Firstly, what do you mean by "important?" Secondly, how could you possibly leave Nesta off the list? Do you recall the year before Nesta arrived? People were saying that Maldini should consider retirement. Nesta arrived, and suddenly our defense improved and Maldini looked like the Maldini of old. Nesta, Pirlo, Dida, Gattuso and Shevchenko are irreplaceable at this point in time. For the record, Maldini is my favorite Milan player, but this is an honest assessment at this point in time.

Tough one:

1. Pirlo - when he doesn't play we loose our fluidity
2. Sheva - European player of the year, nuff said
3. Nesta - Plays well with both Stam and Maldini. Stam and Maldini does not fit well together.
4. Cafu - Our only winger, the only one to add width to our game
5. Gattuso - Allowed for three creative midfielders to be on the pitch at the same time.

It is nice to be able to leave players like Dida, Kaka, Maldini etc out of a list like this. It shows our quality :)

1. pirlo: only player we don't have a natural substitute for. when he plays below average, it generally coincides with milan not winning. the orchestra's maestro.

2. nesta: the turning point of milan's recent winning streak was nesta's acquisition on the last day of the transfer market. the rock.

3. cafu: he never stops running along his right flank, and when he's not plannig, he is sorely missed. a pendulum.

4. shevchenko: we have won many games without him, but still he is our no.1 goalscorer. a guarantee.

5. seedorf: the midfielder who takes most responsibility - he never shies awaw from the ball, and always tries the most difficult thing because he is brimming with confidence. unfortunately, when things go wrong he is he first culprit of the fans, but his skill is still impressive. a magician.

Sheva - without him we would have lost a lot more games than we have. The best striker in the world by a mile, and irreplacable.
Pirlo - dominates midfield, the best passer of a ball in Europe and possibly the mosy under-rated player in world football.
Nesta - best defender in the world?
Dida - very underrated and gives the defence a lot of confidence. Has made some incredible reflex saves this season, especially in the Champions League.
Maldini - great touch on the ball, reads the game well and a total legend. Him and Billy are responsible for the team spirit and keep the players on their toes!

I can name five of them though I can not put in a row and number them... because it would be inconsitent point of view of mine concidering real situation... So I name them in alphabetical order: Dida, Gattuso, Nesta, Pirlo and Sheva.

1. Dida (good strikers and defenders can eaisily be bought...but a great keepr only comes around once in awhile)
2. Sheva
3. Maldini - Not the quickest, or most skilled anymore, but he's a great leader and he needs Milan as much as Milan needs him.
4. Nesta
5. Kaka - He's still young, and if we can keep him around, he can be the next Milan lifelonger in the midfield. So much talent. You need to hold onto young players like that. You can always buy tem later, but its much better when you can develop them yourself.

I just also want to say hi to everyone here. I've been a hard Milan supporter for about 4 years now, ever since I began to really pay attention to Football. I began to get hooked for real when the US made the 16 of the World Cup. Now I'm a huge footie fan, huge Milan fan, joined the high school team, and Now coach my former high school's boys and girls varsity teams. I just discovered this forum, and hope to have some fun here. It's hard to find football fans here in the US, let alone Milan fans. Everyone here just likes Man U and Beckham.

nice to have you here... enjoy it

sf_esq i understand what u said but every team needs 2 great CBs and if u took out maldini and left nesta with laursen i doubt our defence would have got any better... plus the presence of maldini there alone is another reason why i chose him

by important i mean we would lose something if they were missing... we already experienced that with pirlo and sheva we won but it looked very ugly, i can imagine what would happen if abbiatti was in goal for a good time, while eversince we got cafu the right wing has been our main threat to opponents.
