Channel4 report

Bruno Conti's Roma debut is ruined by his old Giallorossi teammate Carlo Ancelotti as Milan notch up their eighth consecutive Serie A win.

Conti made his Serie A debut as a Coach against his old friend and former Giallorossi teammate Carlo Ancelotti, but this was also a game neither could afford to lose. Milan needed three points to stay top of the table alongside Juventus, while Roma were losing sight of the European spots following their third consecutive defeat.

Luigi Del Neri resigned on Monday and Conti was expected to leave Antonio Cassano on the bench in favour of Amantino Mancini, but he went for an attacking line-up with Francesco Totti behind the front two rather than as part of a trident attack. Philippe Mexes, Traianos Dellas and Daniele De Rossi were suspended, while both goalkeepers were injured. Conti's actual debut was Wednesday's 1-0 loss at Fiorentina, but the Giallorossi still qualified for the Coppa Italia semi-finals on penalties.

Milan had to do without the injured Alessandro Nesta and Andriy Shevchenko, while Serginho was on the bench despite suffering from flu. The 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Udinese in the Coppa Italia midweek ended a run of nine consecutive victories in all competitions, but they were still looking for an eight Serie A win on the trot.

Roma had a strong start with Montella firing two good chances wide of the target, then Totti failed to complete a fine passing move with the Aeroplanino and there were timid penalty appeals for a shirt-tug on the captain.

Montella skipped past defenders after 11 minutes and his relatively weak effort was gathered by Dida.

But it was Milan who went closest soon after, as Kaka redirected Andrea Pirlo's free kick and forced Gianluca Curci into a tough reaction save at the near post. It was only the 19-year-old goalkeeper's second Serie A appearance.

Francesco Totti curled a free kick over the bar and Jaap Stam performed a crucial intervention to prevent Cassano's cross reaching Montella.

Moments later, Jon Dahl Tomasson's first touch let him down on a Clarence Seedorf floated pass and Curci was able to smother the ball.

Kaka also failed to get a firm touch on Crespo's pass and Cristian Chivu was able to dive in for a corner kick. The Brazilian also had a long-range shot comfortably blocked by Curci.

Dida intercepted some marvellous duetting between Cassano and Totti, while the captain curled a low free kick round the defensive wall and the goalkeeper did well not to be taken by surprise.

Milan's best chance of the game so far arrived two minutes into the second half, as Crespo held off his marker to latch on to Seedorf's pass and pulled the trigger, but Curci bravely stayed on his feet and was able to charge down the shot with his legs.

Cafu was booked for a two-footed tackle on Leandro Cufre and the Argentine was stretchered off with a large hole in his shin, making way for teenager Scurto. Cafu was perhaps fortunate to remain on the pitch, as it was an extremely dangerous challenge.

Gennaro Gattuso unleashed a powerful strike from 25 metres that went a few inches over the crossbar as Milan began to take more of an initiative in this second half.

On the hour mark Roma had a fantastic scoring opportunity, but Kakha Kaladze timed his tackle perfectly to stop Montella in the area, then Dida smothered Totti's follow-up.

There were timid penalty appeals for Matteo Ferrari's challenge on Tomasson soon after.

Amantino Mancini was expected to start in place of Cassano, but when the Brazilian finally did come on it was for Montella and Roma switched to a 4-4-2 system.

The deadlock was eventually broken on 63 minutes. Kaladze found space down the left and curled in a cross for Hernan Crespo's floating header into the far corner of the net.

Tomasson was rightly booked for a frankly embarrassing dive in the area when he had lost his moment to put in a cross for Crespo.

Moments later Curci showed he will hang on to this Roma starting spot with another splendid save, beating away Kaka's volley from a corner kick and then capturing Seedorf's second attempt.

There was some fine play when Kaladze and Kaka exchanged passes around the six-yard box and the Brazilian fired just wide.

Seedorf charged into the box and floated in a cross for Crespo, whose header was kept out of the net by Christian Panucci's arm. The former Milan defender was sent off and Andrea Pirlo stepped up to convert the penalty.

Pippo Inzaghi replaced Crespo for the final 17 minutes, while Gattuso had another long-range effort blocked by Curci. Massimo Ambrosini took over from Tomasson, switching Seedorf to a Trequartista role alongside Kaka.

Kaka had another shot blocked by Curci and Stam's wayward defensive header almost led to an own goal.

Totti was clearly tense at the impending defeat and was shown a second yellow card for a pointless foul in midfield.

Milan cruised towards their victory and matched the club record with their 11th away win of the season.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Great result, fantastic 2nd half display in particular by all accounts. We kept the ball very well and one move that had about 20 odd passes ended with a Gattuso shot ... straight at the keeper, but still a wonderful move :D

However i'm annoyed by 2 things, Tomasson's dive and Cafu's challenge. Why do it ? There's no excuse that can be made for either and it just annoys me when our players do that.

We play Brescia next without a few players, but i think a few more will return.

Last point goes to Kaladze, he seemed to play very well, got some great tackles in and some good crosses and link up play. I'm happy for him :D

FORZA MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILAN!!!!

Sorry about the yellow cards though...we can ill afford not to have Stam and Kaka available, though Rui Costa can surely deputise for the young Brazilian...I am much more worried about Stam's replacement....

Good, necessary win, and one I am veeeeeeery thankful for..

Our reputation as a second half team seems well founded, and though this is a positive, we can begin to look for teams to exert greater pressure on us in the first half. This however should result in teams exhausting themselves, crashing into the wall built by Nesta, Maldini and Co, and allowing our forwards free reign in their box!

I am overjoyed by this win...an example IMO, of our clear superiority when we are focused, and fit.

I would not have believed that Cafu could have made such a challenge.probably the only nasty thing he has done in his entire life!Otherwise a very good perfomance by the team-Crespo has the knack of scoring the vital goals.Though we might have kept JDT on in the hope that he might sneek a goal which could help his confidence.I fear though that he is not Milan class and maybe just playefd above himself last season?

oh my i saw the cut or more like wound on cufres leg. i was like: "OH ****!!!" but cafu should never do that again as it might costs us a match and a player his season. nice victory tho. we really turned it on. now lets hope that we get our nesta and sheva back as there will be 1 week break (nesta will surely back as he is called for the azurri match, so is sheva but its mentally that is what isnt 100 % fit yet)

Cafu was lucky not to get red carded but still showing a red for a challenge which was 50/50 and on the ground isn't that easy a decision to make. I just don't want this to get used in some horrible "ref's favour milan and Juve" thing. as has been pointed out, yes we get breaks sometimes but they are small errors which we probably get against us just as often, only because we win no one really feels the need to pour over them.

anyway. great result and a good preformance (though, come on Kaka hit the sodding target!!!!) the season begins to open up a bit for us now, I really can't believe we've won the last 8 serie A games considering the opponents we've had, not to mention not having Sheva and our form hasn't been all that it could have been. It really is an outstanding achievement, here's to winning the next 8! (if we do that I reckon it won't matter if Udinese beat us on the last day :D)

Well, congrats to all Milan fans for this vital away win. Milan played a pretty good first half and had an imposing 2nd half performance. I am a bit displeased at how cheaply some of our players like Kaka and Seedorf got booked and this means we won't have the Brazilian available for the Brescia game. As for Stam's booking - the ref got it completely wrong and that was a costly mistake for us, you all know why. Luckily, Nesta is expected to be back for Brescia.
As for Cafu, that was a really nasty and reckless tackle and he got lucky he was not shown a well deserved red card - this happened at 0-0 and could have changed the rest of the game dramatically. It was not by any means a 50-50 challange for Cafu made a criminal and unwarrented approach to Cufre - rather unprofessional and irresponsible from a player of cafu's stature.
Anyway, great performance by our beloved Milan and let's get ready for Brescia and Inter.

I'm glad Milan did it and won 2-0 over Roma in olmpico and won 3

I'm upset we got alot of yellow card and funny and shame for Roma that
their captin Totti got ared card

i am happy for this impressive win. i dont know why cafu did that horrible tackle. probably he was too emotional playing vs roma. i am so pleased with our new signings: stam and crespo, they are great. and last but not least kaladze!!! he used to be milan's best player for one or two seasons. when he is on fire, he is as good as maldini in left back.

i am suspicious for some yellow cards that milan got cheaply, probably they did it deliberately to prepare for inter match? i didnt watch the match so i cant really judge.

i dont know who will be suspended for brescia match, stam can be replaced by nesta, but kaka? ruicosta is not the same level as kaka. ancelotti might rest kaka ahead of inter match anyway.

again.. i am so happy with this victory! and now we can rest a bit and prepare well for the next crucial match.

A great and deserved win and overall the two teams on the pitch did not play in the same class.

But I can not see any reason for a red card for Cafu. Cufre is also coming with full speed with stretched legs and if Cafu is not doing the same, he will have risked more. It is a fifty/fifty sitation, as Cafu with this tackle also risk his health - but it was lucky for Milan that he didn`t get hurt.

A hard tackle, but red card no way - than should Cufre also have been sent out.

A stunning victory and a massive step towards retaining our Scudetto . Congratulations to all Milanisti . Actaually I consider this match in specific a strong response to all who claim we are winning but not convincing . The current Milan side is invincible and almost complete . Even though we missed Nesta through injury and king Sheva for the same reason and Seginho who even as a sub most of the time is still an important player we still managed to win in style . Ancelotti made reshuffles moving Maldini to central defence partnering Stam and starting with Kaladze at left-back and dropping Rui Costa in favour of Tomasson and playing with a 4-3-1-2 format . No one can argue that beating Roma at the Olympico is a very difficult task regardless of their current form . Also they have just recently changed their coach bringing Bruno Conti one of the best ever Italian players which suppossedly made a positive impact on them . The key to victory was stamping our authority over the midfield dictating play and forcing them to play our game not the opposite . What is so special and great in the current side is the excellent ability to recover the ball so quickly through our midfielders Gattusso , Pirlo and Seedorf in addition to an extraordinary passing ability under pressure which makes the job for any opponent extremely difficult to break up our attacks in the build up . Even though we didn't create much in the first half we still were the better side . The biggest dissapointment was Tomasson who once again this season failed to live up to our expectations producing a poor match . He wasted our only clear-cut goalscoring opportunity in the first half when he failed to control the pass from Seedorf in a one on one situation . Roma tried to hit us on the counter attack but we were rarely under threat and may be their only chance was a shot from Montella from the edge of the box that Dida parried confidently . The second half was a different story . We produced I believe our best football this season and it was a huge entertainment . We created more through great collective team play with Crespo wasting a one on one before finally we broke the deadlock opening the score . Crespo rose magnificently above Panucci to head in Kaladze great cross from the left after he was released by Seedorf . Crespo's heading is pure class and he is among the best in the world in that skill . After that goal Roma were tortured . We came very close many times until another header from Crespo was stopped by an intentional Panucci's hand at the goal line after another great cross from Seedorf from the left side of the box . An automatic sending off to Panucci and a penalty which was converted by the specialist Pirlo extending our lead . The match was virtually over and Carlo started to make defensive subs firstly he replaced Crespo by Pippo then pushed in Ambrosini on for Tomasson and lastly the veteran Billy on for Kaladze at left-back . In stoppage time Roma's captain Totti was sent off for his second bookable offence but it hasn't had much of an impact . An exceptional match from all of our players except Tomasson who was dissapointing . I don't know what happenned to him this season . Last season he was instrumental in our success but since the start of this season he is struggling with form . Anyway with that victory we remained joint top but we are in that position by our own efforts not by favours from the referees to our straight contender . Just a simple comparison between our victory yesterday and the scandalous way Juve won there two weeks ago by refereeing favours from an offiside goal and a non-existing penalty . Hopefully there will be no absentees in the coming crucial period both domestically and continentally . A very big thanks to Carlo Ancelotti and our players for their recent streak of victories on all fronts . It is time to reap the fruits of that efforts . Forza Milan forever .

I wish I could agree with you but I have the game recorded on DVD and watched this moment at least 5-6 times for I couldn't believe Cafu was capable of doing something like this. If you have the opportunity try watching it againa and again, and ... I am sure you will change your opinion pretty quickly.
Cufre's legs were not stretched at all, at least not in a way he would have endangered Cafu, and he came into that tackle with probably half the speed of the Brazilian. From watching this episode carefully, it becomes pretty obvious that Cufre approached the whole situaution very carefully and in no way represented a danger to the Brazilian's legs. On the other hand, Cafu smashed into him with both legs put together and stretched with his cleets facing forward - it would have been a miracle if he didn't injure Cufre. I am not sure what was he thinking but, in all fairness to Roma and Milan too, Cafu being sent of was the one fair decision the ref should have made, especially when it became clear almost immediately that Cufre would have to be subed.

Kaká deliberately got the yellow card so he can rest for the derby.

Wasnt it obvious? He was kicking the ball whenever Roma won a FK trying to get a booking. After doing it abt 3 times, Paparesta just gave the yellow to him.

I can not see any reason for a red card for Cafu.

Look at the situation in reverse. If Cufre had jumped in like that and it had been Cafu leaving on a stretcher i'd have probably thrown the remote at the TV in anger  ;)

It was a very reckless tackle and well deserving of a red card. If he had gone then it could have had serious implications as Roma were still in the game at 0 - 0. With the title race so close we really couldnt afford to give Juve a 2 or 3 point headstart, they f*cked a lead up once but they cant be relied on to do it again

Great match overall.

firstly, lets get Cafu out of the way. He deserved red, simple as that and was VERY fortunate. He went diving in two footed, studs showing. Anyone who saw Cufre's injury will agree. Hopefully, he's ok.

Next about the yellow cards. I do agree Kaka tried to get his as he was constantly kicking the ball away etc and Seedorf may have been similar if he is now suspended too. Stam I don't think tried to get yellow, but got it anyway, as he got it for a very light tackle.

Moving onto individual performances...

Dida was very quiet mostly, but the two Totti shots he had to save were dealt with well.

Maldini was flawless, nothing new

Stam was excellent overall. Had the odd moment of panic, but overall he looks to be at his best and it couldn't have come at a better time

Kaladze was superb. Defensively he's looking very solid again and going forward he is doing well. Great crosses too.

Cafu was good and ran up and down the flank well. However, there is no excuse for his foul

Gattuso was simply himself. Seems to be playing with confidence too and is really incredible.

Pirlo was conducting play superbly. Great passing and control throughout the game and deserved his goal. I'm glad to see he didn't miss the penalty after missing a few this season.

Seedorf worked hard and had good control. He wasn't his brilliant self, but provided a lot for the side.

Kaka was himself, though he was brilliant sometimes and non-existent others. In the end, he deserves credit for his performance, especially as the Roma midfield did quite well to take him out of the match at times.

Crespo was good. Typical predator as he was quiet but at the moments he was needed he scored and won a penalty.

JDT was disappointing. Clearly lacks confidence and the dive summed up his match tbh.

Very good performance imo. The first half was pretty even though Roma probably just edged it. However, during the half, it was quite rare for Roma to get a clear chance, despite our defence not being at its best. We also made some decent chances.

The second half was typical Milan. Controlled, organised and VERY dangerous. We completely took control and Roma were left in big trouble. I love the way we can keep possession so well, which is one of our greatest assets.

Overall, a deserved and necessary win. Lets keep Juve panicking ;)

Yes - Overall I always imagine the situation the other way. Just saw it again and would still not give any redcard, even if it was Cafu who had been injuried.

Cufre is going into this tackle also reckless - Not as much as Cafu maybe, but still this tackle is not clean.
I`ve always learn that if you make hard tackles on the pitch, it often also hit you.

Normally Cafu don`t make such hard tackles - that is maybe what is surprising.

i cannot believe u are still not convinced... if some1 had tackled me that way id say 'screw the whole in my thigh, im gonna kill this SOB' .... that is probably the worst tackle i have ever seen... what was he thinking??? ... u see the look on his face before he went down and u can see that cafu was eager to injure the guy...

i was really pissed off at the way kaka begged for that yellow, what the hell was wrong with him??? .. i feel sorry for seedorfs yellow, its one of those situations where u get blamed for doing nothing wrong! ... i wanna know what he meant when he raised his hand on kaka after kaka pulled him back. nothing serious i hope!

stam, hes a wall man, its so funny, people want to shrug him off they end up on the ground, imagine going into a fight with him!!!

so we have brescia next and i expect cafu to get a ban on that tackle so well be without stam, cafu, and kaka ... and some1 else if im not wrong... hopefully well have nesta, billy and rui to deputise plus SHEVCHENKO back!!!

You're taking this too far. Cafu has always been a fair player. This was merely the exception that proves the rule.

Only because you were likely not born when this legend made his debut, you shall be forgiven ;)

I agree with Laudrup. I am one of those who think Cafu deserved a red - actually I think Grande Milan is the only one here who doesn't think so - but I don't think he had the mindset of an assassin when he tackled Cufre. I don't think he did it deliberatly but nevertheles it was a horrific tackle and the Brazilian deserved to go.
I wouldn't be surprised if the FIGC ban Cafu for at least a game by the rule of vedeo recording often used in Italy. Hopefully it won't happen but there is a good chance it will.

No, I don't think video evidence can be used against Cafu, because the ref saw the tackle and gave him a yellow. If I'm not mistaken, video evidence can be used only if an "incident" escapes the ref's attention.

I still think he deserved a red.

i was really pissed off at the way kaka begged for that yellow, what the hell was wrong with him??? ..

As for Kaka' deliberately getting himself carded, players often do that so they can be suspended for an easy game (Brescia) and be free of the threat of missing an important game (eg Juve).

He's also been called up for the Brazil games, which means he probably would have been rested for Brescia anyway. Sneaky little devil. :dconf:

As I was telling you, we are politically correct in a crazy way. Now that Cafu was not sent off (he sould have been), what must we do? Commit suicide? Following this type of correctness, juve would have remained without supporters for a long time.

Indeed we won against Roma easier than we had imagined, but let's accept that Roma is no longer what it had been!

FORZA MILAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS In another section of MM, Chivu was rated as possible Milan defender in future and I wrote against that idea.
Sunday night, Milan scored twice and had several other occasions. In none of those situations did I see Chivu, not even captured by the camera somewhere in the remote distance.
Where was he?!? Was he in Rome that evening, after all?!
Chivu in Milan... Do you really like horror serials?!?

the Cafů intervention?
No doubt, I think it was a tremendous "carrinho" on Cufrč.

Cafu should have got sent off. Dreadful challenge. My sympathies are with Cufre as it looked horrific and very painful.

With regards to our performance. I was very impressed with the way we came out in the 2nd half after a lacklustre first 45. Tomasson however needs to start looking for a new club. I cant handle watching him in a Milan jersey anymore.

It would be nice if Milan supporters had more faith in their own players. Give this guy a break, he had a difficult season marred by injuries and lack of opportunities with the arrival of Crespo. It is normal to see a player who doesn't get that much playing time to lose his continuity after a while. Another reason could be the Euro 2004. It is often the case that such summer tournaments have negative effect on how CERTAIN players perform in the coming season.

Since when have Juve become a positive example for fair play? Plus if a person had even a little bit of personal integrity and morale, he/she wouldn't be a long-time Juve fan.
As for Chivu, yes he was in Rome and this was his second game for the season - the midweek Coppa Italia game vs Fiorentina was his first. I am not sure what you expect from somebody who lacks match fitness for he has missed the whole season so far due to a serious injury. Remember how fragile and insecure Stam was after being absent for quite some time and look at him now - he is absolutely magnificent. Maldini and Nesta have also had these difficult periods after long-term absences.

sergiu did not imply or say that juve became a positive example for fair play.

sergiu did not imply or say that juve became a positive example for fair play.
but he did imply that their example should be followed by Milan, didn't he? If what you say is true, are Milan supposed to follow bad examples of fair play?

I think we would both agree that only the original poster could claim whether I misunderstood what he meant or not for the sole reason that he knows best what he had in mind by saying that.
So far he has not tried to defend or clarify in whatever way his statement so it might be a good idea if you gave it a bit more thought if it was not actually you who misunderstood him.
