In UCL game of Barca-Chelski at Nou Camp, I heard abt Mourinho's attitude towards it... IMO, he's too arrogant and can't accept the reality happened.:rotfl:

He is arrogant, but he also know his worth...

IMO Barca's atacking was without teeth entire first half and even the second when Drogba was sent off.... only when El Tanque was subed in everyting a bit changed.... those two defencive walls [4 - 4] and Duff in the front was one of the greatest football tactics I have ever seen... that was magnificebt to stare at 'ski defence... they were irresistable... IMO if Barca wont do anything to change it's own tactics 'ski will go through...

Personally I reckon Mourinho is kinda queer personality but he has tough principle...

Its smart from Mourinho, he's taking all the attention away from the players and putting on himself and the officials.

Given the way the match turned (Drogba's sending off) all he has to do is suggest something was wrong and he knows a lot of journalists and fans will put 2 + 2 together and make 50 :D

Jose, is class, brilliant tactician and man manager. What he did after the barca game was brilliant, he put himself in the fireing line with the officials and took all the heat off the players. The media are convinced they have finally gotten their pound of flesh from Jose but really he is the one laughing as not one of them has mentioned the match or players... Job done Jose, and very well done indeed. He is also manufacturing a way to get the ref he wants for the return leg which i think is just pure genius...

Also, SRFC, notice your a rovers fan and part of the ultras site. Fair play brother, one myself, used to play for the leinster senior side a few years back...

exactly, you can really see where the kick and rush comes unstuck against teams that put so much more into holding posession of the ball. as the great Arigo once said, "teams can't hurt you when they dont have the ball"

Stefan
28-02-2005, 09:23
And that counts for the inter game last night as well. They may have had more chances than us, but we controlled the ball when it really mattered in the key parts of the match. In the last 10 minutes, despite having so many attacking players on the pitch, they could hardly get the ball off us!

A swedish newspaper today said that Jose is to Football what Ali was to boxing. That is IMO pushing it a bit, but they have a point. Jose is talanted and has a big, loud, controversial and entertaining mouth that plays right into the hands of the media. Chelsea are certainly profiting from all his controversies as they get more media attention than they would have otherwise.

I am not suggesting this formula for other teams, but it seems to work for Chelsea. When they are more established in the top of European football, I am sure they will tone down a bit.

Personally I don't care either way.

Mourinho really pisses me off. He is so over confident. I will be so happy when chelsea get knocked out of the CL by Barca.

I want them to beat Barca, then they can get knocked out by the winners of the Milan - Utd game

Im not sure if any of the none English fans saw it but he actually got sent off yesterday for gesturing at the Liverpool fans in the league cup final. It was a reckless thing to do but quite funny to watch, when Chelsea equalised (luckily) he walked along the touchline with his finger to his mouth telling them to shut up  :D

Very good point iregk. I think last Wednesday proved that their league is all about glamour and image, while Serie A is about quality!

and yet Chelsea performance at Barca was nothing glamorous, instead a solid tactical defensive display that but for a dubious red card for Drogba would have earnt an away win in the Nou Camp, a place even Milan struggled.

The ref lost the match for Chelsea and I do firmly believe if it had of stayed 11-11 Chelsea would have won. Barca are over rated and will not win the CL for one reason, they are woeful at the back. I actually fancy Chelsea to go through in that game. Interesting Styles the confidence showing at Chelsea being knocked out, they have a much smaller mountain to climb than United!!!!

Incedentally Stez, Chelsea are the only english team that at times play a european brand of football...

Incedentally Stez, Chelsea are the only english team that at times play a european brand of football...

I think they find it easier to switch styles than the other English teams, largely because of the size and versatility of their squad. I said at the start of the season that they can now match Milan at the top of the tree as far as balance and quality go, fortunately Milan still have the edge becuase of their experience

Utd have been trying to change since the signing of Veron but could never get the balance right and Arsenal simply dont have the squad, beyond their first 11 or so the quality drops rapidly.

Arsenals main problem is that they try to play the kick and rush football of the premiership in europe, when you come up against teams that keep the ball such as bayern did, that doesn't work... Their second main problem is that ever since Arsene Wenger took over Arsenal just do not have in any game a plan b. When plan a blows up in their face they collapse with no back up plan... in Europe you need a plan b and c...

As for united, I think their main problem is genuine class. A lot of their players are great in the premiership but how many have the genuine class to make it into the Real Milan squads etc... now before you answer that take off the united tinted glasses and be honest.

Their second main problem is that ever since Arsene Wenger took over Arsenal just do not have in any game a plan b. When plan a blows up in their face they collapse with no back up plan... in Europe you need a plan b and c...

Its a strange situation for them as almost all their players were brought up with continental styles, only Campbell and Cole are full Premiership products. I do think it would have been a completely different story if they had played at bayern too, Campbell is as important to them as Henry or Vieira, without him their defence has no leadership.

As for united, I think their main problem is genuine class. A lot of their players are great in the premiership but how many have the genuine class to make it into the Real Milan squads etc... now before you answer that take off the united tinted glasses and be honest.

Utds main problem is transitional, players are reaching the end of their careers like Keane, Giggs, Scholes etc at the same time the youngsters in the squad like Rooney, Ronaldo and Fletcher have undoubted talent but lack experience.

There arent many players at Utd of genuine quality who fit into that middle bracket, i'd say only Rio, Heinze and Ruud are genuine quality and at their peak (or near it) the rest are either still learning or past their peak years.

That said, there is still enough to win the European Cup with a bit of luck, for example Keano doesnt quite have the legs now but when he does play at his best he is still a top midfielder, Rooney has the inconsistency of youth but on his good days (which are increasingly common) he can score from anywhere, and often does  if all the parts come together on the same day the side is still a match for anyone.........

iregk
28-02-2005, 16:08
I know what your saying and understand the transitional gap and yes you are correct. the forementioned players are coming to the end of the road and there seems to be very little middle ground currently on the offer. however taking some of the players Ronaldo I do believe is a very over rated player and really needs to start learning how to best use the ball rather than how many tricks to squeeze in. Rooney, just needs time a luxury not really given in england but hopefully that will change with him. Fletcher I just dont think has it and never will. Another Nicky Butt, nothing more.

The main problem going forward for united is defence, they need a settled keeper, and 2 world class defenders (a right full and a center half). Rio again is over rated. He is a good defender but he is not the world class talent everyone makes out. Best defender by a mile in england is John Terry. Heinze is simply class. But the main areas are right and center of the defence thats the weak links....

i think the problem with united is that they make the wrong signings, first of all they should cut the crap and sign a world class goal keeper, the only thing that made united a power house in europe in the 90's wasnt beckham or cantona or etc it was shmeichel ... i think they should sign some1 like frey, instead of spending good amounts of money on useless players like kleberson and fortune etc... when u sign a player u have to be 100% sure hell succeed with ur club (this is why i like milan alot) ... another postiion they should reinforce is the DM position, as a matter of fact fergie should face reality for once and change his tactics, enough with the traditional english midfield thats on one lne, he should immitate milan like chelsea have (or atleast tried to change the whole midfield structure) ... i think he should sell/bench giggs and add a DM that can start plays from the back like pirlo, they should have a tough guy in there and a backup DM that can start plays, as well as a winger like ronaldo and a OM that can help on the left flank, i dont understand what happened to oshea, i would use him right now, u need attacking fullbacks in todays game, ferdinand and another solid CB should join unless heinze is doing well (i dont like his game)

Ronaldo is very inconsistent but he has just turned 20, most players at that age are inconsistent to a degree and wingers tend to suffer more than most. Giggs at 20 was just as inconsistent but people forget it because its 10 years ago. Rooney certainly needs time and i think he'll get it. If he gets 20 goals this season then thats a great start for a kid at a top club, hes had the burden of being a lone striker for 2 months and he responded brilliantly. The real pressure will be 2006 when he has to become Englands saviour again  As for Fletcher i think he just needs to bulk up a bit, he has vision and a great range of passing and alongside a ballwinner he could be a great player for Utd

i think the problem with united is that they make the wrong signings, first of all they should cut the crap and sign a world class goal keeper,

easier said than done, im afraid. Frey will most likely join Inter, beyond him how many world class keepers are available? Buffon, Dida, Cassillas etc are going nowhere.

instead of spending good amounts of money on useless players like kleberson and fortune etc... when u sign a player u have to be 100% sure hell succeed with ur club

again, its just not that easy. The players you've mentioned were brought in to bolster the squad and maybe develop, not replace first teamers. With that in mind buying Fortune (a solid versatile player) for £2.5m is a far better buy than the £27m that went on Veron.

as a matter of fact fergie should face reality for once and change his tactics, enough with the traditional english midfield thats on one lne, he should immitate milan like chelsea have

its strange you'd say that because we have hardly played traditional English 4-4-2 since Veron was signed. Utd have tended to play variations of 4-5-1 over the past 4-5 years and there have been many calls amongst Utd fans to return to our traditions and play 4-4-2 again :D

Main thing is that we never start developing the same kind of attitude of our team like Maurinho is doing with Chelsea. Humility is a hard virtue to come by.

Back to the subject now :D

I think the reason Mourinho is acting so arrogant is simply to instill confidence in his squad. Unlike almost every other big European team, Chelsea's key players have never won anything in their careers  before the league cup win the biggest thing Lampard had won was a youth cup at West Ham :dielaugh: Terry, Duff, Robben etc are all the same.

Chelsea as a team last won the league 50 years ago and they tend to bottle it when they get close...........

iregk
01-03-2005, 14:04
I fully agree Stez on the arrogance part installing confidence in the players. also a factor i think is that he has had too much success too early which gave him reason to be arrogant. In his few years look at the cups he has one, he has every reason to be confident and a shade arrogant so I dont think that helped. Maybe if he had to slog it out for a few years before winning anything he may have been different.

Stezagud
01-03-2005, 17:23
yeah success has certainly played its part, it always seems a bit like an act though, in fact, it reminds me of Del Boy at times :D

I remember reading something at the start of the season (cant remember which player gave the interview) apparently Mourinho spent most of pre-season constantly reminding the Chelsea players that he had won everything and they had won nothing, and that being at Chelsea and reaching semi-finals will mean nothing at the end of their careers :D

Milan vs Chelsea would be a fantastic clash, with full squads available it would be a meeting of the 2 most balanced sides arround

Tactically they are perhaps the best equiped side to take on Milan, with a massive emphasis put on not conceding as they know no team can contain the Duff -Robben - Drogba combo for 90 minutes  Milan would still have the edge of course :D but it would be a real nerve jangler :stress:

I hate Mourinho. Coaches who have won MUCH MORE than he did wasnt even this arrogant. There are two types of arrogance - 1) arrogance with class, 2) arrogance with stupidity. Mourinho's the second type.

Stezagud
16-03-2005, 12:30
i dont think he is stupid at all ;) Think about it, if someone asked you to name one thing about Chelsea how many people do you believe would think of a players name before his?

He is taking all the external pressure away from the players and letting them concentrate on the playing side of it.

Also, at a club like that where the squad is only recently assembled and the wealth available is of unlike anything we've seen before there is a massive risk that it could easily implode with clashes of ego's and player power ( like a certain Madrid team :D )
He has managed to control them and even mould a great team ethic, of course its helped by having born leaders like Terry but it is still a fantastic achievement.

Not stupid - stupid (which makes it LITERALLY stupid), but he's more of a classless arrogant man. I think other coaches which has more calibre than he deserves all the attention hes getting more than he does but the fact that they dont SEEK it makes them more respectable than MourningMourinho.

Not to forget cheating on the starting lineups again and again, as well as refusing to attend the press conference again and again.. :fero:

SAF is a jerk, but he is not an ASS. he congratulates the opponents when he loses. he is a good example for mourinho to learn from. and only when a person can handle victories AND defeats, will he be mature.

Point taken yet you see other coaches revitilizing other players but do not get the credit mourinho does for what he did. Besides, I REALLY loathed the way Porto played that UEFA Cup final - they dived every five seconds, it was just terrible!

On the contrary, many managers are given too much credit without really having done anything.
Mourinho is nothing like the 'mastermind' that the press make him out to be, but he is a very very good manager. He has got a bunch of players who hardly played a lot of games together before this season, to perform as a brilliant team. I don't think he is a great talent spotter or anything. But he gets the maximum amount out of each of his players. And there are not many managers in the world who can do that.

In fact, he seems very similar to another "arrogant" manager who is loathed around the world. ;)

There are quite a few managers who have made this point, David Moyes and Sam Allardyce being 2 good examples. Their achievements, considering the funds they have available and the quality and size of squads they work with are just as impressive as Mourinho, only on a smaller scale.

I REALLY loathed the way Porto played that UEFA Cup final - they dived every five seconds, it was just terrible!

I remember it well, Utd had to put up with 2 legs of none stop diving  they got more than there fair share of luck too, the decision to disallow Scholes' goal for offside was so bad it was almost criminal  (3 people were playing him onside  )

These are the sort of things that smaller sides need to win big trophies though, remember Greece in Euro 2004? what they did wasnt pretty but it was effective and with the players they had it was what they had to do..

In fact, he seems very similar to another "arrogant" manager who is loathed around the world.

There are similarities no doubt about it :D

The guy he reminds me most of though is Brian Clough, the biggest difference though is that Clough was extremely arrogant but hated cheats, he even banned his players from disputing any decision the ref gave no matter how wrong it was ;)

Arrogance is necessary. You wouldn't be able to convince the players that they are the best unless you project that image yourself. An arrogant team will believe that they can pull off a result against anybody at any time and under any conditions. The blame culture is virtually eliminated with that approach. That is the sign of a team that is fully committed and fight till the very end to justify that belief.

Wenger tried that approach but failed to impose himself as someone who has complete control over his players. So even though the Arsenal players have lots of confidence, they do not have the bloody-mindedness.

As sad as I am about Chelsea's millions and freakish run of wins through drab, defensive football, I admit that Mourinho is on the right track.

P.S. And I know what I am talking about. I use the same approach in my life. I have failed many a job interview because of that, because the companies are looking for a humble, docile employee who doesn't ask any questions, works overtime without extra pay, etc, etc.. But to keep yourself going, and to have confidence in your abilities, the arrogant approach is essential.

Stezagud

yeah, i agree that it certainly is a fantastic tool for a manager to be able to use. As you say, it makes a massive difference if you know you can do something rather than just hoping or thinking you can.

But since that is how I am, I can't change it. :)
