What a surprise! Didnt believe it when one of the lads in the office told me. The best defensive midfielder ever in my opinion, its an end of an era for man utd. Best of luck to him wherever he goes probably celtic. Hopefully his future teammates will make the effort Keano believes the supporters deserve. Would love to see milan sign him on a 1.5 season deal, he is still a top player. here is report from sky sports:

Manchester United captain Roy Keane has left the club by mutual consent.
The shock development was revealed by the Old Trafford outfit on Friday, ahead of the weekend clash with Charlton Athletic in The Premiership.
The former Republic of Ireland international is hero-worshipped by the United supporters who will be surprised to see their idol depart so suddenly.
Keane's contract was due to expire in the summer and he has already hinted he felt the club would not renew the deal.
After an outspoken attack on some of his colleagues for their heavy defeat at Middlesbrough was pulled from an MUTV programme, relations were said to be frosty between Sir Alex Ferguson and his skipper.
Although making progress in his recovery from a broken metatarsal, the fact that Keane will never pull on the red shirt again in competitive action, will devastate many fans.
Keane has always been a fiery, unpredictable character but he has been tipped to manage United one day after showing a strong interest in the coaching side of the game.
"It has been a great honour and privilege for me to play for Manchester United for over 12 years," said Keane on United's official website.
"During my time at the club, I have been fortunate to play alongside some of the best players in the game and in front of the best supporters in the world. At all times, I have endeavoured to do my best for the management and the team.
"Whilst it is a sad day for me to leave such a great club and manager, I believe that the time has now come for me to move on. After so many years, I will miss everyone at the club.
"I send my best wishes for the future to the management, players, staff and supporters of the club."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has paid tribute to Roy Keane after allowing his skipper to agree a longer term deal elsewhere.
The Irishman has insisted he will not play for another English club so there will immediately be links with Celtic and the Republic of Ireland managerial post.
United have offered their inspirational midfielder a testimonial to allow the supporters a chance to give him a proper send-off.
"Roy Keane has been a fantastic servant for Manchester United," said Ferguson in a statement.
"The best midfield player in the world of his generation, he is already one of the great figures in our club's illustrious history.
"Roy has been central to the success of the club in the last 12 and a half years and everyone at Old Trafford wishes him well in the rest of his career and beyond."
David Gill, the club's chief executive, has also praised Keane on the club's official website.
"Roy has been a towering figure at the club for over a decade," said Gill.
"His dedication, talent and leadership have been qualities that have marked him out as one of the true greats.
"On behalf of everyone at the club, we wish him every success in his future career."
Keane arrived from Nottingham Forest for £3.75 million in 1993 and more than repaid that British transfer record fee with sterling service at Old Trafford

To be honest he could go pretty much anywhere he liked now, it just depends how much he wants to play for Celtic.

I mean you could easily see him fitting into Barca's side (like when they had Davids), Real's side (instead/with Gravesson & Beckham), our side ... the team that offers the most money i guess :D

I don't particularly like him, but he can still boss a game which makes him a good aquisition, just a shame he comes with all that excess baggage and a big gob.

Id love to see him play for Milan against Juve, just so he can give Vieira the evil eye again :)

Cant see him joining though, the amount of injuries he's had recently mean his wages wouldnt be value for money for a club like Milan. He can add to Celtics prestige even if he doesnt play many games for them so that seems the likely destination.

Strangely i am not too annoyed by this, on the Utd thread we'd been discussing Keane's successor for a long time. When Cantona left he was still at his peak and that was a shock but with Keane the time is probably right for both him and Utd to move on. Its similar to the Maldini situation, no matter how highly we regard him we all know that he cant go on forever, and when he finally does retire it wont really surprise us as we'd been expecting it for the past 5 years ;)

He is definitely a talented player, but I am afraid he is a little past it. There is a point when age really starts taking its toll and he is going through that phase of his career :(
