Keane on musical theatre
Friday, 14 January 2005
Old wounds may be reopened as a musical based upon the Republic of Ireland's ill-fated 2002 FIFA World Cup campaign prepares to open in Dublin. 'I, Keano', which debuts at the Olympia Theatre on Tuesday 8 February, is a musical interpretation of the row over Saipan's training facilities between Manchester United FC captain Roy Keane and then Ireland manager Mick McCarthy which saw the player abandon his team-mates and head home without kicking a ball in anger. The show's blurb describes how "an ancient federation sends a legion to an island to prepare for a momentous war" with "Keano, their greatest warrior" who "has a passion for perfection exceeded only by his fierce and unpredictable temper". It does not take a genius to work out who Macartacus (McCarthy), Quinnus (Niall Quinn) and Packie Bonnerus (goalkeeping coach Pat Bonner) are, while the central theme of the play is said to be the way Keano is "torn between the conflicting advice of the Scottish dolphin god Fergie (Sir Alex Ferguson) and the tap-dancing wood nymph Dunphia (Keane's biographer, Eamon Dunphy)." The show goes under the unforgettable tag-line: "He came, he saw, he went home."
