View Full Version : Coppa Italia QF 2nd leg: Udinese - AC Milan

We won the first match 3-2 in the San Siro...now it is time for the return match (March 16 -> wednesday)

Since we are without Kaladze(?), Pancaro(?), Nesta, Maldini and Simic(?) in defense we will most probably see Cafu, San Billy, Stam and Serginho. If KK or Pancaro are fit then either should start on the left, preferably KK. In midfield Ambro will most probably start alongside Rui Costa and two more (Brocchi-Dhorasoo? Pirlo-Dhorasoo? Pirlo-Brocchi?)...upfront SuperPippo might get a start along with JDT or Crespo. Now if we go with the x-mas tree formation Kaka might get a start instead of the second striker.......anyway, whatever the players Carlo decides to field, we must go for the win...Inter is already in the semis, we should join them ;)

I sure hope Kaka gets rested, as well as Crespo, and Pirlo.

If I remember correctly, there is no "away goals rule" in the Italian Cup, so we could take a pragmatic, defensive approach to this game, though I doubt we will do that.

We need a couple of goals, and it would be nice to see Pippo and JDT making a start.

Udine are in form, though they themselves may opt to field a second string team, though I doubt it, as they will be sure to try after every opportunity they have to get into Europe, and winning the Cup is a surefire way...

I wonder who will be broadcasting this game?

FORZA MILAN!!!!

Pippo to score on his first full start!

Kaladze Pancaro and Simic are called up for tomorow, while Crespo is not. I think upfront Tomasson will be the sole striker supported by Rui and Serginho.

I do hope Milan will win at least 1-0 just to go through the way getting the treble.

Yep. The players that Oldman has put in will be the ones that start barring Inzaghi who will come on in the second half (Ancelotti said this yesterday).

Looks like they will start with a 4-3-2-1 and then switch it to a 4-4-2 in the 2nd perios by bringing Inzaghi on for Rui Costa. Im sure Simic will play some part too. Probably come on for Pancaro/Kaladze (depends on who will start vs Roma on sunday). I dont think Esajas will come on. I dont even know who this dude is!!! lol

Should be a good game. Udinese are resting players too though.

I believe there is away goal rule.

That means that if we draw the game 0-0, then Udine goes thruough? If that is the case, then we have to aim for a win, while Udine can play on the counter, in their home stadium...not a recipie for an easy win....

Not sure what you mean but the first le at the SS finished 3-2 for us so 0-0 would be enough for us to go on to the next round. Any Udinese 1-goal-margine win "below" a 3-2 would mean that Udinese goes through - a 1-0 or 2-1 result would see them in the semis.

I believe the games with Udinese - today is the second, return leg in Udine - is one of the quaterfinals in the Coppa Italia. If we qualify, we would go on to the semi-finals.
As for the CL, we won both legs of one of the 1/8 final games - ours was vs ManU - so we are onto the quaterfinals already. The draw for the 1/4 finals is this Friday.

Warro Bantan
16-03-2005, 10:52
Thanks zlatanov...I thought that because they had two away goals, to our 0, (in the event of a 0-0 draw) that this would translate into a victory for them on the away goals rule, but I do recall when we beat Ajax in the quarter finals of the UCL that we went on to win, we won 4-3 or something like that, and progressed.

This away goals rule is definately one for mathematicians, and not ordinary people like myself! :D

Coppa: Milan undone in Udine
Wednesday 16 March, 2005
The Rossoneri are out of the Coppa Italia following a crushing 4-1 defeat against on-form Udinese.

Milan had a slender 3-2 lead to protect from the first leg and travelled to the Stadio Friuli without the injured Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Nesta and Andriy Shevchenko.

Udinese needed a win to qualify and it was almost gifted to them after nine minutes, as Christian Abbiati’s clearance went straight to Antonio Di Natale, but the goalkeeper made up for his error by fingertipping the chip round the post.

The opening goal arrived soon after, as Gianpiero Pinzi threaded through for Vincenzo Iaquinta to sweep into the far corner of the net.

With two defenders already out of action, Milan also lost Jaap Stam during the first half with a slight calf problem, but the medical staff assured he would be fit for Sunday’s Serie A trip to Roma.

Clarence Seedorf came on for the second period and immediately brought a tough save out of Morgan De Sanctis from distance, while Christian Brocchi drilled just wide.

Jon Dahl Tomasson’s shot was only parried into the path of Brocchi and the midfielder’s lob was off target.

However, it was Udinese who doubled their lead on the hour mark when Stefano Mauri thumped in Marek Jankulovski’s low cross with a powerful and precise left-foot drive into the top corner.

Substitute David Di Michele struck the side-netting from a promising position soon after and Abbiati was at full stretch to tip his lob over the bar.

Pippo Inzaghi hit the back of the net, but it was disallowed for an offside position, but Milan did get back into the running when De Sanctis rushed off his line to clear from Inzaghi, only for the ball to ricochet in off Tomasson.

That didn’t last for long, as Udinese restored their two-goal cushion moments later when Kakha Kaladze brought down David Pizarro and Di Michele converted the penalty.

The Rossoneri ended their campaign in 10 men as Vikash Dhorasoo limped off during the final minutes when all the substitutions had been completed.

Just as the visitors were piling on the pressure in a desperate bid to reduce the gap, Udinese put the tie beyond doubt with Mauri’s second of the game. Another Abbiati howler allowed Di Michele to set up his teammate from close range.

Udinese 4-1 Milan

Scorers: Iaquinta 20 (U), Mauri 60, 94 (U), Tomasson 77 (M), Di Michele pen 79 (U)

Udinese win 6-4 on agg

Udinese: De Sanctis; Belleri, Bertotto, Felipe, Zenoni; Pinzi, Pizarro (Pazienza 84), Jankulovski; Di Natale (Di Michele 60), Iaquinta, Mauri

Milan: Abbiati; Pancaro, Costacurta, Stam (Simic 34), Kaladze; Brocchi (Inzaghi 60), Ambrosini, Dhorasoo; Rui Costa (Seedorf 46), Serginho; Tomasson

oh well, I'm dissapointed but not heart-broken. the team we fielded was hardly our best though some of the players should be dissapointed, especially the ones always moaning about not playing. I personally don't want to see one more comment in the press by Abbiati about him not getting a game, he conceded more in one game than Dida has in 10.

We where not good enough to go through. If you look at the 2 games vs Udinese in the coppa italia, we got some silly goals. E.g. the 2 conceeded at the san Siro and today's 4th goal.

I'm just worried about Stam and Dhorasoo.

Don't worry its just the coppa italia, this cup is made for poor people like perdenti.

almilan
16-03-2005, 17:49
disappointing but not that much, i think its a bit unrealistic to do the treble when you play in italy.

we can now concentrate fully on scudetto#18 and champions league#7

Laudrup
16-03-2005, 20:17
Well, it's never nice to lose. There'll always be the risk that a defeat hurts the morale of the team, even when it's Coppa Italia (and vice versa: some might remember Ancelotti referring to the Palermo away win as a turning point for Milan this season - as you know it was the game in which Crespo scored his first competitive goal for the club).

However, since we're in the running for both Serie A and UCL, it may be for the best. Imo a priority, we didn't want it badly.

K77SH C
16-03-2005, 21:05
A win on the weekend and this will be forgotten. Besides, considering the Scudetto race is so tight this year, Im glad theres one less distraction. Milan could be Italian and European champs this season, but then again any lapses of concentration could mean a trophyless season :finger:

This Milan side has been through alot of things together, they SHOULD return to winning-ways against Roma. But I fear this 4-1 humiliation will have some affect on us.

Do you guys remember last season? The 4-0 Lazio thumping we got? Wasn't the Deportivo game at Riazor 1 or 2 weeks after? I really can't remember.

Hope Sheva's return will boost the team. I still await Kaka's magnificent form of last season, it will come late this month in my opinion. I still await Inzaghi's 100 metre runs when he gets called offside, damn, Pippo really plays with his heart. Hope he returns to top form along with Sheva so we can get the double we earned and deserved.

with milan's extreme depth, the coppa italia should be, theoretically, easy for us to win...as our second string side are better than most in serie A: what happened!?

I am disappointed that milan is out of coppa italia. i expect they should have qualified. milan's second string is better than any others but udinese fielded their first team. however, as i said, i still expected milan to go through.

i dont understand that coppa italia can be a distraction since we can use second string players in coppa italia matches to warm them up.

anyway, it is gone now, so we can only focus on 2 very important objectives: scudetto and CL!

All in all, taken in context, this loss is not a very bad one. Yes, we were knocked out of a relatively important competition, but the loss served to do some very important things for us.

1) We now know that certain players, notorious for wanting more playing time, dont deserve it.(Abbiati, Ambro etc)
2) We "needed" to factor into our many matches a few losses, and of all the potential losses to face, I for one am happy that we lost this match, as opposed to our next few UCL and Serie A ties.
3) We were able to rest players ahead of an important match on the weekend.

The players will hopefully, as has been already posted, use this as motivation to tear into Roma, and give them the sound thrashing they should have gotten in the San Siro.

no it wasn't.

some people just like to string together 2 different thing and put them together. we lost to depor not because the team morale is low, its the exact opposite. we were too complacent thus the loss......
