MILAN: Dida; Cafu, Nesta, Stam, Kaladze; Ambrosini, Pirlo, Seedorf; Kakā; Shevchenko, Vieri

I was hoping to see Rui Costa play :( anyway, this game is not being broadcasted unfortunately. Im going to be watching the udinese-juve game. I dont think Udinese can do much without Iaquinta.

Anyway, let's hope Milan thrash Lazio.

We are playnig ok. Vieri is sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow, that is how slow he is!
Gila should come in, seedorf, ambro, pirlo are doing ko but kaladze is bad in defence and too bad at crossing the ball. He cant dribble or cross, lets hope marek will be back soon.
Cafu had some erors but was good on defence. Kaka had few magical moves, solid. Sheva=the king!

There was a penalty appeal from Udinese in the 89th minute and according to gazzetta.it, it seemed to be a penalty - nothing from the ref, some new guy I have never heard of. So, it's all like last year - two fouls from Cannavaro that looked like penalties and nothing given. Someone also mentioned that he handed the ball in the Juve PA in the first half.

Comments:

Milan began 'hungry' and they had that 'fire' in their eyes after a week of criticism, doubt and low morale.
Nesta was rock solid in D and played his heart out. While scoreless, Vieri was unlucky on more than one occasion...I still have hope for the old guy and refuse to give up on him...although I'm not sure whether he should have started.
I think this game could have easily (should have easily) been 4-0. The re-occuring problem is not possession, control or passing but our finishing...on more than one occasion we had a golden scoring opportunity only to lose it in the final touch.
On a positive note, it was nice to finally see our D not conceding any goals.

UDINESE - JUVE was a disgusting display by the official who carded the Udinese player for being pulled down in the box and then ignored a kick in the leg given by a Juve player to an Udinese player again right in the box.
How long can their luck/favorable decisions last??! They literally robbed these three points.

Excellent game for what I could see of it...somehow my cable company lost Gol TVīs signal, I think because of a freak storm, for the majority of the second half.

So, as for how we played in the first: Brilliant for the most part, the first goal being a display of pure class. A long ball played out of defense (not sure by who) to Vieri who did well to head back for Sheva.

The Ukraine bomber went past a defender, and cracked an unstoppable shot past the near post of the keeper, who stood, rooted to the spot, in horror.

The second, was a keeperīs error, forced by Vieri, causing the keeper to mistime catching a cross, and Kaka then scored the easiest of goals into an empty net.

Milan dominated the game for the most part, though Lazio were awful, both in their passing, as well as their shot taking.

Anyone see the second half? How did we play?

Good win, excellent that it came without conceding a goal.

FORZA MILAN!

No striker in the world has a 100% conversion rate on these so called 'golden opportunities'. For those who didnt see the game, Ive seen it so these are my comments on each player. So you can get a better picture of what was happening...
DIDA- was excellent. Picked up every cross he needed to, saved 2 shots from oddo.
STAM & NESTA - played really agressive and pressuring attackers well, good game!!
KALADZE - ferst half he was bad in defence, second he was a little more concentrated but still he lacks crossing and some pace when he tryes to dribble. He is no good at attacking. He does work hard, fights, but I think Jankulovsky in class abowe him.
CAFU - first half had some mistakes but in the second he played better, did a lot of running and again im not impressed by his crosses. Anyway, good game. He needs to shoot more.
PIRLO - pirlo was good, not excellent. Did some classy passing and fighting but he can do more, he is not pirlo we know of, still. He could be faster, but he was also ok.
SEEDORF - its nice to see Clarence like that. Pressing, passing, running, i think he is coming back. Last 2 games vere very good for him. He did well!
AMBRO - ambro did a lot of running and played like he alwasy does, missed a great chance but won a lot of duels.
GATTUSO - running....
KAKA - he is magician. No need to comment, he will be worlds best AM.
SHEVA - brilliant goal, some good moves, did a lot of running on the flanks and some great crosse for kaka and vieri. Sheva in the king!
VIERI - slow, not dangerous, not hungry enough to play for milan, GIla is 10x Vieri....
SERGINHO - played as he always does, he could try to do something else than just cross instantly from the corner.
--------------
ODDO - oddo is a great player and does a lot or running, his passes are ok and he COULD play for milan. Also he plays preety good in defence, stopped kaladze and serginho more than once.
-----------------------------------
We did well, but we can still improve, some better crosses could help, we dont need to play everything through the middle. Good game. FORZA MILAN!

zlatanov
21-09-2005, 16:50
hope to see Oddo in Milan from January :)
As for Vieri, guys don't critisize Carlo for playing him, I mean, if we want him to be back to his best, he needs to see some faith in him. This is how you rejuvenate a player - show him some confidence even if he plays bad at the beginning, and then he will improve with time ... exactly what happened to Crespo - remember how bad he was in his first 5-10 outings, and even more, for Milan?

Warro Bantan

mrki, I couldnt agree with you more, especially with regard to the above. I thought we played very well, full of confidence, tackling with a bite, and Seedorfīs contribution (which I omitted in my first post) was tremendous, especially with two great through balls which unfortunately didnt result in goals.

This is the way I need to see the Milan organisation work, from coach with good team selection, to players playing with conviction and focus. Lazio, as far as I saw, didnt look threatening at all from set pieces.

 Milan

Forgot to mention that Vieriīs impact was felt in this game, despite his lumbering gait, he did contribute to both goals, and for this, I credit his experience. His well weighted header back to Sheva for the first goal, and his persistence in putting off the Lazio keeper in contributing to the second, were cruical moments in the creation of both goals.

So, he wasnt so much an "eeediat Vieri" in this game! :D

Not refering to one striker missing all the oppurtunities. That said, Vieri sending the ball inches over the net (bicycle kick) after a Sheva shot that was barely blocked....Kaka kicking on goal when Sheva and Vieri were to his right and Ambrosini kicking the ball high when faced with an open net is not exactly flimsly opportunities.

Vieri's shot after Cafu's blocked shot was very difficult -- I don't expect a player to score on a bycycle kick attempt. Kaka chose to shoot as mentioned which was the right decision because there were 3/4 Lazio defenders between him and Vieri. He could have passed it backwards to Sheva but he was outside the area - not a clear goal opportunity. Ambrosini had a good chance which came after the keeper spilled a long range Kaka effort, I agree. Sheva had two other good chances; one from a pass from Kaka which he chested down and took a snap shot on target which was well saved by the keeper, and the other from a great long pass from Seedorf which left him alone with the keeper. Sheva chose to shoot early from the edge of the box which again was on target and well saved by the keeper. There were some other half chances and we had 5 corners and 2 free kick shots toward goal which were blocked but that's about it. Could we have done better; yes, but I don't think our goal per chance ratio is low (we certainly can't expect it to be 100%). I also don't believe it is our re-occuring problem.

I enjoyed the match. We could have done more but did the necessary.

The co-operation and mutual understanding between Kaka' and Sheva continues to amaze me. When we're on a low (not very often) it's comforting to keep in mind that we have one of the deadliest of attacking duo's I can recall.

Whenever those two are fielded together there's every probability that we'll score and win.

A great win for us when it is needed most. It could have easily been 4 or 5-0. Sheva has missed some easy chances (if not glorious chances) by his standards recently. Yep. Agreed with you laudrup. The understanding b/w sheva and kaka in attack is just simply amazing.

Agree with most comments. Good match overall. Definitely could have scored 5 or 6 goals in this one. I don't think Vieri should be starting. Vieri is terrible and cannot be compared to Crespo last year. Crespo played ahead of Tomasson, which is at least justifiable. There is no way Vieri should play ahead of Gilardino, period. Otherwise, forza Milan!

He is suffering..no doubt. However, he was involved in both goals albeit minimally. He made the backpass to Sheva on the first and his tip on the second goal led the keeper to jump his way allowing Kaka to be wide open.

Sheva 5 games 4 goals
Kaka 5 goals 4 goals
Gila 4 games 1 goals
Vieri 3 games 0 goals
Ambro 5 games 1 goal

No one else has scored?????? Seedorf's scoring next wkend. Rui Costa will be given a go im sure because Kaka will be rested for Schalke. Maybe we will see Gila and Vieri up front. A formation I really hate is to see the christmas tree formation with Rui and Serginho supporting the lone striker, thats just terrible. Pirlo should be rested for Vogel. Gattuso must be given a chance to play as we are playing Treviso, it wont get any easier than that. It'll be his chance to prove he hasnt lost it. Inzaghi will be back to Milanello on Saturday, will he be able to play on Sunday? They said he will only be back when is 100%, does that mean he is back to full fitness?

Congratulations to all Milanisti . We have turned in a solid performane and got back to winning ways against a tough opponent . Most importantly we kept a clean sheet for the first time in around twelve matches giving our rearguard a badly needed boost even if we had to do without our legendary captain Maldini who was watching from the stands and cheering for our goals like any hardcore fan . We virtually finished off the match in the opening quarter scoring twice in the space of two minutes firstly through a great Sheva goal after he skipped past a defender and smashed the ball home into the near tight angle and the second after the sensational Kaka tapped in a lose ball after the ball slipped from in between the hands of the keeper after a low Cafu cross from the right wing . We showed much better compactness and composure in our defence and our back four of Cafu, Nesta, Stam and Kaladze had a very good match . Carlo relegated Gatusso who has been completely off-form lately to the bench in favour of Ambrosini while Vieri started upfront at the expense of Gilardino . Carlo as usual emloyed a squad rotation system in such a congested fixture-list . What mattered the most was that we were clinical in front of goal converting our ball possession control into goals unlike our last match against Samp where we created much more opportunities and failed to capitalize on them . We could have added more goals in the second half coming close two or three times but we couldn't put away our chances . Hopefully like last season our victory against Lazio would be the real kick-off to our campaign even if Juve are yet to drop points . We need to build on that victory against Treviso in our next match .

Did you watch the Samp. match?? We cannot be accused of not having possesion, ball control or passing...but we are guilty of not FINISHING IT...like someone said at the end of the day possession is NOTHING without scoringWhat I am saying is that statistics, for example OPTA stats, will tell you that top class strikers convert about 1 in 5 of their chances. I think we are doing ok. Probably we should have more chances given our possesion, ball control or passing and for sure we have to stop leaking goals.

good result in this match and things are beginning to look up.

Tactically, I didn't see too much wrong with the side with us playing a high pressure game and preventing Lazio from doing much.

I wouldn't say it was a tough match based on our opponents (Lazio aren't the force they were and without Cesar and Peruzzi, were further weakened), but the circumstances and the pressure made it harder.

The players...

Dida - had little to do, but was great when called on

Cafu - Wasn't at his best, but pressed forward in the second half once given more space.

Nesta - Not at his best, but very solid

Stam - Made the odd positional mistake (one was an offside where he stayed too deep and Nesta was lucky not to give a penalty away), but otherwise solid.

Kaladze - A few mistakes and generally not at his best, though not awful either

Pirlo - Wasn't spectacular, but did his duties as normal and conducted play

Seedorf - Very impressive this match and always involved. Here's hoping he carries on like this now.

Ambro - Great leader and really was brilliant. Always kept cool under pressure and really added solidity to the side. If he continues to develop like this then we have little to worry about finding a possible replacement for Rino.

Kaka - Good match, involved heavily and scored to boot.

Sheva - Good match, but should have scored more than one

Vieri - Still lacking form, but he did sacrifice well for the side.

I thought in the first half the players were pressing a little too much at times which would leave the defence a little exposed which usually resulted in a freekick to Lazio. However, the second half we really solved this problem and controlled Lazio better. Also worth noting we did well on set pieces defensively, although Lazio aren't a huge threat.

Here's hoping we build on this now and look to develop further as the side are now starting to take shape.

FORZA MILAN!!!!

Word...Ambro was the man as far as I could tell from last night...BTw, about that Rino comment...I wanna see both in the team. I still have faith in Gattuso, in contrast to many people. I think he is gonna snap back to life sometime soon.

Ambrosini has been amazing so far, really good... However, we cannot play with Gattuso in the same team as him. They just do not work well together!

good result in this match and things are beginning to look up.

Very Good analysis Dev! :pp20:

He is suffering..no doubt. However, he was involved in both goals albeit minimally. He made the backpass to Sheva on the first and his tip on the second goal led the keeper to jump his way allowing Kaka to be wide open.

That's a good point.

Well, I certainly haven't lost faith in Rino and have defended him a number of times in the past months. However, I wouldn't play Ambro and Rino together unless we really need to. The reason for this is we sacrifice a part of our possession play in order to add strength into the side, which imho usually results in the opposition gaining hold of the ball, causing increased pressure on us defensively.

However, if Ambro plays like he did yesterday (and much of this season for that matter) he easily deserves a starting place, as he plays with the same intensity and aggression as Rino, is tactically more disciplined and better technically (scoring goals as well). Add to this the fact that he's acting like a leader on the pitch and seems to be controlling his temper, we're talking about someone who is potentially one (if not the) best ball winning midfielder in the world.

Thanks Kui :)

Ambro, IMO, was playing just as well before losing his place to Gattuso and being relegated to the bench. This is one situation where a true rotation system is in order. He and Rino should split the minutes, depending on our opponents, fitness etc.

MILAN BOUNCE BACK
9/21/2005 10:33:00 PM
Milan returned to winning ways in a 2-0 win over Lazio at the San
Siro, with first-half goals from Andriy Shevchenko and Kaka. Following
the defeat at Genoa on Sunday, the Rossoneri put in a convincing
performance in front of the home crowd. Milan dominated most of the
match and opened the scoring on 12 minutes through Shevchenko while
Kaka added the second two minutes later with a little help from Lazio
goalkeeper Matteo Sereni. It was the third home win of the season,
following victories against Siena and Fenerbahce in the Champions
League and just as importantly the side did not concede a goal. The
result took Carlo Ancelotti's side back into the title race, on seven
points.

i'm gonna put me head on a block here and say that Vieri will score between 12-15 goals for us this season....

His movement is good...not as fast as he used to be, but his positioning is good and controls the ball well and feeds onruhing players near pefectly....it's only a matter of time before he gets his touch back...and when that does come...watch out...he will be a goal scoring machine......

so there i said it...12-15 goals this season

That is a ballsy statement..but I agree Trini! Vieri can't be accused of not 'being there' or of totally being left out of the action...once he starts scoring I think he will go on a rampage of sorts :dcool:

i think vieri needs to cut his hair...ever since he let it grow he has not been the same...i know its a stupid superstition but hey, it wouldnt hurt at all!!! we need vieri to get back to his high scoring days if we're to compete sucessfully in domestic and european matches!

forza milan!!

Vieri hasn't scored less than 12 goals/season the last 7-8 years so trini's statement is far from unrealistic.

Hey, this may be something that can start a new thread if you guys find it interesting but I agree with Milan3869...

There are little details that cause big changes in players, like the hair... I don't remember the source (website) but I read Serie A players spend a big % of their time on the pitch fixing their hair, as the avg. has longer hair than the rest of the players of other leagues... plus, it has to do with the way the think of themselves...

another example, Raul from Real Madrid, ever since he let his hair grow, he has been a shadow of the younger Raul...others play really bad when they cut it short (remember Francesco Coco? or Beckham... although both suck)... or maybe the number...

Seedorf cut his hair after Milan lost the Intercontinental final in Dec. 2003... then again after the end of last season... Sheva doesn't wear the tape on his ankles anymore, did you notice?

Simic changed his number hoping to stay away from injuries...

So I agree, Vieri needs a haircut...
