Milan have moved quickly to replace Christian Abbiati in their squad by signing Greek ‘keeper Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos.

The shot-stopper has signed a one-year contract after Abbiati left the Italian giants for Genoa earlier today.

Eleftheropoulos, who was born in Athens on August 7, 1976, spent last season at Messina before his contract expired.

The 28-year-old, who made 10 Serie A appearances last term, will wear the No 21 shirt and provide cover for first choice ‘keeper Nelson Dida.

I think he played for Olympiakos for quite some time before they let him go and took in his place Panathinaikos' legendary Greek International Keeper Nikopolidis, if I remember correctly.
Eleftheropoulos had been quite impressive for Olympiakos but for some reason things went bad between player and club and they let him go. I remember, 5-6 years ago before Abbiati emerged in the 1st Milan team, Eleftheropoulos being mentioned, along with Dynamo Kiev's Shovkovski, as a very possible target for Milan.
Back then he was 22-23 yo and was having amazing performances in the CL for Olympiakos.

i have a big doubt about this signing and milan board have the same doubt because he signed only for one season. He havent played regukery for Messina and he didnt show big things in italy. Fiori might be our second goalkieper and Ele will be the third.

neither did Dida at first, not to mention Crespo in England. My point - the environment at the club can do wonders - both in negative and positive sense - with a player. Eleftheropoulus, at the peak of his career before he got kicked out of Olympiakos - it was an off-the field incident that caused that - is better keeper than Abbiati. The Greek simply had the misfortune to have his career taken off-tracks by football politics and that's why he has been more or less in oblivion for the past 2-3 years or so. If we show faith and support for him, he could give Dida a run for his money, a much more serious run than Abbiati ever did.

The Sydney Morning Herald, this morning, reported that Socceroos keeper Kalac has joined Milan from Perugia. The Sydney Moring Herald is one of three or four official newspapers here in Sydney, thus a pretty reliable source. With Acmilan.com officially confirmed the signing of Mr. Hard-to-spell Eleftheropoulos :D (just kidding), we probably now have a world class and 2 good keepers. IMHO, it is one too many.

Kalac is very good keeper but I honestly doubt that after getting Eleftheropolous there is any truth in this article. I would suspect that Kalac was one of Milan's targets for Abbiati's replacement but in the last moment Milan prefered The Greek goalkeeper.

mate, www.smh.com.au is definitely not the likes of tribalfootball.com. SMH is one of the official papers here. Also, they dont normally mention soccer that much, let alone Milan (the papers here reckon they would attract more readers, posting EPL news). The signing of Eleftheropolous probably just happened too quickly that even shocked reporters ;)

Well i guess its my fate to welcome to Milan this guy i used to hate for so many years.
Se he played for olympiakos and that explains it all
I was shocked when i heard the news, i mean everybody in Greece thought it was a joke that Ele joined Milan.

Lately he is rarely talked about in Greece.
He is a keeper with fantastic reflexes and he is very good under the goal posts.
He has problem with crosses and corners and etc and he is not decisive and skillfull when he has to play a few meters outside his goal line.
His technique in more than average.
Hes made more than a few great seasons in olympiakos and he always played great in derby matches.
I think he is just a decent back up keeper, nuthing special.
Maybe just a level below Abbiati.

Also, some gossip, me and Ele once got drunk on vodka in an Athen bar..
But it was just after the saeson had finished so.. :D

Kenny_Shev, man, don't you get it - goal.com are simply reiterrating what they read in the Aussie press. They aren't a new source, they just repeat what that Aussie newspaper you quoted had written earlier. Kalac's move is as unlikely as it was before ... the transfer of Eleftheropolous simply came a bit too fast and got the Aussie journalists by surprise before they even had time to report Milan's interest in Kalac.
It simply doesn't make much sense for Milan to get both goalkeepers, and now that Ele is officially ours, that should indicate that Kalac is out of the picture, at least till Christmas.

I know mate. I was just overly excited about Milan's interests in an aussie player. In one of my earlier posts, i was saying 3 keepers is one too many. After Milan has officially confirmed the signing of Eleftheropolous, the prospect of Kalac has become nothing but a rumour :(

Just read this in Milans official newsletter;

On Monday, the club also announced the signing of Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos. The Greek goalkeeper played with Messina last season and will replace Christian Abbiati next year at the Rossoneri. Eleftheropoulos, 29, made impact at Olympiacos Pireo where he also won the title as the best UEFA Champions League goalkeeper in 1998/99.

I am so excited Demetris signed for my favorite team (other than Olympiacos)...

his nickname is "Ele" (for obvious reasons) and one of the favorite songs of Olympiacos' fans was "Mitsara, (=a nickname of his first name, something like calling Johhny someone whose name is John), Mitsara skistous tin kolara" meaning "(his name) rip their asses" (i know it doesnt make any sense but in Greek it rhymes perfectly :5schal: )

Anyway... in the weekend, i will have more time to write an analytical report on his career... i am so happy i re-logged in after such a long time.
