Cordoba in fracas with fans
Saturday 7 May, 2005
Inter star Ivan Cordoba slapped a Milan supporter on Friday evening and Coach Roberto Mancini claims the defender was right to do so.

The ‘Corriere della Sera’ reported the incident this morning, as Colombian international Cordoba struck the young man who chanted ‘You never win’ as he walked through Milan city centre.

“If my son told me he was slapped because of that, then I’d give him another so that he’d understand it isn’t right to be so rude to complete strangers,” said Mancini in today’s Press Conference.

This incident overshadows the upturn in the Nerazzurri’s fortunes and they have been at the centre of controversy over the last couple of weeks.

Cordoba was also involved in the off the ball clash that saw Zlatan Ibrahimovic given a three-match ban, forcing him to miss Sunday’s Scudetto showdown with Milan. Juventus have made no bones about pointing the finger of blame at Cordoba for “simulating injury.”

“I spoke to Cordoba and he is a humble man who is rarely pushed to take such action, so I believe him. They were making fun of him and he reacted with a little slap.”

Mancini rushed to his player’s defence then and started his Press Conference with a statement that highlighted his increasingly angry state of mind.

“Before anyone asks me any questions, I wish to say a few things. For a couple of weeks now newspapers have been writing about events that never happened, so I wish to clarify that there was no argument between patron Massimo Moratti and President Giacinto Facchetti after our 2-1 defeat at Messina. The same applies for the supposed row I had with Adriano.”

The relationship between Inter and the Press has always been fractious, but has only deteriorated over the last few months.

“If you want respect, then you have to give it back,” continued Mancini. “I understand that it’s the favourite pastime of journalists to try and destabilise Inter, but I would at least appreciate it if they stuck to reporting true events, otherwise I’ll stop giving respect as well.”

obviously the guy has a problem with keeping his hand of other peoples faces ... fookin prick!

oh my...what an incident. :googly: i wonder what would happen if one of our milan players slapped a fan of another team. but of course, our players have more class than that.

the above is something my dad would say :tong:

To be honest, what Cordoba did was wrong, but initially what that fan did was just as bad.

Players should not be harassed when they try and live their lives.

The fan should hav slapped cordoba back. The fan was actually right in what he was saying that "inter never win". The fan just spoke the truth. If this kind of incident happened in our country the fan could sue cordoba. There has to be freedom of speech

The Inter players need to learn a childhood lesson my parents taught me when I was only 3 years old.
"Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will NEVER HURT ME". Apparently Cordoba needs to grow up. For him to react in such a way tells me he has the maturity of a baby. If he cant handle this, it's no wonder why he dropped like a sack of potatos when confronted by Zlatan.

If it is India you are talking and especially mumbai, i don't think anything more than a media circus would happen. :p1511:

What Cordo did was wrong, ofcourse it hurts what that fan was saying, but as a professional footballplayer (and a rol-model) you have to keep your hands off.
A moment of weakness, but the reaction cant be approved at all.

(I have to laugh a little with Mancio's reaction: never aspect that he would say something like that)

let's all remember, inter beat Juve this season and did us a great favour. it's only Milan's fault that they didn't take advantage of the bad Juve games and finish off Siena and Brescia or we would be sole leaders of the league :/

and cordoba was right - that fan shouldn't be harassing players. just harass them on the field and leave them alone off the pitch.

Well done mr. Cordoba. Don't take insults from anybody.

what he did was wrong but he WAS being provoked. same goes as the incident where a fan got scolded by gattuso & the italian NT last year for being rather disrespectful

I agree with nadir

Wait guys! Did it need to come down to actually slapping the guy??? If we did that to someone taunting us we be arrested for assault. Now the fan was wrong to do what he did. However Cordoba needs a civics lesson cause you just cant hit anyone you want to because of what they said or say.
The only thing that would have vindicated him is if the fan had used bodily harm against him. Otherwise he resorted to being even more childish than the fan by assaulting him. That in my book makes it a criminal act of assault.
How would you like it if you were in the subway singing Juve merda lei and Zlatan came up and slapped you??? I cant believe you guys are sticking up for Cordoba.
I'm not critisizing him because he plays for Inter! I'm saying he's wrong because you dont assault people for singing a frickin song at you!

Who on earth condoned what he did ? I clearly stated that what he did was wrong but it takes two to tango, the fan was also at fault

BUT he was being provoked. I dont know if that could be any more clearer than an outright excuse that word BUT. Your words not mine Sucht. Note Gattuso only scolded another player. Yes I agree the fan needs a civics lesson himself.

We all are provoked by things all the time. I'd hate to think I would get a pass by telling people "But I was provoked". Know what I mean???

Cordoba would be a one handed CB for Inter if he had slapped a Jamaican Milanista!

Memba dat!

Ok, but seriously....Cordoba´s reaction shows his class, or lack thereof. He should have been brought to court for what I am sure would be a charge of assault. Then again, he does similar things week in and week out on the pitch, and harldy gets reprimanded for it...so why not do it off the pitch as well?
