View Full Version : Some problems with MM
I do not know why but these days MM is very slowly. Even sometimes my browser can not find it and shows me this:Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in C:\Inetpub\vhosts\milanmania.com\httpdocs\forums\includes\db_mysql.php on line 212
Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in C:\Inetpub\vhosts\milanmania.com\httpdocs\forums\includes\functions.php on line 490If you know the problem could you tell me what's wrong and what should I do. Because the slowlyness irritates alot.
Is it happening at certain times of the day? Recently - as in last 2 days? Longer than that?
I've had some problems just gettign to the site in the last 2 weeks, if I'm recalling the time frame correctly. Then sometimes when I do get here I can't get into anything...
Server or what? No error messages, just either can't access the site or just can't get into posts/forums/etc.
I know that the hosts servers have been attacked this past week or so with a worm, that would probably explain the slowness as these worms tend to take up a lot of the network resources.:(
I'll do some routine maintanence on the sites as well to try and trim some of the fat away as one of the problems with a large database like this here is the access times.

Well it has been going on like this at least for me for many months now. I am definite that this isnt something that has been only recently happening. Thanks Rae for disclosing this info. I thought it was only a problem I had with logging on and even surfing the MM site.
Yah thanks for saying something Rae, if nobody says anything I can only go by what I see and I have had no problems:D
Also have things improved over the last couple of days?
I am doing some things on the DB right now so it may get a little worse before it gets better:)

I find it tricky to get onto ther site in early morning(uk time).I have noticed this for some months now.Havent noticed any difference in the last few days
I have rarely had any problems with our server but those execution time errors could be due to replying or quoting large messages where the forums will try to load every database query for up to 30 seconds and then give up...not sure if its really a server problem so much as the language this forum is written in.

If a problem always happens at a specific time I wonder if its not due to some service on the server rebooting/restarting...will look into that

I thought that sloweness had something to do with a lot of people visiting at the same time... I thought like WOW MM is now into big leagues or something and growing bigger by the sec. Sad of not hearing that that's being the actual screwer, but well good luck in getting it done fast, we're Milan addicts.

Server is pretty fast to handle the users, hence the amount of money being paid for it :D but we'll tweak what we can to speed things up :)

I still have problems logging on a certain times of the day.
Hey reza what kind of worm are we talking about?
Earthworm? :guw:
Earthworm? :guw::grinser: No, about a caterpillar :rock3:
Earthworm? :D this one is the virtual kind :tong:
I got a jerk on saying that everything's all right. Today I faced the same problem again. MM is very slow at the moment, and do not know why? :dontkn:
Seems fine at my end at the moment.
It may take a while to work out exactly what the problem is, so bear with us......
How do we trace the problem, Andrew? I've been trying since 7:30 to actually get anyplace where I can post or reply. I was able to get to the forum, but then could not get into anything. We've been thru this before to, where people will report problems and someone else looks and says, no it's fine and that makes it all the more frustrating! :w221:
I think we need to do some pruning, which means we need to start deleting the old, old posts that are still hanging around.
It's bizarre but when I look at Who's Online every once in a while I see sometimes over 100 "guests" and some of them are looking at topics that were active in 2001! I think we need to get realistic about this--do we really need to keep the database full of stuff that's 3, 4, 5 years old? Andrew thinks this will help with the how fast the forums load and a few other problems. We've also been talking about pruning inactive "members". The last time we did this (probably 4 years ago), we found we had quite a few "members" who registered and never posted or posted only once or twice.

What I've done on forums with similar issues in the past is archive off threads say > 2 years old to flatfile, csv etc but keep the odd really popular thread in a read only forum. For example you could cull the 100 page slag fest threads on Inter but keep say the ones related to winning the CL or the final match which won us the league etc. As for members, maybe you should cull ones who registered > 6 months ago and have 0 posts, also those who've not posted in a year to 18 months.
I don't have the time to be selective on what posts I prune and I would do it with a cut off time frame rather than what this thread means to someone.
What you find value in, I may not and vice versa.
Now if Debs or Reza want to be selective in what is pruned then that is great, but my own thought is to prune the members back to anyone that has not visited the site in 6 months (that way any lurkers can still lurk without worry of posting) and any thread that has had no activity in 6 months should also be snipped.
It'll certainly make the forums more snappy then they are at the moment:)
I have no time to learn how to prune just certain threads and keep others. Snapster, you up to the challenge? Got the time, etc?
But if we're so concerned with speed, which seems to be an issue all of a sudden, I'm not sure we can be so sentimental. I've long wanted to archive, if there's someone who's up to the technical processes to do so, step up, PM Rez and Razor.
We also have to think aobut size when/if we move to another server. The last move that took MM to the FF server was a killer for Razor and Rez, and it was due to the sheer size of our database! I believe Razor posted a figure of 800MB right now....

I'm up to the task but lack the time at this very moment. I could do so in a week or two but it seems that there are more immediate issues that should be addressed so it benefits everyone. I'd say just coldly cull all threads before a certain date.
DB size of 800MB, that's very surprising given the amount of posts available to view! Have you currently configured the forums so it stores attachments to the db rather than the file system? If so that could be an easy way to clear up some immediate space and DB size (thus speeding up a little)

I still have problems logging on a certain times of the day.
Hey reza what kind of worm are we talking about?
Earthworm? :guw:
Yep, Earthworm Jim, a video game character quite 5 or 7 years ago.
I don't know if it helps, Andrew, but I'm seeing a pattern this week. I can't access the site until almost 9AM. Would it be of any value to you if people reported any patterns to you? Or should we just transport you to our locales so you can see it? :guw:
Yeah, the problem still bothers me again and again... I can access the site however sometimes it becomes so slowly I can not do anything... Do anyone face the same problem like I do? Or is it something different?
It sux :irritate:
It is exactly the same with me Rae. I usually log on about 3 or 4 AM New York time meaning...10 AM European Central time or 10pm my local time if you want to be technical. Logging on is always a b!tch for me durng this time. Only after doodling around with this cr@p til about 1 AM my local time...does it run smoothly. Of course by then I no longer know what were the latest posts were from my last visit and then whatever the heck we were talking about from such and such a post never gets responded and now we end up with so many dead threads left with no responses.
I will even go further that sometimes I can be reluctant to post anything because after you've written the dang thing the forum get all stuck and voila' you lost what the heck you wrote down. It's no wonder people are posting these small one liners these days cause it worth not losing whatever message you were trying to post.
You better always copy the text you are going to post before you click on Post Quick Reply. I usually do that in order not to lose infromatin I have written already. ;)
By the way, now MM is working quite fast...
PS: it's very weird- so many guests are viewing index of AC Milan Forums :rollani:

First problem, use the New Posts link at the top of the main forum page. Neat trick, if you click on the "Last Post" link (even tho it only shows the very last thread someone posted in so that' sprobably a new complaint) it will take you to the last post you read in that thread. I think that's been a convenience for keeping up with topics.
And like Rae, if I'm posting a long one, I always copy just in case...and I got in the habit of doing this at home b/c of my cable connection being less reliable than MM!! :u125:
Today MM is almost dead. I can not post a message for 20 minutes. Nothing has changed I posted this thread several weeks ago. Guys, you must do something because it is becoming serious.
I KNOW this topic was posted a few weeks ago. Why is it you always take the attitude that we're doing NOTHING about the things you complain about??
Andrew, our tech guy, has been trying to figure out the problem but he sees none at his end of things. We're keeping him posted with what's happening to me, to Rez, to other members, but short of him visiting each location, I have no idea how he can fix a problem he can't actually see or pinpoint. I'll ask him AGAIN if he's found anything. :firedev:
Well there's a bunch of things we could fix. My suggestion is to get rid of all the stuff outside of the forum. You know like the news section and all the junk that is in portuguese. These areas havnt been working for a long time now. Secondly I think we should dump... yes DUMP all old threads that no one or member is any longer replyig to. I know we have some guest who look in our archive section but IMO what is past said here is already re-threaded in new posts so lets dump all the old stuff. I was shocked yet not surprised at how huge our memory database is at. Throw all of that away. Otherwise if there is a way to archive this stuff to save memory or whatever the heck, let do it otherwise trash it.
Old threads are going to get dumped. There's probably no reason to have stuff that's any older than a year or maybe 2 at the most. I'm also going to discuss with Andrew how to set up a pruning of members who joined and never posted, those who joined and only posted a few times, and those who have been inactive for X number of years. No guarantee at all that any of that will improve our speed, especially if this really is a case of the server being hit by a worm.
Ok sounds good Debs. I say we should keep old threads that are still active alive. I think the members pics and some of the reveal yourself threads a value to this site as it allows us members to get to know each other more intimately. Those are my personal opinions.
If something is active it won't be touched...that is if Andrew can find it and pull it out. He's done this sort of pruning before, I trust he'll figure things out for us.
Thanks Debs for taking this up with us. I know the tension is getting higher with this hanging over our heads. Making people happy can be a hard thing huh???
I'm stressed over as number of things BESIDES this site, believe it or not. My universe is being dragged in so many different directions it's not even funny, so I get a bit annoyed when a nasty tone is taken about something that we've been discussing for a while. If someone wants to do our techie stuff and deal with the server and all that, then PM Rez and Andrew about it! I don't happen to do the techie stuff, all I can do is request that it be done! :rone:
Let's see, roomie's dad fell in the parking lot at the doctor's office yesterday. Doc said he seemed OK, sent him home, but he ended up having to go to the ER. Well, that's fine, but roomie's parents are without a vehicle b/c of dad's insistence their old minivan be driven when it should not have been, hence they had roomie's car. Roomie had to take them in to the ER,then also get mom and dog back home. They were in the ER for 8 hours WAITING. Why does this stress me? B/c A) her folks are like a second set of parents to me, B) her dad has been in the hospital 6 times in the past just barely 5 months C) he's getting reallt ornery and hard to deal with and D) brother lives in DC so it all falls on roomie to deal with. Thank God brother is coming home today, the parents spotted a used car they like, so he'll help get all of that taken care of, and dad is going into a nursing home for 2 weeks b/c he needs PT b/c of a cracked pelvic bone.
ON TOP OF ALL THAT, or rather what's been gradually gaining momentum in the panic area...November 6th is my school's Open House for Incoming Freshman, which means THE huge day we promote this school to potential students from all over the area. We're all feeling the pressure to get things in order, prepare displays or demos, and I also have to deal with people deciding at the last minute--because they ignored my email--that they would like to have a TV and VCR or DVD in some location they're using that day for a club, a group, an activity or a class presentation. And I have stuff that needs dealt with in my own area....so I swear I spent half my time at a seminar yesterday making mental lists of things that need done and thinking of who can help me do what.
So anyway, that's my life and my stress and it really doesn't help to come here and deal with "well, this topic's been here for 2 weeks and nothing's been done! harrumph harrumph!" I do what I can in between real life, as does Rez and Andrew, OK?
I KNOW this topic was posted a few weeks ago. Why is it you always take the attitude that we're doing NOTHING about the things you complain about??Sorry, Deb, but I can not find where I have said you are doing NOTHING :rollani: I've only said that not many or almost nothing has changed. Because I face the same problems I did several weeks ago.
And do not treat my curiosity and anxiety as an offencive action towards you. ;)
Forza MM
Haven't found anything serious so far that points to what rae describes but I will figure it out very soon or I will let rae ban me :D
By the way, today I face the same problem...so...
Reza --> :ban:
:D
rae, you are not getting the error in your first post in this thread anymore, are you?
that must have been fixed couple of days after you posted since that 30 second time out was increased
As for other problems, it is likely some service on the server slowing things down at certain time(s) of day...I haven't pinpointed what it is yet but I am looking
Steps have been taken, Posts that have not been accessed in 12 months are pruned, posters that have not LOGGED IN in 12 month have been removed.
Server configurations have changed. Is it better? Who knows, I never saw the problem at my end anyway:D
I wonder what happens when a member who has not loged in for a year comes here and tries to do that?
PS: do you have the archives somewhere?
Simple answer, they'll have to re-register.
No we do not have the archives. In order to try and speed things up for the likes of yourself and others we took steps to reduce the database. The size of the database directly impacts the speed of the queries.
Yeah, but if that data is kept somewhere, for instance, in cds or pcs? Or is it vanished?
