From skysports.com:

Bayern Munich coach Felix Magath says his team are capable of beating Milan in the UEFA Champions League.

The German club were given a tough draw against the Italian giants in the next round of the competition, but Magath expects his team to progress.

"It is a great draw. We were able to play well against Serie A leaders Juventus twice in the group phase so I don't think we should be worrying about this tie," he told Bayern's official website.

"I hope that we'll win the first leg at home by at least two goals, but we have to be careful not to concede one otherwise it will be difficult.

"The fact is that Milan have had problems finding their rhythm throughout the season so far. They have several older players in their squad and maybe that's the reason they haven't been so impressive in Italy or Europe in the last couple of years."

Executive chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is also confident that Bayern can avenge the two defeats they suffered at the hands of Milan in the Champions League group stages three years ago.

"We didn't have a pleasant time of it three years ago, but our team is much stronger now," he commented.

Cant wait to see his face hung low after Kaka and Sheva destroy his much vaunted team....

FORZA MIIIIIIIIIIIIIILAN!!!!!

I personally believe that it is going to be a difficult round. Although does not a have a lot of superstars, they are good at applying a certain kind of tactic which works quite efficiently, and our worries about our backline can come back to haunt us. Set pieces in particular worry me, as Bayern has plenty of players that can benefit from our soft under-belly.
A tough one but why not? We all know that Milan can beat any team if they really go at it ;)

Forza Milan

You know we're not buying any new players in January, right? It has been denied not only by Galliani (who we all know can't be trusted), but Ancelotti too.

Anyway, I am really looking forward to these games, and for some reason I have a good feeling about them. We always seem to be at our best when we're playing other big clubs in the CL, and by February we will have refound our true strength. Bayern may think this was a lucky draw for them, but of course they are wrong. I think it was a lucky draw for us. Bayern have never knocked us out of any European tournament, so the statistics are on our side (not that it really matters, but it doesn't hurt either).

I agree, but I feel like it all depends on our defensive recovery. No matter what some of you guys think of Bayern, they are definitely one of the most formidable sides in the world...

For those who say Bayern are formidable now, the last time we beat them they were probably the biggest superpower(preseason) and and expected to win everything that season. I don't think they're are good as Barca or Juve this season, but they're dangerously hiding under the radar. It doesn't really matter to us though. The bigger the team, the easier the match...

The bigger the team, the easier the match...

that is what i am thinking too. i am glad we actually met a team with a reputation. i am really scared of those non-favourites.....milan doesn't show up when playing those small teams. with gila, sheva and kaka on form, we should approach this game with a attacking mentality. i fully expect us to win away at bayern and to score at least twice. nowadays we cannot defend but our attack is awesome.

MATNAT
26-12-2005, 08:36
i think this game can go either way as milan are the better team however bayern are the team on form, but it could all change by the time this match occurs....

if we dont make immediate and serious improvements in defence and defending we can kiss goodbye to everything.....

i think it wold be difficult for milan to beat bayern, thinking especially of our defense and the germans strikers(pizarro and roy). i hoped that in this transfers period, Milan will buy (with money) some good and not over 32 years players, but obviously i was rong. anyway, we have the quality to defeat Bayern, but we must take them verry seriously, 'cause they are playing really a good footbal. my belief is that next season, with a renewed defence, we will be again "KINGS OF EUROPE" (even if this year is a hard battle, we can win it, i hope). Bayern let in two goals yesterday (albeit in a German Cup game) to Mainz...the mighty Mainz...so scoring on them shouldnt be too hard...the Bavarian giants did go on to win 3-2 though...so that is a concern, but an equivalent victory over us in Munich would place them in serious trouble with the "away goals" rule...and a 1-0 home victory for us in the second leg would eliminate the perennial Bundesliga champions. :D

I'm really glad that we are playing such a big team in an early stage of the champions leage. This game hopefully will make or break our champions league hopes. Hopefully if we knock such a big team out we will have our champions spirit back and then we can make it all the way 2 Paris. for me this game will either be our ticket to the final or our exit from the CL. I just hope its the first

Bayern will, because they are an attacking side, leave us with enough space for :de3: Kaka´ :de3: to run riot in.

We will defeat Bayer...I am gaining a quitet confidence as we get closer to the match day.

German teams are notorious for defensive and counter-attacking ability. It is their organisation which makes them formidable oponents. Bayern will have resolved to neutralise the Kaka-Pirlo axis. Demichelis will try to hinder them like Poulsen did for Schalke at home. Not sure if Demichelis is dirty like the Dane, though. Plus, Bayern are very strong at home. Seedorf and Kaka need to be very proactive and work together in holding possesion in order to distribute up front. Our full-backs need to be very alert, as Schweinsteigger and Ze Roberto are rapid and can cross at pace. We need Cafu back to his best for this role. I'm slightly weary at starting with Gila and Sheva. I'd prefer Pippo with the Ukranian.

I would like to see us play the X-tree formation for the game in Munchen. We would need to saturate the midfield to keep the ball away from them and also cover the flanks as they are very dangerous there - similar to how we suffocated manU last year, only Bayern are a much more experienced and organised team than the brits.
It won't be an easy game but we have more than enough quality to beat them in both games. The only question is what our state of mind would be - hope we could use the time we have left to raise team spirit and confidence a bit more and enter those games with the right mindset for the Germans are one of the most difficult opponents out there.

So would I Zlat...but u know, three of our strikers would have to be "injured" for Berlu to sanction that formation...:rollani:

Christmas tree sounds like a secure bet. 3-5-2 could also be deployed, for extra reassurance at the back. Karimi and Ze are tricky b*******. 3-5-2 is a good compromise. I don't think Milan have used this formation, despite the hype surrounding it at pre-season.

4-3-2-1:

-------------Sheva---------
--------Kaka--------Rui-----
Janku/Seedorf--Pirlo--Gattusso
Kaladze--Maldini--Nesta--Cafu
------------Dida-------------

3-5-2:

-----Sheva------Gila-------
------------Kaka----------
Janku---Pirlo---Rino---Cafu

It's true though... we have been storming every one with 4-3-2-1 formation back a few years ago~... Inzaghi is absolutely on-fire. Remember those goals against Bayern? :) Time passes so quickly and so much has changed in Milan, but our opponent is the same.

Someone us getting a little worried!! Wonder why?

From:TheGuardian: http://football.guardian.co.uk/breakingnews/feedstory/0,,-5617631,00.html

We need more effort, Hoeness tells Bayern players
FRANKFURT, Feb 14 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich manager Uli Hoeness says his side face certain Champions League defeat by AC Milan unless the players improve their attitude.
Bayern have a 10-point lead in the Bundesliga thanks to a series of streaky victories and the lack of consistency from rivals Hamburg SV and Werder Bremen.

An unconvincing 2-1 win at home to struggling Nuremberg on Sunday was typical of their recent performances and Hoeness has had enough.

"We won't stand a chance against Milan if we play like we did in our last league game," Hoeness told reporters.:haha: :D

"We've been too slow in defence, giving our opponents too much time in midfield and handing them easy chances. "We're not going to get away with it much longer."
Bayern host Milan in the first leg of their Champions League first knockout round tie on Feb. 21.

Before then they travel to face Hanover 96 in the league and Hoeness will be as interested in the effort put in by the players as much as the result.
"We need to rouse ourselves and make more effort," said the former World Cup winner.

Looks like Hoeness has seen our rise in form coincide with the "loss" in form of his team...heh heh heh.

Looks like Hoeness has seen our rise in form coincide with the "loss" in form of his team...heh heh heh.

The big Hoeness brother is as crafty a fox as they come. Bayern have always been able to put their act together, and leave their Team-Hollywood image aside, when it came to playing serious games. Plus their dominance in Germany is so obvious that their players tend to "lose interest and concentration" when playing other German teams.
Anyway, what really matters to me is how Milan is doing and we seem to be on the up after a really difficult period. It's building that extra bit of confidence that's really important to us, especially in such big games, for the quality to beat Bayern and any other team in Europe, we have in abundance.
I expect a very, very tough battle in both games with a highly experienced and organised team (IMO, in all of Europe only Juve and Chelski, and maybe Barca too are teams as dangerous as Bayern is) but believe that as long as the real Milan goes out there, come mid-March, bayern will be focusing their effort on the Bundesliga.

Forza Milaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan !!!!!!!

virtually any game from the CL is gonna be available on stream channels on at least one of PPLive, PPStream, TVKoo, TVAnts, PCAst, Feidian, etc, etc. Truth is that since I have started watching these streams, I really don't remember missing any of Milan's CL games.
The exact stream channels, however, won't be known for sure until about 1 day before the game as there are often last moment changes to the schedule.
As for Cuba, chances are you gonna be able to watch it on some SAT or Cable channel, if not, all you need is a PC with fast Internet connection and possibility to install one of those programs above, and you are all set.

You must confuse them with Deportivo that we beat 4-0. Bayern we beat 2-1 in both meetings. Your claim that we are "off this year" doesn't take into account that we are not doing worse in the league than we did that year that we won UCL. difference this year is that Juve just wins more.

the not really scoring forwards, i am getting more and more afraid as the day of the game arrives.

You must be on dope. already by the time of this post we had scored the most goals of all teams in serie A and we only increased that since. Our so called "Non-scoring forwards" have scored more goals than any other serie A teams forwards.

I feel that if anything this battle will be in midfield, will out currently incosistant midfield be at their best? I do know that these are the games Gattuso step up in.

Of course, it's out of the question for the Cuban people to have fast Internet too as that would be a sign of ... let me see if I am gonna get that one right - "moral degradation under the demonic influence of the Imperialists". Its not so important will Kahn play or not.He is world class and a leadre, but we will need to be 100% in the game to get positive result from this game. our trident up front is great (kaka-sheva-gila),they know it very well. But we ned to win it in the middle, and if Pirlo is not 100% fit maybe Vogle should really play from the start. If we manage to shut down bayern in the middle,we will slowly take control and kill them off with sheva, kaka and Gilardino. Im sure we wont rush forward,of course, and Bayern will be playing like they did against Juve, and that means strong. So...Seedorf,gattuso and Pirlo/Vogel need to be great.

PREVIEW
=======

Two of Europe's finest pure breeds face-off in this enthralling tie for only a place in the QF of this elite competition. :eekani: Milan had to play hard-ball in a group of death to be rewarded by a meeting with an FC Bayern side that sits at the top of the Bundesliga table with a comfortable 9 point lead and still competing in the DFB Cup. Bayern coach Felix Magath has serious intentions of at least winning the domestic double and then add another European Cup to his club's trophy cabinet if the opportunity presents itself. It is safe to say that Bayern are favourites for achieving the domestic double at the writing of this preview.

Their side is good enough to win the European Cup as well IMO but it is difficult to win the whole shabang unless the opponents mess it up bad or it is just your night.

Milan Chief Executive Adriano Galliani was correct in suggesting a knock-out draw that paired the number 1 seed with the number 16 seed similar to the format in tennis tournaments. He has a valid suggestion and it is something that UEFA should look at for the future. This round will see 3 good sides say goodbye to the competition because of the luck of the draw. What did Milan do wrong to draw Bayern while at the same time Villareal end up with Rangers? This stage will be far more exciting than the QF stage and the chances of reduced audiences looms as 3 high profile teams will go out.

My devilish side is happy that we got Bayern as a tough route to the final is usually a good omen according to my thinking pattern which is deluded but somewhat accurate.

Milan got the worst team out of Pot 2 but at the same time Bayern drew their nemesis team from Pot 1 in Milan. Bayern is yet to defeat Milan in a European knock-out tie with Milan marching on to European glory after eliminating Bayern on all three past occasions.

I don't think that Milan can get to the Stade de France, St. Denis - Paris in the month of May. It will be even tough to get to the QF but Milan must make it their business to be the fly in the ointment in this competition. The team has just been shaken really badly since the turn of the year but it is a self-created problem. It has been a primary aim for the season since last Summer to reach the European Cup Final. The likelihood of that happening is rare if you ask me but it is the team's obligation and debt to Paolo Maldini to really take a shot at glory before a new look Milan side surfaces next season. It is the principle that must be honoured.

Bayern has been on a rampage in the Bundesliga losing only once in an away game to Hamburg SV in a 2-0 defeat which took place in September [2005]! The only other defeat was to La Vecchia Signora in the Stadio Delle Alpi (I typed "Empty" by mistake in the flow! ) on Matchday 4 of the UCL. Bayern is undefeated in the last 15 games that includes both the Bundesliga and the DFB Cup and are undefeated as yet in their utterly gorgeous Allianz Arena that is just a treat for the eyes.  They have a comfortable 9 point lead in the league giving them a chance to focus on the UCL entirely for the time being. Galliani talks about a new stadium a lot. The Arena AufSchalke is miniscule compared to the "presence" that the Allianz Arena has. If he can manage to make a 90,000 version of the Allianz Arena then it can be considered. Another option is to kick out Inter and bring in modern changes to the San Siro with a retractable roof and other facilities while Milan plays their games in the Delle Alpi and shows Juve a thing or two about filling their stadium coming from a different city for the games. :eekani: Juve can move into the Olimpico in Rome for the time being.

============
---> M I L A N <---
============

It's been a surprising and unpredictable season for Milan. The start was not exactly right in the league with a shaky start to the UCL that brought Milan to a tricky point. The league form recovered and got smoother but Juve's superb form made it difficult to keep up the pace and Milan started to falter badly. The steadying has taken place but Juve is still ahead by a lot of points while the UCL resumes. The team is quite shaky in defence even now but at the same time capable of keeping clean sheets and then conceding through bad mistakes in the next few games. Realistically, Milan doesn't have a chance of winning anything this season as the team is inconsistent to maintain pace with Juve who will have to crumble dramatically to let go off the Scudetto. It is unlikely with Capello at the helm. The UCL is the only trophy that Milan is fighting for but there are other better teams who have a better defence and better probability as they were not in last year's final. I don't know how much hunger and application the side possesses as this will be the first game after the break in the UCL and a lot has happened in this break. Milan can't play scared of losing. That will be the final curtain call because the defence is not solid enough to carry the day and thinking of playing with a clean sheet in mind first and foremost is restricting the attacking players to do what they are doing best this season.

Probable Starting Line-Up(s)
=======================

------------------
---> Bayern <---
------------------

Formation: 4-4-2 diamond

---------------------------- Rensing ------------------------------

-- Sagnol ----------- Lucio --------- Ismael ------------- Lizarazu --

--------------------------- Demichelis -----------------------------

------- Deisler --------------------------------- Ze Roberto --------

----------------------------- Ballack -------------------------------

----------------- Pizarro ------------- Makaay ----------------------

------------------------------
--- Magath ---
------------------------------

1. The possible changes that Magath can play are Lahm at LB, Schweinsteiger in RM or LM and Karimi in RM. Salihamidzic is a utility player who can slot in at RB, LM or even one of the forward positions. Scholl can be a killer sub for any of the players and he needs to be watched on set-pieces.

2. The obvious man for Bayern is Ballack who makes the team click. He could depart in the Summer and any team purchasing him needs to know that he is not a very good DM but he is a very good attacking CM. Hitzfeld brought him to Bayern and tried to play him in DM but Ballack wasn't at his best. He is a goalscorer so he needs to be playing in the opponent's half. Makaay has been slowish this season but that doesn't take away his threat. Bayern will be hoping for a big game from Makaay.

3. Bayern's crowds have been excellent this season giving comfort to the management that they made a brilliant choice of moving to their new stadium. That will be a factor in this game as the last time Milan visited Bayern, they were still playing in that spider-web inspired Olimpiastadion. It will be quite a different atmosphere this time. The German crowds have started using choreography with hardcore fans forming groups to back their teams. That culture is building up and it makes it tougher for opponents to play in stadia like that.

4. Magath will surely put Demichelis on Kaka so it is upto Milan to utilize Pirlo, Seedorf and Shevchenko who are quite potent and threatening to make inroads towards the Bayern net with the No. 2 Rensing in goal as Kahn got injured over the weekend. He could return but he will not be 100% if that is the case.

---------------
---> Milan <---
---------------

Formation: 4-4-2 flat.

---------------------------- Dida ----------------------------------

-- Stam ------------ Nesta ------ Kaladze -------------- Serginho --

--- Kaka ---------- Gattuso ------ Pirlo ----------------- Seedorf ---

------------------- Gilardino ----- Shevchenko ----------------------

---------------------------
--- Ancelotti [M I L A N] ---
---------------------------

1. I don't know if he is scared or if he is willing to take the game to Bayern. Knowing that this is his last season in any case despite the press releases saying otherwise should at least give Ancelotti the confidence to make his team play the best they can. They have to attack and put pressure on Bayern. They are undefeated in their own stadium for good reason and the pressure needs to be piled up on them as if this was the second leg and a must win game for Milan.

2. A lot does depend on Kaka and starting him from the RM position to be a free flowing midfielder is the way to go. That will also put Ze Roberto under some pressure to mark Kaka and try to block him from that side. It will also enable Gattuso to be in the centre of the pitch and keep a good eye on Ballack who is in fine form.

3. All Milan players need to be sharp on shooting from distance as well as clinically efficient. Ancelotti needs to give them drills to improve their shooting as in games like these, you need players to take all the chances of scoring they can get.

4. A special eye needs to be on Ballack, Makaay and Deisler. Deisler is the top scorer for Bayern in the UCL with 3 goals. The Bayern side is strong in the air and we are weak in that area. That is a worrying point. I don't know how we can fix that problem that is present in our side for the last 3 seasons.

KEY BATTLES
==========

1. Ballack vs. Gattuso

2. Demichelis vs. Kaka

3. Makaay vs. Nesta

4. Lucio vs. Shevchenko

5. Rensing vs. Dida

KEY MEN
=======

Ballack

If Ballack is moving then this is his last European competition in Bayern's colours. In any case he is a professional and a match-winner who is dangerous in open play and set pieces. Milan has played him before and kept him under check as well. That is not to be confused with his current position where he is more lethal. He has a big role to play in this tie.

Kaka

His last trip to Deutschland wasn't that much fun as Poulsen was not in a mood to play football. Demichelis won't play like that but he will still make it hard for Kaka to move around. The experience of Schalke will come in handy this time around and hopefully Kaka will use that experience and his current good form to provide the big show. Remember this --- Kaka is directly proportional to Paris. :strong:

[B]PREDICTION

This is a tough one to predict. European thoroughbreds against each other is always a treat. Bayern is undefeated for 15 straight games and that makes it a great opportunity for Milan to capitalize on that streak and break it. I think Utd. was undefeated for 17 matches when we played them last season. So that gives Milan the edge in that respect. But .... Bayern is undefeated in the Allianz Arena for the whole season and that is with good reason. On top of that Milan has a healthy record in Deutschland which can come to an end. Now this part is in favour of FC Hollywood as the local Bavarians refer to their team.

Both sides don't have an ideal defence per se but the attack is doing the job for them. Bayern has a workaholic and efficient midfield German style while Milan has an enterprising midfield in the Milan style.

Milan defeated Utd. in similar sort of circumstances last season but this is Bayern: A European powerhouse. It's always different with these sorts. I don't think Milan can pull off a win and do a back to back on Bayern on their own turf! :eekani: It hasn't happened to them and they won't let it happen IMO. I don't think that Bayern is ready as yet to lose their first game in the Allianz Arena this season. They're loving every moment of it and they won't let go of that feeling so easily. Their last home game was a 4-0 mauling of Rapid Wein and it won't be easy to beat Bayern after that game in this competition.

Milan won their last away game with absolute authority. It won't be easy to defeat Milan who are coming from a 0-4 thumping of Fener which was eventually the last away game Milan played in the UCL. That game will carry us for some time. Apart from that Milan is cornered with the only reprieve being the UCL this season. It is also the primary aim of the club and therefore they will not submit so easily. It will be mighty tough to defeat this Milan when all this team has is the UCL to cling on to. This team is made for these nights.

It is quite a dilemma when neither side is ready to submit. The real fireworks and nervous moments will take place in the second leg with either side capable of winning it in the San Siro.

--->>> I feel that we will see a scoring draw in the Allianz Arena doing what Juve couldn't do.

Hello to everybody!

Why Ancelotti doesn't use Simic instead of Stam at RB???
Stam is clearly a CB. This tactic makes Serginho to play as LB and Kaladze as CB :S :S :S

Is Maldini fit for Bayern??

Thank you.

I'd like:
Simic----Nesta--Stam----Jankulovski

zlatanov
19-02-2006, 20:58
Chances are we'll see Stam-Nesta as the CD pair vs bayern but shouldn't be a surprise if it's nesta-Kakha as kaladze has played very, very often in CB over the past 10 games or so and has performed excellent IMO. So, shouldn't be a surprise to see Carlo stick to the defence he seems to be favoring lately and go with a Nesta-Kakha pair.
I personally expect to see a solid defence with no attack-minded backs - something like Simic-Nesta-Stam-Kakha as Bayern is very dangerous on the wings and this is where most of their attacks come from.
Should Carlo chose to use an attacking LB, however, I just don't see Janku starting ahead of Sergio as Janku has rarely played in that position this season. Actually he has rarely played at all, so unless we end up having Seedorf, Rui, Sergio all injured, I wouldn't count on seeing Janku start a game as important as this one. Plus, if I am not mistaken, he was injured for the last 2-3 games and only now returns to the squad.

Who is Marzoratti?

Milan_Paolo
20-02-2006, 06:36
Simic-Nesta-Stam-Kakha. Yes it's ok.But not Kakha as a CB.
But Jankulovski is a great player and we must use him sometime....
Serginho is not an LB though....so it's better what you suggested.

Warro Bantan
20-02-2006, 12:39
Who is Marzoratti? A youth player on the periphery of the first team, that has probably been included either as cover for Stam (who may not play) or for experience, or both.

I was heartened to read that we played with the Christmas Tree formation vs Cagliari on Sat. This is EXCELLENT news for me, as I think Carlo may opt to start with this formation vs the Germans. (Or at least go to it after we score 3 or so goals).

I find Milan to be much more effective using this formation, especially when playing away to strong teams such as Bayern.

I can hardly wait for the game tomorrow!

ESPN Deportes will be carrying the game, for triniman, and others in the Caribbean and those lucky enough to get the signal in the US.

Lets come back from Munich with a win lads!!

Carlo took out Gilardino before the end,and that means he was saving him for Munchen. Knowing Sheva will play, that makes me think we WILL USE 2 forwards, just as Silvio ordered.... I agree 4-5-1 would be better solution, with kaka and rui supporting sheva. It would give us more flexibility in defending and attacking. Im looking forward seeing Pirlo on tuesday, lets hope he decided to play one decent defensive game at last.

Milan_Mad

Our good friend Fabio Capello had this to say in an article from theguardian:

http://football.guardian.co.uk/continentalfootball/story/0,,1713479,00.html

The Juventus coach Fabio Capello says Bayern Munich are favourites to win the Champions League because of the winter break in the Bundesliga. "Bayern Munich are, in my mind, the favourites," said Capello. "It's quite possible that we'll meet Bayern in the final. I'd even say that Bayern are our greatest challenge."
Capello's team play at Werder Bremen on Wednesday in the knockout round. Bayern Munich host Milan tomorrow.

"At the moment, German teams have an advantage," he said, noting the Bundesliga had a month-long winter break until late January. "We've just had an intensive phase with a lot of matches behind us. That's the same for Barcelona or Chelsea. All these teams are in a bit of a slump right now. But the German teams were able to rest during their Christmas break. That's an advantage for them."

Helpfull little buggar isnt he? I mean really, has he just discounted the fact that we are to play them? I hope Carlo tells the team what Don Fabio is reported to have said, as this will certainly spur them on.

I had actually forgotten about the German winter break...and this indeed is cause for concern..but I refuse to be demoralised by the words of a coach who has been on the receiving end of so much ref assistance this term.

Plus, they may just be a little "rusty" after only having practice matches and friendly encounters while we have steadfastly improved in matches that count.

Freshness is a boon, however, I prefer a well oiled machine to one that has been sitting idle for a month...:D

FORZA MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILAN!!!!

and for the line up i think our back 4 is still a big question whether kaladze plays at CB or Stam at CB. But whoever plays i hope they do good they really need to be sharp against bayern specially on set-pieces.Also If pirlo plays he should take advantage of the free kicks he's been great this season i dont know how come lately he doesnt take them, but tomorrow for sure he will take the free kicks because bayern uses the same ball as Ac milan does ;)

Forza Milan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go all the way to Paris

nefremo
20-02-2006, 23:59
He doesn't take them lately because he hasn't been playing.

I put a bet on Milan tonight. I know that the first rule in betting is not to bet on your favorite team..........but I really think we will win tommorow. Talking about how Bayern has not lost in their new stadium does not concern us. They have not lost there, but have never played us there. Juve lost to them but then again, they did not have their best help in Germany (refs). The defence is tighter and tighter as the games progress. I predict a tight victory for us. 1-0 Milan. We will shut them out on their own grownd.

Dida, Simic, Stam, Nesta, Kaladze/Serginho, Pirlo, Gattuso, Seedorf, Kaka, Rui, Shevchenko. I want this formation. X-mass tree with Sheva the lonely striker. If we can get a goal in the first........Bayern will have a tough time scoring because the 5 mids will keep good possetion of the ball. All we need to do against this strong team is keep the ball as much as we can and the x-mass tree formation is the best for that.

FORZA MILAN!!!!

Not a great game for Milan. We did have portions of good possesion but we weren't able to get good chances. It was a deserved penalty, and we did deserve the goal. Shevchenko (7 CL goals! :delol:) played well he had another really good chance to score so did Gila, if they scored it would have been a great game. Good Result!

Gattuso :v46: really should have been smarter. Hopefully Ambro is healthy for Milano. We should be able to win at home, we shouldn't conceed at home.

An outstanding result earned from a not so good display. We played a solid game, that's beyond doubt's, but the team is not showing creativity on midfield, and that's worries me a lot, 'cause to me creativity on midfield is essential for a victorious side.

Good Milan result, we should be satisfied. Bayern were better in the first half, and deserved the goal - but thanks for a great second half we got "1 point". People can not say we were poor tonight, remember Bayern is not a walkover at the Allianz Arena. In the second half our keeper did not have one single save. Remember we created 2 very good chances in the second half, and on a better day we should have won.
A bit worrying is though, that both Gattuso and probaly Dida will miss the return leg. Let's hope our captain Maldini will be back then. Here is how our rate our players:
Dida - good match, secure... Not a chance by Ballacks goal.
Stam - good match. Good in offence, reliable in the defence.
Nesta - No words. He is class. Totally outmarked Makaay.
Kaladze - good performance. He is really performing better and better in central defence.
Serginho - tried with some offensive runs, however his crossing were poor tonight. Solid at the back though.
Gattuso - worked hard, however his behaviour were bad.. Used a lot of energy with talking with the Bayern players.
Pirlo - okay match. Found it difficult against an agressive Bayern midfield, but in improved in the second half.
Seedorf - his worst performance this year. Almost every pass did not find the target...
Kaka - found it hard against Demicehlis, but still takes the attention of 2-3 players all the time.
Gilardino - worked hard, but should have scored really.
Sheva - Good second half, always dangerous...

Good result which makes the return leg at the San Siro interesting. We have a good chance to progess, but let's see what will happen.

Not a great game from us, we were pretty lucky to get a draw as Bayern was clearly the better team. They defended really well today and more or less neutralized our attack, we can thank heavens for that handball by Ismael.

But 1-1 is a good result from BayArena. Lets' just hope that Dida will not be out for long...

21-02-2006, 17:21
I'm so dissapointed. Milan didn't show any spirit or will to win the game. Other than Gilardino, Sheva and Kaká in the 2nd half that is. Nesta and Kaladze were great tonight!

But Seedorf, Pirlo and most of all Gattuso were really bad tonight I think. Because of them the team didn't got their fast, fluid passing-game going. I thought that Vogel and Jankulovski should have entered the pitch way sooner than they did.

I'm really glad that Gattuso isn't playing in the next game 'cause he sucked tonight. Like Hitman said, he spent the most of the game arguing with the Bayern players and diving. And then he had the guts to be disrespectful to the coach? I really hope that they sell him this summer.

Forza Milan!! And hope that Dida gets ok soon.

It was a so-so performance from the guys, the 2. half was promising for the second leg.
I start to worry about Pirlo's form.....after the rest he had and special training program I couldn't see much improvement in his form and it's not a good sign for us.

Dida 7/10
Serginho 5/10

Kaladze 7/10

Pirlo 4/10
Gattuso 5/10
Seedorf 5/10

first half we played really bad we were defending all the time, Bayern were playing pressing the first half and we couldn't do anything not a single chance.
but they couldn't do that the whole match so we took the control in second half and created some chances, we could scored a second goal (Gila's sitter) but f*** it i'm verry satisfied with the result it's a great result for a us.
i'm worried about Dida too i hope it's not a serious injury, and now we'll see the real capabilities of Kalac i hope he do good

Magath incredulous as Milan take upper hand

MUNICH, Feb 21 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich coach Felix Magath was aghast at the penalty decision that gave AC Milan the equaliser in Tuesday's 1-1 draw in the Champions League.
Belgian referee Frank De Bleeckere adjudged Valerien Ismael to have deliberately handled the ball in his attempt to clear a cross-shot from Serginho in the round of 16 match.

Andriy Shevchenko stroked the spot-kick past Michael Rensing, standing in for the injured Oliver Kahn, and Bayern, who had been leading thanks to a fantastic Michael Ballack goal, had to settle for a draw at the Allianz Arena.

'I've never seen anything like that in the Champions League,' Magath told Premiere TV after the opening leg of the first knockout round tie.

'I can't understand how a match can be decided by a penalty like that. It threw us out of our rhythm and we were too passive in the second half. The penalty hurt the players' psyche.'

Magath could at least take heart for the second leg on March 8 at the San Siro, after seeing the way his Bayern team overran Milan in the first half. 'We've shown that we can control them,' Magath said. 'It's up to the players to get a better result in Milan.'

Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said he understood Magath's frustration.

'Of course, I understand it,' the Italian told reporters. 'There was definitely a hand, but whether it was deliberate or not I don't know. He did have time to remove his hand.'

Now,about the game...... what to say about Seedorf and Pirlo.... this is just horrible!!! I mean...Pirlo is a DM for god's sake! He cant walk on the pitch that way, with a new coach, I think we will not look at Pirlo playing mayor part in Milan's game.ANd I agree!!! I know im saying that for 1000th time now,but its the main problem in our team. Defence looks quite good, kaladze is doing ok now,but CM....now good enough. Do you realize we got one of the hardest teams out there?
DO you realize Bayern is not a push over team that will concede goal after goal in a game like this and allow teams to run over them?
Do you realize they were playing at home and in a 'home' they have won every match?
Do you realize we played
a) minus some vital starters.
b) with players coming off injuries.
Most importantly, do you realize what a pillar players like Pirlo and Seedorf are to this TEAM? One game does not make US forget this fact...in any event they did not play as awful as you claim.

You have to realize that every team is not Treviso...there is a reason this tournament is made up of elite squads...it takes blood sweat and tears to win game after game...

Well, couldn't watch the game 'cause had to upgrade my PC and the new things I put in there made PPLIve lock up :(. Anyway, from what I read we had a solid game and traded one half each with Bayern. After all, 1-1 vs one of the best teams in Europe on their ground is not something we should cry over.
From what I read, the midfield sucked big time today. I wouldn't blame Seedorf though, for he has been probably our best player this season and this seems to be his first bad game for quite some time now. I am worried, however, by Pirlo's lack of form as he hasn't been himself for quite some time now and even had some time to improve but from what I read he hasn't benefited much from that - let's hope that he just lost his rythm a little and in 2-3 games will be back in shape. I have to agree, however, that Vogel has to play more regularly as he has been pretty impressive in his last outings.
Wish we could get Ambro back for the game in Milano as Gattuso is out on suspension, while Vogel seems to be more useful in Pirlo's position rather than as a ball winner.
Anyway, a good result but the job is only half done - in Milano we will have to be extra careful as every goal Bayern scores would count for 2. It's for this same reason I have always hated home games in the CL.
Forza Milaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan !!!!!!

I totally agree with you, my friend. People tend to be worried mainly with our defense, which in fact is in need of some refreshment, but it is our midfield that are really working pretty bad! Gattuso function is exactly to be a madman hehehe, so in that respect I disagree with you, but on the other hand Pirlo and Seedorf were really puting uninspired displays in recent times: they are moving slow and lacking creativity, that's a fact.

Serginho is playing fine at Left back, and Jankulovski is the second choice on that position, but he has to prove yet why did Milan got him.

I did just read that Dida will probably miss the second Leg, which is a ****in' Loss, because Kalac isn't good at all. He's just tall, nothing more.

I think it was not a penallty, the ball hit Ismael's arm but his arm was on his body it was not deliberately.
But we deserved that result with our good play in the second half so i don't care

zlatanov
22-02-2006, 12:29
i agree that his arm was on his torso but the move was every bit deliberate IMO. He basically threw himself in direction of the ball, so you can't say it was not intentional. If I have doubts about the PK it is only because his arm was on his chest, otherwise he did hit the ball with his arm (and not the chest or shoulder) and he did intentionally threw himself onto the ball to stop the pass.
IMO, it was a situation where many refs wouldn't give a PK but many others would do exactly what the Belgian ref did. Ismael, as a professioanl player, should know these things and should he decide to go this path, he should expect to be possibly penalised for that and bare the consequances. Same goes for Magath and his crys of how they were robbed or how he "has never seen anything like that in a CL game". Well, my advise to him is try watch more CL games then.

I thought it was a definitaly penalty Ismael had time to get his hand out of the way thank god the ref pointed to the spot.

My view on the game:

In the first half, Bayern were aggressive, and used a lot of long balls, and kept us under pressure. The goal resulted from a miscommunication between defenders and midfield, where the midfield ran out, but the defense lagged back, allowing Ballack time on the ball...enough for it to even bounce, before he spanked an unsaveable shot passed Dida, who could not save that in 10 lifetimes.

As usual, a different Milan took the pitch in the second half, with more posession, and more attacking play from the wings. The midfield´s creative axis of Seedorf and Pirlo was hampered by the poor state of the pitch in the middle, but I agree that Seedorf tried to be a little too pretty instead of making earlier, easier passes.

The penalty was a fair penalty, and if Sheva can concede one when clearly trying to protect his face, then a foolish defender who has the choice not to, but leaves his hand across his chest, and as a result, handles the ball, shouldnt be defended by his coach. It was a penalty, a harsh one, but technically, a penalty.

Sheva did well to send the young German keeper the wrong way, and Gila really really should have put away the chance that fell to him shortly thereafter. I think we may see Superpippo in the return leg.

Gattuso I think, after stupidly getting a yellow card, and being a total turd for the majority of the match, should be on his way out of the San Siro in the summer. Hopefully he can go to the EPL, and to Man U in particular, where the barbaric type of football he enjoys is loved by all.

It is pointless to have a provacatuer who is so easily provoked, that he gets himself a yellow. He is of little or no use in the attacking third, and a team like Milan needs more the Redondo type of DM, than one in the Gattuso mold. Elegant when in posession, capable of dribbling, passing, and scoring, while able to tackle and intimidate with the best of them. Dimechelis did a fine job for Bayern, and I would love either he or Diarra to come to Milan in the summer. Poulsen? Havent seen enough of him to be honest, but if speculation is to be believed, then Poulsen could be Rino´s replacement, and Diarra (if we get both) Ambro´s replacement.

Back to the game: Serghino and Stam were creditable in terms of their performance, but I shudder to think of what would happen were we able to play Cafu.

Kaladze and Nesta were great, though had Nesta closed down Ballack more quickly, or had the midfield not run off...then we could have beaten them..but, it didnt work out that way...ah well...at least the Germans have been held for a tie..the first since they moved into their new stadium.

I look forward to the return leg, more relaxed, having seen the best of what Bayern had to offer in the first half. The second leg is set up perfectly for us. Bayern will be forced to attack, and leave space for our midfield and forwards to exploit.

Magath will be up to his usual tricks however, and for this, Carlo needs to properly prepare the team. I am happy Rino is out of the return leg, this gives Vogel the chance to cement his place in the side. The Swiss international passes well, but maybe isnt as strong a ball winner or as intimidating as Rino...but with enough support, he should do well.

A good result, one that I am not unhappy with.

Finally, for those who are unaware, or in denial, Pirlo is not a defensive midfielder. He is a deep lying playmaker....a relatively unique position, normally the role of a traditional #5, and represented to perfection by few players in the modern game, but notably, by players such as Redondo.

His role, believe it or not, is not to provide cover for the defenders, but to pick out the forwards or midfielders with incisive passing. Rino, as per the rhombus tactic used by Carlo, drops back into the DM role proper when Pirlo has the ball.

Despite what many here have posted, I thought he (Pirlo) did ok in the match today..not a sparkling performance, but not a poor one either..maybe a little below his stellar best...but thats the rub isnt it? At his best, no one can play like him.

Wat had u ppl said?? Pirlo and Seedorf dont deserve in Milan??? Who score the fine goal from free kick in CL match against Schalke 04?? who the midfielder that play so well this season that we are the only team that beat Juve in serial A? u cant judge a player future
from a single match.....Seedorf do perform well whole season. He too just recover form flu..give them a break.any way milan do get a draw!!

I've never said that about Pirl but Seedorf??? are you kidding. He was crap against Bayern. He had two good spells and this conincided with us playing our best, you want to know why I think that was. Because right now it's possible to totally stifle our midfield by man-marking kaka and denying Pirlo any space while you can just leave Gattuso to run around like a maniac and let Seedorf give the ball the away and take up frankly bizzare defensive positions (at one point he stood about 12 feet away from a bayern player, seemingly trying to block him from putting the ball out for a throw and he never even tried to go up the attacker when that high ball went into our box and he was the closest player to him)

The fact that we play so much better when seedorf plays well does not show what a class, team lifting player he is, it demonstrates how essential it is that we must get a player who will consistently play well in his position. Seedorf plays like he is a luxury.

as for the Dida thing (and this isn't going to be a complaint about his form) does the whole loaning juve abiati farce not seem even stupider now. what if that was Dida for 2 monthes, would Capello release Abiati from his loan contract (which, if I the rules, understand they would be allowed to do) so we could be covered? I very much doubt it with the Juve v Milan game on the horizon.

Question of the day:

How long (in seconds) does it take Milan to counter attack from MIlan's half way of its half (i.e., 1/2 away from the middfield line) to opponent's penalty kick spot area?

Still, instead of wasting brain cells on other teams' problems, try looking at that team-wanna-be that's in 3rd place in Serie A, as things seem to be falling apart pretty nastily over there, don't you think?
As for Ballack, he wants to play for a team that has a chance of actually winning something, which automatically takes Inter out of the picture. Better luck tomorrow.

well, don't believe all you hear. I couldn't watch the game live due to PC problems so all my sources came from websites with live reports and such. The majority of the opinions were that bayern "seemingly" had more possession of the ball but I guess that was because Milan's tactics was all about staying back and counterattacking trying to score at least 1 away goal, while letting in as few as possible. It was very much like the Milan-Inter games of last year in the CL - they tried to make the play, while we closed them down, suffocated them and took the most of all opportunities they provided us with.
Other sources were other MM members a number of whom gave way too negative of a review on how we performed, which is the norm for some people here. A day after the game, however, I was able to watch the whole game on a stream - I posted a link to it - and what I saw was quite different from the "awful" marks certain people gave Milan.
In the second half of the game, Milan went forward with larger numbers looking for an equaliser and bayern looked a bit lost, especially after Sheva scored that penalty. After that they tried to come up with something meaningful up front but Milan's rearguard didn't allow them to even breath, so it all ended in pointless crosses from left or right, and rare attacks through the center that ended in losing the ball before they, Bayern, could even reach our PA. I am trying to think of a real goal scoring chance they created in the entire 2nd half but right now I just can't, could be wrong though as the game was almost 2 weeks ago, but still I really can't think of any goalscoring chances they created. Milan, on the other hand had a number of dangerous counterattacks (Gila and Sheva both missed great chances they should have scored) and scored a goal. So, all in all, Milan took the 2nd
half with football that was based on purely closing down the opponent and counterattacking them.
The first half bayern were the more settled team as Milan looked a bit toothless up front and confused after we conceded that goal. Until that ballack goal, Milan were the more composed team on the field as Bayern tried to attack but they looked as if the not all the players were on the same page and looked out of synch. In those minutes, Milan's only problem was that we couldn't create goal chances but in defence and midfield we looked pretty good as we stopped all bayern's lame attempts to attack us. And that's when the goal came - The midfield didn't close down Ballack and allowed him just too much time and space to operate on the ball and bayern scored with a 25-30m shot a bit out of the blue, I have to say, as they had hardly endangered us prior to that moment. For 5-10 m after that goal, Milan players looked out of sorts and allowed bayern to create one other opportunity, which could have resulted in a second goal but Makkay's shot was well saved by Dida. Apart from that, Bayern had 2-3 dangerous shots from long range - 30m or so - and that was it, no other real chances in the first half for them, and this is the half which a lot of people claim went to Bayern.
All in all they had 2-3 long range shots (they all went straight in Dida's hands, so not sure if I could count those as goal scoring chances), one goal by Ballack with a long range shot, and one pretty good chance through Makkay, which he wasted, and that was it. As for the second half, they couldn't even get a sniff at goal and couldn't build one attack worth remembering, so I honestly don't know what those people saw to make them say that we deserved to lose. IMO, it was a game we could have lost - if Makkay had scored that chance, the result would have become 2-0 for Bayern - but could have also easily won as we not only equalised in the scond half but had a couple of other great chances and, on a better day, could have won by 2-1 and even more.
If you ask me whether Milan gave their best, my answer is "not even close" but to say that we were in any way inferior and deserved to lose, that just a load of BS. And let's not forget that we played a team that's among the favourites to win the CL, a team that beat Juve and made them look plain, a team that by that game, hadn't lost a single point on their home turf in any game be that a Bundesliga or CL one (this last one is no longer true as we drew them and yesterday Hamburg beat them 2-1 at the Allianz Arena).

If you're not a Bayern or Milan fan, then you'd have forgotten this game right after it finished. It was all tactics and not even a "B" from beauty.
The way Milan played it, was typical "Italian big clubs playing an important match away from Italy" match !
Some can say that Milan played awful, but if you take into concideration that this was an away match in 1/8 finals of CL, that it was played in Munich, and that it was Ancelotti who probably said to the players to play the way they played, then we can say that Milan players played perfectly ! They didn't play for the crowd, but they played just the way Ancelotti told them to...maybe the only possibile way to get a good result !

Zlatanov was absolutely right about how the match went. Ballack scored, Makaay had a good chance, and it was everything the Munich club did.
Milan had solid chances missed by Sheva and Gila and scored a penalty goal.

All in all, the only fair and realistic result of this match was 1:1 !!!

No Milan did not deserve to lose at all. Bayern got lucky. They were not lucky in the sense that we missed our chances. That happens to every team. They were fortunate that Dida got injured just when we were moving into first gear. This really stalled the tempo of the game and we lost it from there. From then on it looked like the match had no aim. We would probably have gone on to rape them had that injury not occcured and taken days to get over with.

Ballack has a more realistic ambition than " a real challenge " , He wants A Cup Next season , It is the European Champions Cup that he wants.
So Inter definitely not a perfect choice for him.
And as your opinion about Galliani, well, I can only say, We can't have all the world Class Players in our hand even if it comes for free, why? Because the team need to keep balance ( we don't want to end up like Real Madrid won't we? ) and a player like Ballack will get one of our regular player out from San Siro. It's like Ronaldo come to offer his service for free, what should we do? sign him and kick one of Gilardino or Inzaghi?
The match between Milan-Muenchen tonight proved that Ballack is not a great difference. But if you watch Ronaldinho, HE IS a GREAT Difference!!
So Galliani's decision to keep silence ( he never say refuse!! ) about the probability to sign Ballack is in order to think deeper about our next squad composition next season and let the team foccus on Serie A and CL.
Galliani is A wise person, interest about Ballack can be revealed after the CL is over, not now.

Comment: what a great cross from Stamm to Sheva!
It was not a regular cross, a semi-volley off-the-bounce pass.
Really really skilfful play.

a massive offside upon a cross from the right flank? My video link sucks rocks. That is why I am asking.
