Serie A tops world League table
12.
Source: Football Italia
Serie A is the most competitive League in the world, according to statistics released today.
Italy's top-flight pushed the English Premiership into second place and Spain’s La Liga into third, according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).
The IFFHS looked at how close the race to be crowed champions was, as well as the chase to avoid relegation and for the Champions’ League places.
The Scudetto was decided in Week 37, a week before the close of the season, while the Premiership and La Liga titles were decided well before.
They also looked at the number of foreign players in each League, as well as how highly the League is viewed from abroad, and awarded points accordingly.
The way I see it, for European leagues, Champions League success is the only way to messure quality in a reasonably fair way. Sure you can argue that a team with one great team would benefit from this more than a league with lots of good but not great teams. At the end of the day, it seems though that the characteristics of the leagues from this perspective is similar, all major leagues have roughly 3 competitive teams. Anyway, looking at CL success the last 10 years the rank would be like this:
1. Spain
2. Italy
3. Germany
4. England

As Henrik says you can apply different criteria to this than has been used and get totally different results.
In terms of competitiveness Serie A was more competitive than Spain, England and Germany using there criteria but the SPL went down to the very last game, in fact Celtic lost in the last few minutes

Again the rules can be changed slightly to alter the results massively, for example if it was the past 20 years it puts Italy top or the overall record instead would put England top ;)

Serie A compared to the other 2 leagues have always been more competitive. Lazio winning on the last day (F*CK YOU PERUGIA!!!!!!!); then Roma confirming their crowning (also on the last day I think) Juventus's 26th Scudetto (on the last day too against Udinese); Juventus's 27th Scudetto (the second last day I think against.. Piacenza or Perugia?) Then Milan, and then Juventus. The last two weren't as competitive, but it still held out.

I'd say the last one was incredibly competitive, all throughout the season any team that would gain any advantage would lose it just as quickly as they gained it.
In the end, Milan self destructed and the title was lost, but from a competitive perspective, it was easily one of the most competitive Serie A seasons of recent years (even if it wasn't won on the last day).

Don't worry, we still enjoy Manchester 2003 and Delle Alpi 2004 ;)
This year I have a feeling it will be very tight this season too. Assuming we get one more forward and with the added strength to our squad, we are actually looking to be as strong if not stronger than last season and most importantly, we have made some sharp purchases in adding depth and solidarity in the midfield (though personally I would love to have a direct replacement/alternative to Seedorf).
Juve admittedly are looking very strong and that midfield of Viera and Emerson is experienced and tough. I'm curious to see what Capello will come out with this year.
