This is our whole team of that scudetto..how could we manage to beat Lazio and win a Scudetto with Beloufa, Ziege, Ngotty, Maini, Giunti, Coco and Sala...It's incredible..Lazio was packed with world class players at their best such as Vieri, Nedved, Crespo and many others..except few real great players that Milan team was quite average IMO, but found an incredible enthusiasm which grew every week more.. just scroll down and you'll have an idea of what i mean..GUGLIELMINPIETRO jeez what a player : :dazed: :D

the secret back then was Guly's crosses and bierhoff headers if i do remember correctly.
:p286: :p286:
boban maldini and abbiati were the key to winning that scudetto
Bierhoff scored 20 goals that season and 15 were from headers :eekani:
And of the 5 non header goals, 2 were PKs :D
PS: Gio, Crespo was still with Parma then. But it was still an amazing feat to overturn a 6 point deficit after the goalless draw with Lazio at the Olimpico in Week 27. Milan won the final 7 games from Week 28 to Week 34 and the rest is history
both Guly and Sala were voted into the Serie A team of the year that season
I guess we had some quality players like Boban and Maldini and a lot of one-season-wonders whose form happened to coincide. :)
It is impossible not to admire Zacc for his achievement that season
Whatever happened to Rabito? There was a lot of hope swirling around him back then. As for that scudetto, I suppose it all came down to the stars aligning just right...and the presense of legendary Michelin Man Ibu Ba. He has powers we still haven't figured out yet! ;)
That scudetto re launched Maldini, Costacurta, Weah and Albertini and launched Ambrosini and Abbiati. Much weight to this success have to be given to Leonardo, Boban, Bierhoff and Ganz. There where other players that played 'well' only that season and never confirmed their performances like Sala, Guly, Helveg etc.
Gio welcome back, but I get your point, its a rather average looking squad isn't it. But that season Boban was awesome as well as Bierhoff powering those headers in from all angles...
I think that the -99 squad looks like most versions of the Juventus squad allways look like. Some great players, some OK players and not much depth.
I still smile when I think of that season or watch the tape of the highlights, it really just charges me up! :1ole: It was also my first scudetto! And something I'll never forget about that season is that by December everyone was writing us off--I mean Milan fans--and was concentrating on the still-rumored arrival of that one player from the Ukraine, Shevchenko. It made me angry that people would write us off so early, so I posted something to the effect of "why don't we all wait and see what THIS SQUAD has planned for us." Little did I know! :3band: :3band:

Indeed Debs, I remember those heady days myself, and that scudetto was also my "first".
While I never liked Zacc, and still dont, he did contribute something to the victory that season, and the last minute victories are all indelibly printed in my mind.
Boban, Leonardo, NGotty, Bierhoff, Abbiati and Weah were all instrumental in that scudetto victory.
What has happened to Abbiati since then? Why has he gone down hill?
I remember that we got Maurizio Ganz from none other than INTER MERDA and he did really well for us. We all know the late equalizers and late winners he scored for us and it just proved to be so vital for us getting the Scudetto. It did defy all logic!
But we also need to look at the season when we went undefeated with guys like Enzo Gambaro and Orlandini on our team. Besides being good we also have solidarity to our team.
I remember the game we played away at Juve where we just outclassed them and at the same time overtook Lazio at the top of the table. The away Milan fans just went CRAZY when hearing the news in the home of the outnumbered Juve fans there. Boban and Weah were just sublime in that game. And it mayy have embedded Pippo a seed in his head to want to play for us in the future.
In closing I also wanted to say this. The San Siro isnt the best Stadium in the world. BUT it is the best stadium in the world half of the time. Remember... INTER plays there too.
IMHO I don't think that Abbiati went downhill the reason he is number 2 after Dida is that Dida preformed beter and beter. In his first season Dida made some huge mistakes (remember that horrible mistake against leeds) but now he is undoubtly our number one. fans were screaming bloody hell! How is that possilbe?A goalie needs to get confidence by playing on a regular basis he will get more and more confident and there for play beter and better. Abbiati got full confidence of zac that year so he played well but now he lost the battle against Dida and there for isn't that confident as his was back then and now he tends to make more mistakes coz he lacks confidence...
an other example for that matter is Barthez, in the periode of 1998 2000 (WC and EC) he was considered one of the best goalies (if not the best) in the world but when Man u start to doubt his ability and use Howard more and more as a goalie, barthez made more and more mistakes and now if one should say barthez is probably the best in the world, people thing that person is joking.
Leonardo had his best season then and was crucial with his 12 goals in limited games and playing time.
What has happened to Abbiati since then? Why has he gone down hill?
Well, if he'd ever get a chance to PLAY!!!!!!! Don't get me started on that decision either! Abbiati was the surprise of the 98-99 season and one of the main reasons we won that scudetto.

Abbiati isn't half the keeper that Dida is, that is the simple thing. Abbiati was always a liability on freekicks, but now his confidence is low and he looks a bit worse on everything.
