This season Seria A was increased to 20 teams. I just want to know if there are any plans for Seria A to go back 18 teams. With the squad Milan have they have just about coped. How are other teams supposed to. Look at Parma, they are in the semi final of the Uefa cup and are fighting relegation. The worst thing is that Seria A finishes a whole two weeks after the premiership. Will Parma have to put a reserve side out in the final if they get there to avoid relegation. Will Milan have to risk losing the Seria A to win the CL.

Back to Milan after the Juve game we will have played 5 matches in 21 days. Thats a game every four days. Milan havent even been able to train properly as each match is training for another. Juve are looked tired against Liverpool.
I really hope they change it back because its a huge disadvantage to Italian sides. If not they should at least start the season earlier.

Maybe we need to start the season earlier. England and Spain have a 20 team format. Serie will adjust to the 20 team format sooner than later. It's only the first year around trying this. I understand the anxiety cause it would be at the expense of Milan being tired for the CL final. But hey.... that what make real champions tears and sweat and pain.

Yeah I see what you are saying, the victory would be even sweeter, but what if Liverpool win because of it. They wont care, its something that can really cost us. Im certain if it was any other Italian side they wouldnt be able to do it. Milan seem to get maximum points from these tight schedules, but its just an unnecessary disadvantage

I am not a fan of bigger fixture lists, for whatever reason, and we all know why it was done in serie A. If you ask me the fact that it exists in other leagues and they cope is not a good enough reason to say why not in Italy.
I said this before so its not because of our current situation that I say it. Sure the players and teams might get used to it but I am against this kind of expansion where there are no sporting reasons.

You know the worst part of it is that one side of me says to not be too concerned with the Scudetto, yet we are tied for first and can win it. The result can be that we win neither. ANd that would be just a sh!t feeling wont it???
Our team is in a good place but at the very worst time right now. I dunno man????
If I had to choose the Scudetto or the CL.... well the bigger one of course.

The season could be so cruel to Liverpool and Milan. We could end up with nothing, they could ebd up with nothing after two finals and to top it off they wont be in the CL next year no matter what. But hey footballs a cruel sport

Liverpool will have ten days' rest before the CL final. Milan will have played the previous Sunday, against Palermo.

Milan will not play the previous Sunday. They will ask for postponement as has happened in all prior finals (except manchester final when both Milan and Juve were happy to play on Sunday because the rossoneri were sure of the third position and could field a reserve team incl. reserve coach while juve had already won the league).

as minimum, it will be played on saturday 1800. but i think milan will ask for game to be advanced to thursday 19th may. palermo will accept, esp. since zamparini, the palermo president, is also vice-president of Lega, therefore a friend of galliani. the only problem stems from juve. since league winner is still undecided, there is a rule in italian football that last few games should start at the same time to give no one an unfair advantage, it is claimed. wil they accept to play on thursday as well? i don't think so, considering they did not want next sunday's game to be played at 2030 instead of 1500 (so we would rest some more). mother*****!

Getting back to the 20 team format. I think there is a lot of potential in this to even make the Italian League to continue to be the strongest in Europe. With a 20 team league format, the teams in Italy will need to increase the number of players in their rosters. In order to do this with the growing transer market demands, it is cost effective to return to and re-invest in the youth training. We havent had a wonderkid from our program for some time. No where near the numbers Milan and many other italian clubs used to produce like before. The timing couldnt have been better for this and many other clubs in Italy to return to this kind of philosophy. But the commitment needs to improve a bit more. I know Milan has a good youth training program, but it needs to be even more serious because like I said before we just dont put out the number of quality players from the youths like before. Milan should be producing the Kaka's and Maldini's instead of depending to much IMO into the tranfer market. If any club can pull this off, AC Milan is the club best positioned to do it. Why??? Our transfer spending is fiscally conservative and we get some quality players for a very good deal. Once in while we splurge, but we dont try to buy titles like Madrid and Chelsea do. Milan actually wins titles with such a policy. However the tranfer market prices will soon make it impossible for this club to find any real bargains and thus we need someplace else to get a good pool of players worth this clubs money.
So what I'm trying to say, is that instead of trying to find a replacement for Maldini in the football market, we should find him within our own developement program. Not like NOW, but more like Yesyerday! It is that urgent.
We all know that the 20 team format in it's first year has been a tire for this team. Look at our roster! We dont have enough players to make a good rotation plus gurantee if they are good enough to carry through the game so that we can be competitive. I'd like Sheva to play in every game, but it would be stupid to have him do so. I'd rather see another striker that can be depended on like Sheva to play in place of him giving him the rest he needs for future games. That goes the same with all the other players and their respective positions as well. No disrespect to some of our Milan players, but if we cant depend on them carrying the game to win with their wages, what is there to lose fiscally if we put in the young ones to play instead??? This is why we have too many tired players. They play too much in a 20 team format and we realistically cant depend totally on a lot of these players on the bench. This is true what I say because we dont field Simic, Brocchi, Dhorassoo, or even Ambro and Serginho that often!
Let me stop for a while and get some response and critique from you folks so that we can debate the pros and cons on this issue. That way I dont get way ahead of myself.

I'm all for youth development but it's a risky business, Maldini was one in a million, say he was brought through Atlanta's ranks, we'd be crazy not go for him. The problem is you can't guarantee good players with a youth academy, however I agree it should be a more serious concern with youngsters given chances. But what if we just have a spell of yielding less than great talents, we do have youth players, Donadel, Bloudek, Gasperetto but to be honest these guys don't quite look up to it.

You sort of are catching my point. Right at this momen the transfer market is a very risky business and the costs are just soaring. There will be a time where it is much more cost effective to return to serious training of the youth players. Today IMO while the facilities are great and all, big clubs are not into producing greats like before. Maldini wasnt the only great developed in a youth program. Players like Baresi, Costacurta, Donadoni(Atalanta) were seasoned by such programs. Donadel, Gasperetto, Macarone came through the training program at a time where the tranfer market was the big thing.
How does this relate to a 20 team format??? You may be asking. Well with more games, we along with all clubs need to fill our rosters up with more players. We just dont have enough for a 38 game season along with Cup and European matches.
We need to have more faith in the youth training programs and then transfer such philosophy to also having faith that these players can debut quite succesfully into a Serie A games for Milan. I dont see that happening now. Currently we are training players and more so buying them and then loaning them out to a Serie B team or some small Serie team with little or no success in their further developement.
So with a 20 team league, the best oppurtunity to fill the rosters in the most cost effective way is with our youth. This is where I think we will find a fitting replacement for Maldini. Well I think Nesta is actually Maldini's replacement for the time being, but we need to find someone with ambition and a good sense of Milanello tradition to play along side Nesta in a few years to come. We are running out of time because the sad day we all know will come within a couple of years...Paolo's retirement.
Thanks for your imput Meazza! Maybe you should ask me questions about my thinking more. That way I can answer it in a more direct way.

I dont think theres any chance of us reverting to the 18 team serie a again; besides this issue of too much games was not only discussed after there were 20 serie a teams, it was even before when we had around say 2 or 3 games per week in itself which is already tiring

its a tough call really ... you ought to think that a 2 week break for CL game is enough to rest the team but it doesnt

Do you think we need to expand our roster of players??? We have a small roster for a big club dont you think so??? Plus we all know the players are as fit as can be, but still they can only play so many games before they burn out.

I am very well aware of that, I was merely pointing out that this problem existed even BEFORE serie a was reformatted to 20 teams

Ooops sorry. I wasnt trying to criticize you or anything like that. I just wanted to know what your opinions were to solving these problems from an 18 team to now a 20 team format.

Its okay. Im a bit emotional lately. Its because of you milanistas, lol. I wanted to discuss about that - UEFA has put a 2 week break for one CL game and that should probably take the weight off the load a bit but it doesnt seem to work

Well I felt the need to reinvoke this thread to ponder the questions and challenges facing us next season again with a 20 team League.
Some of youse were concerned about the league being too long and tiring our players. We of course can see that the reason why they were tired was because we truly do have a very small roster for a very big team in what is now essentially a bigger league with 20 teams. So lets talk some sense and find a relationship with this topic and the transfer market. I ask of this becasue I think it is not neccesary for us to unload players like Kaladze and such. For such a big league we should have a increased roster that is stronger and reliable for the coach to effectively rotate through such a long and hectic season. That way I would be comfortable when some of our stars can be on the bench and yet we still win our fair share of games in the CL, Serie A and even the Copa Italia. I also think we need to incorporate our young players into this increased roster so that we insure this club a strong posterity of tommorows players. We might find our next superstar in this rank. Right now all the Gila's are found somewhere else and this is absolutely unacceptable.
I find this part of the club aspect more intellectually invigorating than the pure psycho-babbling of the tranfer market. Any fool can talk some sense in the tranfer market yet when the next season comes to past, I find that a big percentage of people calls in the mrket were ironically and totally wrong.

Thats not such a bad idea Kui.

I dislike the new format of 20 teams. Simply put, I don't think Serie A should or need 20 leagues, at least not from a sporting perspective.

IF we must keep the 20 teams, then the season has to become longer like England and Spain, as if there is a team like us last year, I don't see how they can achieve much, as it will be asking too much of the players to do so much. This hurts not only the club in question, but Italian football as a whole. Therefore, the Italian FA must deal with this problem soon, as Italian football had come back to light over the few years as a dominant European force and is risking that now.

As for transfers, once the league is formatted properly, there shouldn't be any real need to buy more. A man of 22-24 is ok and at a stretch, I would say 26 should be the limit.

The type of transfers we need are prudent ones. We need to buy quality, but also variety. This will allow us to change our gameplan more freely during matches, meaning we'll be able to hurt the opposition more.

To add one final comment, if I was Carlo, I would aim on two things this summer. One is to work on the players mentality (I won't explain precisely what I mean again). The second is to drill our tactical game into the players to avoid positional problems we result in once in a while. Both Sacchi and Capello have done this in the past and I do believe that it helps, even if not from a man management perspective.

I said before the season started that the longer fixture list would benefit Juventus, and it seem that I was right (for a change, allthough I would have preferred to be wrong). We were pretty much on track for the first 34 rounds and then lost it, due to lack of concentration and fatigue.

As the 20 team system is not likely change, having 2 fully strength squads and rotating properly will be crucial in the years to come.

Thank you for your imput. Yes the league and more so the teams in the league need to be aware of this big change in Italian Football, as it has hurt our strength in European Cup Championship i.e. Uefa Cup and the CL. I would always hope that a Serie A team wins at least one of these as often as we once did.

The type of transfers we need are prudent ones. We need to buy quality, but also variety. This will allow us to change our gameplan more freely during matches, meaning we'll be able to hurt the opposition more.

This is something AC Milan does do quite well more often than not. The capture of SHeva and Kaka at bottom dollar has to have been the best "market" coup pulled off by any club because these guys stock value has appreciated to a point of "priceless". No amount of money can buy these guys at least for some time. We also got some guys for free that did us well for a couple of seasons such as JDT even though he didnt show us his full skill capacity. As a free transfer, he didnt cost us any and can bring in if we do sell him. Even our most exoensive purchase, that of Nesta, was one of the best deals we could have made because Lazio made the dumbest asking price of any player and our bid was way below their ask. They bit first so that's their loss not ours. Honorable mention to also the brilliant exchange done with our cousins Inter when we got Seedorf! I tend to like Milan's prudent tranfer policies especially when we consider the number of titles we have won, which most clubs would have to sell their fans into slavery to only dream of accomplishing what we have. Dollar for Dollar, Pound for Pound, Euro for Euro... AC MILAN has gotten more bang out their bucks when compared to the money Madrid, Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, Barca, INTER :firedev: and the lot have spent.

To add one final comment, if I was Carlo, I would aim on two things this summer. One is to work on the players mentality (I won't explain precisely what I mean again). The second is to drill our tactical game into the players to avoid positional problems we result in once in a while. Yes this is very good advice to consider. He has the "tranquility" aspect of players mind at ease to par or better. Now he needs to give them the mental toughness to stay calm and repose to the end of the game. They had that all the way up til mid April, where they played good football for 90 minutes only to have a mental breakdown all in the month of May. Fatigue??? maybe but that too is part of mentality. He also needs to work and mental discipline in the aspect of which guys like Sheva will be able to handle it when the coach says "you're not starting this one Andry" so that we dont see any soap operas here in Milanello or at the San Siro. He also needs to work on the mentality of the bench players, not so much being content on the bench, but being uncontent so that they train harder and become more reliable if and when they should start. Sure! They didnt nag to a point where the media could cause havoc, but they sure were content as to let it affect their time when they did get on the playing field, and this was not up to my standards. 5.5 would be my rating for the bench players, as Rui Costa did better than last year, but JDT did not.

Our position is poor or more so some players are out of place. Irregardless, you are right Dev, they should get this tactical aspect nailed into their head. You know Sacchi if I remember used a weird training method where he would tie and connect one big a$$ rope to all the players so that they would be forced to understand and know their position in the game. When one player did not go with the flow, they all knew it, and this weighed heavily in the player's mind if he was worthy to play or not. I think the only guy he did not tie this rope to was Baresi as he was given a "libero" job with free movement.

Thanks Dev for your input. You said it in much shorter fashion than I just did here. Just trying to give you some of my thoughts as well. Cheers!

Thanks for the positive feedback Kui. The Sacchi training method I have heard about, although know very little about it, it sounds interesting to say the least.

I wish people would put less focus on transfers atm and actually provide some input here, as clearly this thread is discussing resolutions to problems without simply resorting to "We need so and so and then we need to replace all our current players and must sack Carlo to avoid the squad failing, even though he has won so much since joining".
