View Full Version : Milan monitoring Mario Yepes
Milan monitor Super Mario Tuesday 11 October, 2005
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Paris Saint-Germain star Mario Yepes is the latest defender to be associated with a transfer to Milan.
The Rossoneri are openly looking to rejuvenate their ageing rearguard and the Colombian is being monitored.
Sporting director Ariedo Braida has reportedly already flown to the French capital to watch and make enquiries about the centre-back.
The 29-year-old South American is widely regarded as one of the best in his position in Ligue 1.
There is talk of a January switch even if a move at the end of the campaign seems to be much more likely.
Milans current centre-back options consist of Alessandro Nesta, Jaap Stam, Paolo Maldini, Billy Costacurta and Dario Simic.
However, Maldini is regularly being rested between games and can no longer be used every three days.
Costacurta is being tipped to retire in the summer given his 39 years, while Simic is expected to move on.
Milan have also been linked with Udineses Dias Felipe, William Gallas of Chelsea and Anderlecht youngster Vincent Kompany.AC Milan on verge of agreement for PSG's Yepes
tribalfootball.com - October 11, 2005
AC Milan chief Ariedo Braida is in advanced talks with Paris Saint Germain for defender Mario Yepes.
Braida was in Paris last week to discuss a loan deal for the Colombia international ahead of the transfer window reopening in January.
PSG chiefs are ready to do business and only a fee for the six-month deal needs to be agreed.
:tong: I am really excited with such a transfer. Mario is one of my favorite colombian defenders. He would improve our team alot

Its only monitoring him, tribalfootball is always bs.
Hmm i dont know why didnt we go for Gallas then as Gallas is 28 and Yepes is 29. I mean, how come we're not going for defender in the 23-26 region? What are we signing yepes just for 2 years?

hitmannq8, I wont put too much thought into this Yepes issue. Indeed, Milan should be looking at younger defenders, but Yepes isnt bad in my book.
I have followed him from his River Plate days, and always thought him solid in the air, and difficult to beat on the ground. As with most CBs however, he is not the fleetest of foot, and will take unnecessary bookings. (That was in his River days though, and to be honest, I havent seen much of him since his move to PSG).
I refuse to believe anything on tribalfootball, but if Braida went to look at him, then maybe something is in the works, hopefully for January.
Quite frankly, though I rate Gallas over Yepes, the Colombian isnt a bad defender at all, and I DEFINATELY prefer him to Simic.
hes not bad, just not were looking for IMO, i think it would be a huge mistake not to get gallas
Yes, Gallas might be available on loan aswell if he really wants to leave Chelsea. Chelsea certainly aren't adverse to loaning out players and would have no problem with funds to get a new one. Mourinho is always going on about only wanting players who want to play for Chelsea, so not persuing Gallas in any way would surely be an error.
I do not tkink that Gallas affair is not a romour. It sounds a bit starnge when a player conciders some options to quit his currebt team and to enter another one, which is refuses him :rollani:
Maybe on loan I would get him, but if 'ski wants to sell him, we should not bother with that.
Yepes in my opinion is much more realistic transfer. By the way, his quite good for us regarding he's a starter in his club nad national team.
I go for Yepes

We should go for defenders about 28-30 such as Gallas and maybe even Yepes. To sign a 22 year old defender is nonsens as they don`t have it to play in a defence like Milan. There will seldom be talents as Maldini, but the closest we come is Kompany.
Start signing great Championship manager players as Bonera and Ferrari etc. Galliani thankfully have learned not to do. You donīt win CL with 25 year old defense - it`s like wine :)

What do you mean... he is one of these guys who are respected by myself very much due to his steady and reliable playing style. He is very good CB and worth to play for bigger team than PSG. He is enough mature to be rossonero, and his price is quite proper to acquire him immediately. :5ok:

Agree that Yepes would be a good choice for a strong and experienced defender, who won't force us break the bank to sign him. He has been a consistent performer over the years and is known as a quite physical player yet not rude. His name isn't exactly making the headlines but you know what they say about defenders - if you don't hear his name very often, this means he is doing his job.
Our backline could look very differently for next year for Simic, Billy, Maldini, and even Stam could well be all gone, so signing Yepes shouldn't mean that we are gonna quit on Chivu, Alex, Oddo, Sagnol, and hopefully Gallas too.
what i mean by not agile is that he isnt as loose as defenders like maldini and chivu and so on, those players have class besides thir great ability to defend... yepes is a good defender, but im not sure hes the type we should go for.

don't worry - even if he comes, I honestly doubt that Braida and Galiani are lining him up for heir to Maldini i.e. a player who has the class and ability to cement his spot in the first team and never leave any questions about it (something I can say only about Maldini and Nesta ... and maybe even Stam). Should Yepes come to Milan, chances are he would be seen more as a quality back-up, who can be relied upon when necessary, rather than a regular first-11 player.
I honestly don't see why this transfer should "jeopardize" a possible arrival of Chivu or Gallas, for example, simply because we will need at least 2-3 fresh faces in defence for next year ... and this is not counting a sub for Cafu on the right.

If you are talking seriously, well, you are quite wrong. And if you are being sarcastic, its just dumb and poor.
BTW: Braida will be in Madrid this weekend watching Atletico vs Real. He (Milan) is targeting another "cafetero", Luis Amaranto Perea. Another thumbs up.

pffffff... then go support a team with 5 year old defenders and lets see u compare them with milan then.... pfffffff
I will add something to this, yes experience is very important but that is not the only (I know there are other factors but I use 'only' because we are talking about it often) ingredient of a Milan quality defense.
And in my opinion there won't be another another like the generations that we been lucky to have had (Maldini, Billy, Baresi, etc.) so its not really realistic to talk about same quality or even heirs when searching for replacements.
Youth can be very useful too and is not necessarily a bad thing just because a defender is not Gallas, Chivu or others like them.

yes i agree and im not against youth, im just saying that its a less of a risk to buy an experienced defender than a kid who knows how to take the ball away from a player. i mentioned alex and i like chivu and i would love to have them hear, what ticks me is that these guys think that if a player is over 25 his career is over, that hell wear a night robe with saliva running down his mouth as he uses a stick to move from here to there.

It was very normal to have them. We even can get players like these nowadays for our youth teams. However no one is interested in that. We fvcked up our own football school, so nobody is guilty for that except us. I know it's alot better for the media to buy young stars that to grow up yer own, because all this stuff make money for that comercial companies. Nevertheless it is not what I like. I am romatic. I love to see home grown players plaing in our team. And not foreign stars. And current situation bugs me much

a kid lol they are old enough not to be called kids
If anybody remembers my earlier posts on this issue several years ago, they will know I continuously called for Milan to make a move for him. I can't be bothered searching them all now, but I felt he hadn't done just enough at PSG to merit a move in the present, though I haven't followed him too closely recently to make an accurate opinion. That's why I didn't name him in the defenders thread. However, if he's playing well, then I would willingly support his transfer to Milanello. A genuinely good player who hasn't achieved what he could have simply by playing for the wrong clubs. In the 2001 Copa America he was sensational, and he and Cordoba looked one of the best partnerships in the world.
