactical switches (notably Boban and the improvements defensively which were the result of changes in the midfield as well) that we improved and actually played like Champions.
thanks for clearing it up

All in my memories, there's some special part for giunti after the winter transfer policy.
Milan played better with him. And milan can control the vital part, the midfield itself.
With ambro along with albertini, our 2 midfielders more become tenacious midfielder who always fight to collect the ball but couldn't maintain the ball nor played possesion football.
That make me pick giunti in my team instead of ambro.
Maybe you think, There's some bad sector in my memories   , but i enjoyed milan play with albertini and giunti plus boban as trequarista.
